For a compatible third-party HDR10 monitor, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the external display, and turn on High Dynamic Range. That is the macOS setting for HDR video playback; it is separate from display presets used for specialized production work.
Turn on HDR for the external display
-
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
-
Select the external monitor in the display list.
-
Turn on High Dynamic Range, if the control appears.
To stop using HDR on that monitor, return to the same display settings and turn the switch off. Apple says the control is available for third-party displays that support HDR10; it may not appear on every Mac or display. Apple’s HDR video settings guide and its compatibility guidance describe the relevant conditions.
Check the whole connection when HDR is missing
HDR depends on a chain of compatible components and settings: the Mac model and macOS version, the monitor’s HDR10 support, the selected monitor input, and the cable or adapter carrying the signal. A missing switch does not by itself identify which part is preventing HDR.

Confirm the monitor supports HDR10. Check its specifications and manual. On some televisions, HDR works only on specific HDMI inputs; connect the Mac to an HDR-capable input and select it on the TV. Apple’s external-display guidance notes that input support can matter.
-
Check the Mac’s ports and connection. If the Mac has no HDMI port, Apple describes connecting from Thunderbolt using an HDMI cable and a USB-C adapter. The adapter and cable must support the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use; the connection type alone does not guarantee HDR. Apple lists the available connection options and gives the Belkin Connect USB-C to HDMI Adapter as an example, not as a guarantee for every signal combination.

Review resolution and refresh rate. On some configurations, choosing a scaled resolution above the display’s native resolution can affect whether HDR or particular refresh rates are available. Apple flags this caveat in its 2026 MacBook Air display guidance. Try a native or lower scaled resolution if HDR disappears after changing resolution.

Check the monitor’s built-in menu. Some non-Apple display options are available only through the monitor’s on-screen controls. The exact setting name and input requirements vary by model, so consult that monitor’s manual. Apple’s connection guidance explains that some controls reside on the display itself.

Separate HDR playback from reference modes
The High Dynamic Range switch controls HDR video playback on a supported external display. A Preset or reference mode is a different control: it configures display characteristics for a particular media workflow, rather than serving as the general HDR on/off switch.
Apple describes HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) as a reference mode for controlled 4K or ultra-high-definition video production. Its guide specifies up to 1,000 nits full-screen sustained for that workflow; that figure is not a brightness rating for all external HDR monitors. Apple’s reference-mode documentation describes the preset and its intended use.

If HDR video looks like SDR on battery
Check whether Optimise video streaming while on battery is enabled. Apple says a Mac may play HDR video in SDR while running on battery when that optimization is on. Connect the Mac to power or turn off the optimization to play HDR, following the instructions in Apple’s HDR video guide.
Apple also documents resolution limits for some Intel Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air configurations. The outcome depends on the HDR content and display, so this should not be treated as a limitation affecting every Intel Mac.

Choose a connection based on the setup, not the connector alone
There is no universally best route between a direct cable and an adapter. Check all four parts of the intended setup before changing hardware:
-
Mac model and available port.
-
HDR10 support and HDR-capable input on the monitor.
-
Cable or adapter support for the intended HDR signal.

Target resolution and refresh rate.
If you are buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for a Mac without HDMI, verify the exact Mac, display input, HDR capability, resolution, and refresh rate combination against the adapter’s specifications and the monitor manual. Apple’s example adapter does not establish support for every combination.
