For browser-based schoolwork, a Chromebook is a sensible starting point; the Acer Chromebook Spin 312 is TechRadar’s current overall pick for kids. It is not a universal choice: first check the school’s app and account requirements, then choose Windows or macOS if required software or family needs rule ChromeOS out. The recommendations below are review-based, not the result of hands-on testing for this guide.
Start with the school’s requirements
Before comparing models, ask the school which operating system, apps, browser, and account type the child must use. Google says school administrators control access for school accounts and school-issued Chromebooks, so a device that works well at home may still be restricted or unsuitable for classroom use. TechRadar also notes that ChromeOS cannot run all Windows software. Google’s Chromebook account guidance and TechRadar’s kids’ laptop guide explain these limits.
- Mostly browser-based learning: A Chromebook is a reasonable default if the school’s tools work in a browser or have compatible ChromeOS apps.
- Windows-only software: Choose a Windows laptop if a required program will not run on ChromeOS.
- Mac-specific needs: Consider macOS if the family or school relies on software or services that require it.
- Touchscreen or tablet-style use: Look at a convertible model, but confirm the child will benefit from touch and that the keyboard remains suitable for schoolwork.
Also decide who will manage the child’s account, how long you expect to keep the laptop, and what total budget is acceptable. No country, budget, age, or school specification is established here, so none of these models is a universal best buy.
Four candidates for different learning needs
TechRadar’s guide lists the following models for distinct use cases. These are editorial recommendations, not guarantees that every configuration is available, current, or right for a particular school.
#1 Best Overall
- 2-in-1 laptop toy for preschoolers features a screen that flips to convert from keyboard to tablet mode
- Learning laptop features a keyboard with letters A-Z and numbers 1-10, or swivel and transform it into a touch tablet
- Kids can pretend to be like mom and dad with role-play activities like e-mailing Scout; parents can customize to help their child spell their own name
- Five learning modes include ABCs, numbers, games, music and messages
- Intended for ages 2-5 years; requires 3 AA batteries; batteries included for demo purposes only; new batteries recommended for regular use
| Use case | Candidate | Why consider it | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| General first laptop and web learning | Acer Chromebook Spin 312 | TechRadar’s overall kids’ laptop pick; its convertible design may suit younger users who benefit from touch. | Exact configuration, compatibility with school tools, and remaining automatic update support. |
| School-focused Chromebook alternative | Dell Chromebook 3120 | Listed by TechRadar as its best student laptop for kids. | School app requirements, configuration, screen and keyboard preferences, and update support. |
| Windows-required software | Acer Aspire Go 15 | A Windows option in TechRadar’s guide. | That the required software runs on the specific configuration, plus the family’s approach to child-account controls. |
| Apple ecosystem or macOS software | Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) | A macOS alternative in TechRadar’s guide. | School compatibility, cost, and how the family will manage the child’s account and device. |

Choose a configuration that fits the workload
Memory and storage
Tom’s Guide’s guidance is that 4 GB of memory can be enough for light Chromebook use, such as a few learning sites, while at least 8 GB is preferable for more tabs and apps. Treat this as editorial advice, not a hard technical requirement: actual needs depend on the child’s workload and the school’s software. Tom’s Guide’s Chromebook recommendations provide the basis for that rule of thumb. No specific storage capacity is established for the models above, so check the configuration against the files and apps the child will use.
Rank #2
- Designed to look and feel like a grown-up computer, this first laptop for kids helps build basic computer skills using a full-size QWERTY keyboard and cursor controller
- Explore over 80 activities, including apps like a weekly calendar, notebook, and music player or games that explore subjects including math, science, language arts, music and Spanish
- Fully bilingual, every activity can be played in English or Spanish so kids can be immersed in a new language
- No internet connection is needed; every activity comes pre-loaded and is ready to play offline
- Intended for ages 5+ years; requires 4 AA batteries; batteries included for demo purposes only; new batteries recommended for regular use
Screen, keyboard, and portability
Consider whether the child will work mostly at a desk or carry the laptop between home and school. Compare screen size, keyboard comfort, weight, and whether a touchscreen or convertible hinge is genuinely useful. The available recommendations do not establish a single best size or weight for every child.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck update support, especially on used Chromebooks
Google says that Chromebooks released from 2021 onward receive ten years of automatic security and feature updates under its policy introduced in 2024. That portfolio-level statement is not a substitute for checking the exact device: look up its model in Google’s Chromebook information and update policy, particularly if buying used. The relevant model’s remaining support period matters more than its age as described by a seller.

Set up supervision with the right account
Personal Chromebook
For a compatible personal Chromebook, Google says Family Link can help parents approve apps, manage websites and device settings, and set screen-time limits. Family Link support applies to Chromebooks running ChromeOS 71 or higher. See Google’s guide to learning and exploring on a personal Chromebook and its Chromebook account-management instructions.
Sign-ins and school-managed devices
Configure who can sign in. Google warns that guest mode or additional users can let a child use the device without the Family Link settings applying. School accounts and school-issued devices may instead be governed by the school’s Google Workspace for Education administrator, so ask the school which controls it manages.
Rank #4
- LEARNING ACTIVITIES - 48 Learning Modes; Alphabet, Mathematics, Colors, Animals, General knowledge, Logic, Music, Clock Reading, Calendar.
- TFT COLOR SCREEN - 4.3 inch Color Screen Which will make kids watching the screen much more clear, also offers lifelike visuals, combining convenience with comfort. There is a protective film on the screen that needs to be teared off.
- PERFECT DESIGN: Ergonomics inspired by real laptops, with realistic mouse and keyboard. Slim elegant design. Convenient size for easy handgrip. L x W x H: 11''x 8''x 1.2''
- FUNNY GAMES - Fun games to test logic, memory and speed after learning.
- HOURS OF FUN! - Laptop keyboard to answer the questions and play the games.
Limits outside ChromeOS
Family Link does not provide identical supervision on every platform. Google’s FAQ says some features—including app management, Chrome filtering, and screen-time limits—do not apply to a child’s activity on iOS or the web. Read Google’s Family Link FAQ before assuming that controls set up for one device carry over to another.

Google for Education says Chromebooks include Reading Mode, Select-to-speak, and a built-in screen magnifier. These tools may help with reading access or visual comfort, but their presence does not establish that a particular device meets an individual learner’s needs. Check the school’s recommended supports and, where relevant, try the features with the child before settling on a platform. Google for Education describes Chromebook features here.

A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the school’s required apps, operating system, and account rules.
- Choose a platform that runs those tools without workarounds the child cannot manage.
- Pick memory and storage for the expected workload rather than buying by model name alone.
- Check keyboard, screen, weight, and touch needs in the exact configuration.
- For a Chromebook, verify the model’s update-support status and remaining support period.
- Plan the parent account, sign-in restrictions, and supervision settings before handing over the device.
- For a used laptop, verify its condition and update support rather than relying only on its advertised age.
