The settings that matter most are the ones that make each storage path usable, independent, and consistent from host to array: NIC and switch topology, VLAN and subnet design, routing, MTU, and the hypervisor’s multipathing configuration. There is no universal NIC count or MTU. For VMware ESXi, software iSCSI port binding is topology-dependent and is not a substitute for independent uplinks. For Hyper-V, dedicated or converged networking can work when redundancy, isolation, and QoS are designed for the cluster and its storage protocol.

Start with the complete host-to-array path

An iSCSI connection crosses more than a host adapter and a target port. Its usable path depends on the initiator, physical NIC, switch ports and links, VLAN, IP subnet and route, storage controller, target portal, and the host’s path-selection policy. A configuration that looks redundant in the host may still share a switch or other failure point, or may not match the target’s portal layout.

Before choosing settings, identify the hypervisor and version, the initiator type, array and controller portals, supported NICs and switch configuration, and the vendors’ current compatibility guidance. Then draw every intended host-to-target path. Confirm which components each path uses and which failures it is meant to tolerate. Multiple interfaces by themselves do not prove that multipathing is correct.

Choose isolation and sharing deliberately

Microsoft’s Network recommendations for a Hyper-V cluster calls for planning network redundancy, quality of service, and isolation of traffic types. It also documents converged Ethernet networking, where traffic shares infrastructure but is separated and controlled with VLANs and QoS. Microsoft describes iSCSI as storage traffic and allows multiple physical or logical networks to support reliable storage connectivity.

As Microsoft Learn puts it: “To provide the most consistent performance and functionality and to improve network security, isolate the different types of network traffic.” Isolation may mean separate physical infrastructure, or logical separation and traffic controls on shared infrastructure; which is appropriate depends on failure domains, security, workload bandwidth, and the supported design for the array and hypervisor.

Design choice What it can provide What to verify
Dedicated physical iSCSI network Physical separation from other traffic when the adapters, links, and switching are genuinely independent. That paths do not still share a critical failure point, that capacity suits the storage workload, and that the design is supported by the installed products.
Converged Ethernet with logical separation Shared physical infrastructure with traffic separation and control through VLANs and QoS. Correct VLAN assignment, adequate bandwidth under contention, QoS configuration, redundancy, and the cluster-management procedure in use.

These are design options, not a universal ranking. For example, Hitachi’s VMware 10/25 GbE reference architecture recommends a dedicated, non-oversubscribed iSCSI LAN. That is guidance for its reference architecture, not a general requirement for every hypervisor or array.

Configure ESXi software iSCSI binding only when the topology qualifies

VMware ESXi software iSCSI port binding has specific topology requirements. Broadcom’s guidance says binding is appropriate when multiple iSCSI VMkernel ports connect to an array that broadcasts a single target IP and the initiator ports share the same subnet, broadcast domain, and vSwitch. In the bound configuration, each VMkernel port must map one-to-one to a physical NIC port. Broadcom says to use separate vSwitches for separate iSCSI VLANs.

Do not bind ports when the initiator and target ports are in different subnets or broadcast domains. An incorrect binding topology can cause slow rescans, incorrect or missing paths, loss of visible storage, path-redundancy alerts, and longer host reboot times, according to Broadcom.

What a compatible multi-NIC binding setup looks like

Broadcom’s ESXi 8.x multi-NIC example assigns each iSCSI VMkernel port its own physical uplink: the corresponding uplink is active for that port group and the other uplink is unused. The VMkernel port groups are then bound to the software iSCSI adapter. Broadcom warns that active-active or active-standby uplink policies can disallow port binding in this setup, so verify the applicable configuration rather than assuming a teaming policy is compatible.

Do not use LACP or another link-aggregation configuration as a replacement for ESXi software iSCSI multipathing. Broadcom explains that software multipathing expects one uplink per VMkernel port. Follow the supported host and array path policies for the actual deployment.

Keep VLAN, subnet, routing, and MTU consistent end to end

Microsoft’s Windows Server iSCSI troubleshooting guidance asks administrators to check whether storage, management, and client networks are segregated and correctly routed, and whether VLAN, MTU, and Jumbo Frame settings are consistent. It identifies mismatches in these settings as common causes of iSCSI connectivity problems. Check the entire path, not just the host NIC: the selected network settings must work across the adapter, switches, and storage interfaces.

Jumbo frames are optional, not an automatic iSCSI requirement. Hitachi’s VMware 10/25 GbE reference architecture presents increasing payload MTU from 1,500 to 9,000 as a possible throughput measure for that architecture. It does not establish that MTU 9,000 is necessary or faster in every deployment. Enable a larger MTU only if every component on the path supports it, the vendor-supported configuration permits it, and connectivity has been validated at that setting.

For the multi-NIC binding context, Broadcom notes that ESXi adds a routing-table entry for each VMkernel and does not recommend overriding a VMkernel default gateway unless Layer 3 connectivity is required. Avoid adding routes or changing gateways without a specific network requirement and a design that accounts for the resulting path.

Apply Hyper-V guidance to the Windows Server version and protocol

For Hyper-V clusters, Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes network redundancy, isolation or controlled convergence, and QoS that meets workload service requirements. Its recommendations include generic minimum-bandwidth weights—for example, a weight of 40 for storage in its example. That is an example value, not a universal performance prescription; size and validate QoS against the cluster’s traffic and capacity needs. If System Center Virtual Machine Manager manages the cluster, Microsoft says to use VMM to configure the documented settings.

Microsoft’s Windows Server troubleshooting guidance says LBFO NIC teaming is deprecated for Windows Server Hyper-V deployments as of Windows Server 2022 and directs readers to Switch Embedded Teaming (SET). Check the documentation for the precise Windows Server release and supported design in use. Microsoft also notes that NIC teaming may be incompatible with RDMA for SMB Direct; that SMB-specific constraint should not be mistaken for an iSCSI setting.

Validate the design before relying on it

  1. Inventory the supported stack. Record the hypervisor and version, initiator type, array and target portals, adapters, switch configuration, storage controllers, and applicable vendor support guidance.
  2. Map every path. Trace each intended host-to-target connection through its NIC, uplink, switch, VLAN, subnet, and route. Identify shared components and confirm that host multipathing and array path policies match the target layout.
  3. Check platform-specific rules. On ESXi, verify every port-binding condition before binding, including the shared subnet, broadcast domain, and vSwitch, plus the one-to-one VMkernel-to-physical-NIC mapping. On Hyper-V, confirm the cluster networking, QoS, and management approach fits the Windows Server version and storage protocol.
  4. Test network consistency. Confirm VLAN and routing behavior and check the effective MTU across the full path. Treat jumbo frames as unproven until connectivity works at the selected MTU end to end.
  5. Verify failover and supportability. Use the hypervisor and array’s supported tools and policies to check path visibility and failover behavior. Confirm that NIC and storage drivers and firmware are current and supported by their vendors.

How to compare candidate designs

Use the same criteria for dedicated and converged proposals rather than selecting a design based only on adapter count or a stated MTU. The relevant questions are whether separation meets security needs, whether paths survive the intended failures, whether capacity remains adequate under shared load, whether multipathing matches target portals, whether all components are supported together, and whether the design can be monitored and changed safely.
