For the strongest Apple Intelligence hardware tier, choose iPhone 18 Pro. Apple’s current comparison page places it in the active lineup with an A20 Pro chip, and Apple’s compatibility information lists it as eligible. That is a conclusion from Apple’s published model hierarchy, not an independent performance benchmark.
If your priority is entry cost, start with iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e. Both model families are listed as Apple Intelligence-compatible, but a definitive “cheapest” winner cannot be established without a current regional price, storage configuration, carrier offer, or refurbished-market check.
Apple Intelligence iPhone recommendations at a glance
Every model you consider should pass three tests before you compare cameras, battery claims, or finishes: it must be an eligible iPhone, it must be able to run iOS 27, and its language, Siri language, region, and available storage must meet Apple’s requirements. The table below separates what Apple establishes from what remains a personal buying decision.
| Model or family | Apple Intelligence status | Chip information in Apple’s comparison material | Best fit | Storage statement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | Eligible | A20 Pro | Strongest current hardware tier; buyers who want Apple’s top Pro model | Up to 8 GB for eligible models outside Apple’s named 14 GB group |
| iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max | Eligible | Current comparison page lists them in the active lineup | Pro buyers who want a current alternative to iPhone 18 Pro | Up to 14 GB |
| iPhone Air | Eligible | Current comparison page lists it in the active lineup | Buyers who specifically prefer the Air design and size; evaluate other priorities separately | Up to 14 GB |
| iPhone 17e | Eligible | Current comparison page lists the newer iPhone 17 family | Lower-cost route into Apple Intelligence, subject to your local price | Up to 8 GB |
| iPhone 16e | Eligible | Current comparison page includes the iPhone 16e | Potentially the lowest-cost new entry, but current pricing is not established here | Up to 8 GB |
| Other iPhone 16 models | Eligible | Apple’s compatibility guidance says iPhone 16 models or later | Owners who already have one, or buyers finding a verified remaining unit | Up to 8 GB |
| iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max | Eligible | Apple’s compatibility guidance names both models | Owners who already have one and want to use Apple Intelligence without upgrading | Up to 8 GB |
“Best” therefore has two meanings. iPhone 18 Pro is the best answer if you mean the highest current hardware tier. iPhone 17e or iPhone 16e may be the better answer if you mean the least expensive way into the feature set, but you must verify the price and availability in your country before deciding.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
What Apple Intelligence compatibility actually requires
Apple Intelligence is not enabled solely by buying a recent-looking iPhone. Apple Support says the next generation of Apple Intelligence becomes available on eligible devices when they are updated to the 27.0 software releases in supported languages and regions. For iPhone, that means iOS 27, an eligible model, matching device and Siri languages, and enough free on-device storage.
Eligible iPhone generations
Apple’s compatibility page names iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Apple’s current product and comparison pages also show newer iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 models in the lineup. A standard iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus is not included in the compatibility list cited here; do not assume that every phone with an “iPhone 15” label qualifies.
Software and language matching
Install iOS 27, then make sure the device language and Siri language are the same. A phone set to one language while Siri is set to another can prevent the features from appearing even when the hardware is eligible. Apple warns that feature availability varies by language and region, so eligibility does not mean every tool is offered everywhere or translated identically.

Apple lists English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The list describes supported language families, not a promise that every feature works in every regional variant. Check the language and region settings on the phone you intend to buy, especially if you work across two languages.
Why iPhone 18 Pro is the top recommendation
Apple’s current comparison page places iPhone 18 Pro at the top of the active model hierarchy and identifies an A20 Pro chip. Apple’s compatibility information includes the model, so it meets the basic hardware and software gate for Apple Intelligence. On those published facts, it is the clearest choice for a buyer who wants the strongest current Apple Intelligence hardware tier.
Rank #2
- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
That recommendation is an inference from Apple’s lineup, not a claim that an independent test measured it as faster, cooler, or longer-lasting. The available evidence does not establish sustained-performance results, battery runtime, camera rankings, or a numerical Apple Intelligence speed advantage over every other compatible phone. If those attributes matter more than the chip tier, compare the exact configurations and independent tests available in your market before paying a premium.
When the Pro choice makes sense
- You want Apple’s highest current Pro tier rather than the least expensive compatible model.
- You expect to keep the phone through several iOS releases and prefer more hardware headroom than an entry model provides.
- You use Apple Intelligence frequently and would rather start at the top of Apple’s current hierarchy than optimize for initial purchase cost.
When it may not be the right value
- Your only requirement is access to Apple Intelligence; several less expensive families are also listed as compatible.
- Your region, preferred language, or a feature’s server-side limit matters more than the processor label.
- You need a verified battery, camera, or street-price advantage. Those comparisons are not established by Apple’s compatibility pages alone.
Is iPhone 17e or iPhone 16e the cheapest iPhone with Apple Intelligence?
Both iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e are listed as compatible, making them the two sensible starting points for a lower-cost comparison. However, “cheapest” is a market claim, not a compatibility claim. It depends on country, storage capacity, tax, retailer inventory, carrier financing, promotional credits, and whether you are considering new or refurbished stock.
Recommended Free Tools
No current street-price survey or carrier promotion is established here. Before calling either model the cheapest, compare the same storage capacity and warranty terms in your region. A lower advertised price can represent a smaller capacity, a limited-time offer, an activation requirement, or used inventory rather than a like-for-like new phone.
A practical value comparison
- Write down the exact model, storage capacity, condition, and warranty for each offer.
- Confirm that the phone is an iPhone 17e or iPhone 16e variant listed as eligible, not a similarly named older model.
- Check that the seller supports returns and that the phone can update to iOS 27.
- Compare the total cost after taxes, activation, financing, and required service—not only the headline payment.
- Reserve enough free storage for Apple Intelligence before moving your data.
If the two phones are close in total cost, the newer family may be the more sensible long-term purchase, but the available evidence does not provide a quantified longevity, battery, or camera advantage. Make that decision using the price gap and your non-Apple-Intelligence priorities.
How much storage does Apple Intelligence need?
Apple says Apple Intelligence can use up to 14 GB of storage on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Apple says up to 8 GB is required on other eligible iPhone models. The word “up to” matters: the allowance is a maximum stated requirement, not a promise that every phone will consume exactly that amount at all times.
Rank #3
- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
| Eligible group | Apple’s stated storage amount | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air | Up to 14 GB | Leave more free space than the minimum you expect to need, especially before a major update or a large photo transfer. |
| Other eligible iPhone models, including iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, other iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro models | Up to 8 GB | Verify free space before updating and avoid filling the phone to capacity. |
Prepare storage before setup
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and note the available capacity.
- Install iOS 27 only after confirming that enough space is available for the update and the Apple Intelligence models.
- Remove or move large downloads, duplicate videos, and apps you no longer use if storage is tight.
- Keep additional working room for normal iOS updates, photos, messages, and app caches; Apple’s 8 GB or 14 GB figure is not a recommendation to fill every remaining byte.
- After setup, return to iPhone Storage to see whether the device has downloaded the required models.
If Apple Intelligence does not appear after an eligible phone is updated, storage is one of the first checks. Also verify the language pairing and region; a hardware upgrade alone cannot override those requirements.

Apple describes a mix of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute. Its product page states, “Your data is never stored” and “Used only for your requests.” In practical terms, supported requests can be handled on the iPhone, while some workloads use Apple’s cloud infrastructure. Those statements describe Apple’s service design; they do not mean every request is processed entirely offline.
Apple also says some server-side features have daily limits. The examples named in its documentation include Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts. A temporary limit can therefore be a service constraint rather than evidence that your iPhone is incompatible.
Questions to ask if privacy is your deciding factor
- Can the task run on-device, or does it require Private Cloud Compute?
- Is the feature subject to a daily server-side limit?
- Does the current language and region support the exact feature you want?
- Are you comfortable with the request being processed under Apple’s stated cloud design when on-device processing is insufficient?
Choosing by chip, display, camera, and battery priorities
Apple’s comparison page is useful for identifying the current model hierarchy and chip sequence, but the compatibility material does not provide independent camera tests, battery-runtime measurements, sustained-performance tests, or current street prices. Do not turn the Apple Intelligence compatibility list into a camera or battery ranking.
Chip priority
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if your main question is which compatible iPhone sits at the top of Apple’s current hardware hierarchy. If your use is limited to occasional writing assistance, summaries, or image tools, a compatible entry model may satisfy the requirement without buying the top tier.
Rank #4
- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
Display priority
Screen size and display comfort are separate from Apple Intelligence eligibility. Compare the exact model specifications and handle the phone if possible. The available compatibility evidence does not establish a display-size winner.
Camera priority
All eligible models are not automatically equivalent for photography. Apple’s compatibility pages do not establish camera quality, sensor differences, low-light results, or video rankings. If photography is central to your purchase, use an independently verified camera comparison for the exact models and storage configurations you are considering.
Battery priority
Likewise, compatibility does not establish battery life. Battery runtime varies with display settings, network conditions, camera use, cloud activity, and software versions. Require a test performed on the exact model and software version rather than inferring endurance from Apple Intelligence eligibility.

iPhone 18 Pro
Pick this model when you want Apple’s strongest current Apple Intelligence hardware tier. The A20 Pro designation and its position on Apple’s comparison page support that conclusion. It is not automatically the best value, and the evidence here does not quantify gains in battery, camera, or sustained performance.

iPhone Air
Apple lists iPhone Air as eligible and places it in the group for which up to 14 GB may be used. Choose it when its design and other device characteristics match your needs; do not assume the Air label alone makes it faster or better for every Apple Intelligence task.
iPhone 17e
This is one of the clearest lower-cost entry points because Apple lists the family as compatible. Its stated Apple Intelligence allowance is up to 8 GB. Compare its total local price, storage capacity, warranty, and availability with iPhone 16e rather than relying on a generic “e” label.
iPhone 16e
Yes, iPhone 16e supports Apple Intelligence. Apple lists the family as compatible, and the other-eligible-model storage allowance is up to 8 GB. It may be the least expensive new route in some markets, but no universal cheapest price is established; verify current offers before deciding.

Other iPhone 16 models
Apple’s compatibility guidance covers iPhone 16 models or later. If you already own one, check the update, language, region, and free-storage requirements before replacing it. If you are buying one now, confirm that the seller’s exact model is eligible and compare its total cost with newer alternatives.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
These are the oldest iPhone models named in Apple’s compatibility guidance. They can be a practical option for existing owners who want Apple Intelligence without a new purchase. For a new buyer, consider age, condition, warranty, storage, and update expectations separately; compatibility alone does not establish that a used unit is a better value.
Buying checklist before you pay
- Model: Confirm the exact model name and that it appears in Apple’s eligible list.
- Software: Verify that iOS 27 can be installed or updated on the phone.
- Storage: Plan for up to 8 GB on most eligible models or up to 14 GB on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.
- Language: Match the device and Siri languages and confirm that your preferred language is supported.
- Region: Check feature availability where you live; Apple says availability varies by language and region.
- Price: Compare equivalent capacity, taxes, financing, activation requirements, warranty, and return rights.
- Condition: For refurbished or used phones, check battery condition, parts history, carrier lock, and update eligibility.
- Non-AI priorities: Validate camera, display, battery, and connectivity claims using current tests for the exact model.
- Service limits: Expect that some cloud-backed tools may have daily limits.
Troubleshooting when Apple Intelligence is missing
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the current iOS 27 release available for the device.
- Check the model number against Apple’s compatibility list; do not rely only on the phone’s marketing name.
- In Settings > General > Language & Region, set a supported device language.
- In Siri settings, select the same language used by the device.
- Review Settings > General > iPhone Storage and free space if necessary.
- Confirm that your country or region supports the feature you are trying to use.
- Allow time for required models to download after the update, then restart the phone if the feature remains unavailable.
- If a cloud-backed feature stops responding after repeated use, check whether a daily server-side limit has been reached rather than assuming the hardware has failed.
The final buying decision
Choose iPhone 18 Pro when “best” means the highest current Apple Intelligence hardware tier and you accept that the recommendation is based on Apple’s lineup, not an independent benchmark. Choose between iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e when “best” means an affordable compatible entry, but determine the winner from a current like-for-like price and warranty comparison in your region. Existing iPhone 16 owners and iPhone 15 Pro owners may not need to upgrade at all: if the phone is eligible, iOS 27, matching languages, supported region, and available storage are the conditions that unlock Apple Intelligence.
