Live Activities work on an app-by-app basis. An iPhone does not automatically make every app compatible: the developer must add Apple’s ActivityKit support, and the user must allow the activity. Apple’s confirmed examples include Maps directions, sports updates and food-delivery estimates; Apple Sports has its own team-by-team controls.
There is no single, complete official directory of every compatible third-party app. The most reliable approach is to check the app’s current description, its in-app settings and Settings > Apps > [app name] > Live Activities when that menu is available.

What Live Activities are
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines describe a Live Activity as something that lets people “track the progress of an activity, event, or task at a glance.” It is a persistent, glanceable status view for an event that is happening now, rather than a normal notification feed.
On an iPhone, a Live Activity can appear on the Lock Screen. On iPhone models with a Dynamic Island, the same activity may also appear there in a compact or expanded form. Apple also documents related views in CarPlay. What appears depends on the app’s implementation, the iPhone model and the surface being used.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Examples include turn-by-turn directions, a game score that is changing during a match or an estimated delivery status. The app creates and updates the activity; iOS only provides the presentation and permission controls.
Verified apps and categories that support Live Activities
The following examples are supported by Apple’s published documentation. They are examples, not an exhaustive compatibility list.
| App or category | Activity shown | Documented surfaces | Controls and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Sports | Live scores and play updates for followed teams | iPhone Lock Screen; other presentation details depend on the device | You choose teams, enable or disable activities and adjust update frequency. Availability and features can vary by country or region. |
| Apple Maps | Directions and navigation progress | Dynamic Island on supported iPhones and CarPlay | Apple’s example confirms the activity type; additional app-level controls are not stated in the cited guidance. |
| Food-delivery apps | Delivery estimates and progress | CarPlay; other surfaces are not stated in the cited example | Apple does not name a specific delivery service in that example, so the category should not be treated as confirmation that every delivery app supports Live Activities. |
| Live sports apps | Scores and other live sports updates | Apple identifies the category; the exact surface varies by app and device | Apple Sports is the specifically documented app. Individual sports apps must be checked separately. |
| Other apps | Any ongoing task the developer chooses to expose | Not stated; depends on the implementation | No complete current roster is published in Apple’s ActivityKit and support documentation. |
Why there is no definitive list of every compatible app
Live Activities are an opt-in feature at the app level. A developer has to build the activity with ActivityKit, decide what information to publish and maintain that implementation as the app changes. Installing iOS or owning an iPhone with a Dynamic Island does not add the feature to apps that have not implemented it.
Support can also change without a hardware change. An app update may add or remove activities, a feature may launch only in selected countries, or a service may expose an activity only for certain events. Apple’s developer guidance also documents user authorization checks and the ability for users to deactivate an app’s activities.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For those reasons, a web list that claims to include every compatible app will become incomplete quickly unless it identifies the app version, region and date. Apple’s official material gives reliable examples and implementation guidance, but not a comprehensive third-party inventory.
How to check whether a specific app supports Live Activities
Check the app’s current listing
Open the app’s App Store page and read the current feature description and release notes. Look for “Live Activities,” “Lock Screen updates” or Dynamic Island support. The wording is controlled by the developer, so the absence of the phrase is not absolute proof that the feature is unavailable, but a current listing is a useful first check.
Check iPhone settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app you want to inspect.
- Look for Live Activities. If the control is present, use it to allow or block that app’s activities.
The menu is not shown for every app. Its absence usually means the app has not declared the capability, the installed version does not expose it or the setting is unavailable in that configuration.
Check the app itself
Many apps require an in-app choice before an activity starts. Look in the app’s settings, account or notification area for a Live Activities switch, followed teams, active orders or similar controls. A permission switch alone will not create an activity when there is no live event to display.

How to turn on Live Activities for Apple Sports
Apple Sports provides the clearest documented setup because it lets you choose exactly which teams can appear.
- Open Apple Sports and follow the teams or leagues you care about.
- In Apple Sports, open Manage Live Activities.
- Enable updates for the teams you want to see.
- To change the update frequency or the app-level permission, open Settings > Apps > Sports > Live Activities.
Apple notes that more frequent updates can use more battery. Apple Sports availability and features can vary by country or region, so a missing option may reflect local availability rather than a problem with your iPhone.
How Live Activities differ across the Lock Screen, Dynamic Island and CarPlay
Lock Screen
The Lock Screen is the broadest documented destination. Apple Sports live scores and play updates are specifically described there. The activity remains available for quick status checks without opening the app, subject to the app’s timing and update rules.

Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island is available only on supported iPhone models. Apple uses Maps directions as an example of an activity that can be visible there. A compatible app may still show a Lock Screen activity without offering a Dynamic Island presentation, because the developer controls each presentation and the phone’s hardware determines whether the surface exists.

CarPlay
Apple’s CarPlay guidance uses Maps directions and food-delivery estimates as examples. Seeing an activity in CarPlay therefore depends on both the app’s CarPlay and Live Activities implementation. A delivery app that supports an activity on the Lock Screen is not automatically confirmed to support it in CarPlay.
Why a supported app may show nothing
Compatibility is only one part of the process. Use this checklist when an expected activity does not appear:
- No active event: Live Activities track an ongoing task. An app may not display anything until a trip, game, order or other qualifying event has started.
- App permission is off: Check Settings > Apps > [app name] > Live Activities, then check any matching switch inside the app.
- Team, order or account selection is incomplete: Apple Sports requires you to follow teams and enable them in Manage Live Activities. Other services may require an active order or signed-in account.
- Region or version limitation: Apple documents that Apple Sports features can vary by country or region. Developers can also limit support to particular app versions or markets.
- Device-surface limitation: A Lock Screen activity may be available on an iPhone that does not have a Dynamic Island. Dynamic Island and CarPlay presentations require the relevant hardware and implementation.
- The developer changed support: An update can alter, pause or remove an activity. Recheck the current App Store description and in-app settings.
- Updates are intentionally infrequent: Some apps expose an activity but update it at a controlled interval. In Apple Sports, choosing more frequent updates is optional and may use more battery.
These checks distinguish a permission problem from a feature that simply is not offered for the current event, region, device or app version.

What developers have to implement
ActivityKit is Apple’s framework for creating Live Activities. The developer defines the activity’s content, starts it when an eligible event begins, sends updates and ends it when the task is complete. The app also needs to request or check the appropriate authorization state.

- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
This architecture explains why compatibility is not automatic. iOS can render an activity only after an app has supplied one. It also explains why two apps in the same category can behave differently: one may support a Lock Screen view, another may add Dynamic Island or CarPlay presentations, and a third may offer no Live Activity at all.
Battery, privacy and notification expectations
Live Activities are designed for progress tracking, not as a general-purpose stream of every notification. The app chooses which changes are important enough to publish and how frequently to update them. Apple specifically warns that more frequent Apple Sports updates can use more battery.
The information shown is also determined by the app. A delivery service might show an estimate, while a sports app might show a score and play state. If you do not want an app’s status visible, disable its Live Activities permission in Settings or use the app’s own control when available.

- Identify the activity: Is there a live trip, game, order or other ongoing task?
- Confirm developer support: Check the current App Store description and release notes.
- Enable both layers of permission: Use the app’s controls and the iPhone setting under Settings > Apps.
- Check the destination: Decide whether you need the Lock Screen, Dynamic Island or CarPlay; support for one does not prove support for the others.
- Check local conditions: Verify your country or region, installed app version and device model if the option is missing.
- Start a real event: A permission toggle will not display an activity without an eligible live task.
Bottom line on compatible iPhone apps
Apple Sports, Apple Maps directions, live sports updates and food-delivery estimates are the clearest officially documented examples. Apple Sports offers the most specific controls: followed teams, a Manage Live Activities screen and an update-frequency setting. For every other app, compatibility must be verified individually because support is implemented by each developer and can vary by app version, region, device and settings.
