There is no reliable citywide winner for internet service in Boston: the best option depends on what is wired into your building and available at your exact address. Check address-level eligibility first, then compare fiber and cable plans on upload speed, total monthly cost, equipment, and installation. Consider 5G home internet when wired service is unavailable or wireless setup is a priority.

Why your Boston address matters more than a citywide ranking

Providers can serve Boston without serving every building—or every unit in a building. The City of Boston says access may differ by apartment and that landlord arrangements can affect residents’ choices. Verizon and Astound likewise direct customers to check availability by address. Start with the provider’s address lookup and ask your landlord or building manager which services and wiring are available in your unit.

The City of Boston’s 2025 Municipal Digital Equity Plan reported that Verizon offered symmetrical fiber service to approximately 85 percent of Boston addresses, based on cited FCC data and analysis. That dated, city-level figure is useful context, not confirmation that Fios is available at your home.

Compare the main Boston internet options

The City lists Xfinity—Comcast, NetBlazr, Astound—RCN, Starry, and Verizon as residential providers in Boston. That list establishes local relevance, not availability at a particular address or a current ranking. The plan details below are provider-published offers, not independent performance tests; confirm current terms and eligibility before signing up.

Verizon Fios Verizon describes Fios as 100% fiber optic. Availability varies by building and street. Verizon lists 300/300 Mbps at $30/month; 500/500 Mbps at $65/month; 1 Gig, up to 940/880 Mbps, at $80/month; 2 Gig, average wired download and upload of 1.5–2.3 Gbps, at $90/month; and 5 Gig, average wired download and upload of 4.5–5.3 Gbps, at $100/month. Listed prices include an Auto Pay discount. Verizon says its options include Wi-Fi 6 or 6E equipment and no annual contract; price-lock terms vary by plan. Verify address availability and current offers.
Verizon 5G Home Wireless home internet; Verizon describes it as an option for addresses not covered by Fios. Verizon lists options from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, starting at $50/month. Verizon says most installations require no wiring and offer self-installation. Actual service depends on the address and wireless conditions.
Astound residential internet Available in parts of Boston and Greater Boston. Astound describes its network as fiber-powered, with fiber in select Boston neighborhoods; confirm whether service at your address is fiber or cable. Astound advertises standard residential service starting at 300 Mbps for $30/month. Availability and offers change. Astound says customers may bring their own modem; for 1 Gigabit and higher service in select areas, it specifies a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with a 2.5GE physical LAN port. Confirm plan and address compatibility.
Astound Internet First Discount program for qualifying households. Astound lists 50 Mbps at $9.95/month or 150 Mbps at $19.95/month. Eligibility, taxes, and terms apply; confirm current availability and qualification.

Astound’s advertised prices and Verizon’s listed prices can depend on eligibility, discounts, address, equipment, fees, and current offers. Ask each provider for the full monthly cost and terms at your address rather than treating a starting price as a guaranteed bill.

How to choose between fiber, cable, and 5G home internet

Fiber: compare upload and download performance

Fiber is worth checking first when available, especially if you regularly upload large files, make video calls, work remotely, or share a connection with several people. Verizon describes Fios as offering near-symmetrical upload and download speeds on most plans; its listed Fios tiers show matching upload and download figures at 300 and 500 Mbps. Actual plan details vary, so compare the speeds offered for your address rather than assuming all fiber tiers perform alike.

  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Cable: check the upload speed, equipment, and plan terms

Cable can be a suitable wired option when fiber is unavailable. Download speed alone does not tell the whole story: Verizon describes Xfinity’s hybrid fiber-coaxial service as having lower upload ranges than download. Check the specific plan’s upload speed, data policies, equipment requirements, and total cost. Astound describes its network as fiber-powered, but says fiber is available only in select Boston neighborhoods; verify the connection type serving your home.

5G home internet: a wireless alternative

5G home internet may be useful if wired service does not reach your unit or you want a setup that, according to Verizon, usually needs no wiring and can be self-installed. Wireless coverage maps are only a screening aid: the FCC says mobile coverage is modeled and may not reflect indoor availability. Check the provider’s address-specific offer and consider how wireless conditions at your home could affect service.

Use availability maps as a starting point, not a promise

The FCC National Broadband Map shows fixed broadband availability submitted by internet service providers on a location-by-location basis. Its mobile coverage areas are based on propagation modeling; actual experience can vary with device, network capacity, and terrain, and the map does not show indoor mobile availability. The FCC says it updates the map through verification, provider data, location updates, and public input. Check the map, then confirm directly with the provider and your building.

A practical checklist before you sign up

  1. Check your exact address. Use each provider’s address lookup, then ask the building manager whether the service and required wiring reach your unit.
  2. Compare upload and download speeds. Upload matters for video calls, remote work, gaming, and sending large files; advertised maximum download speed alone is not enough.
  3. Calculate the full cost. Confirm whether the advertised price depends on Auto Pay, a promotion, eligibility, or other conditions, and ask about equipment, installation, fees, and price-lock terms.
  4. Confirm equipment and data policies. If bringing your own modem, verify that it is compatible with the exact plan and address. Astound’s stated 2.5GE-port requirement applies to its 1 Gigabit-and-higher service in select areas, not to every Boston internet customer.
  5. Choose based on how you use the connection. For upload-heavy work, prioritize upload speed and connection type. If wired service is inaccessible or wireless installation is preferable, check 5G home internet while accounting for indoor coverage uncertainty.

What a Boston-wide provider list can—and cannot—tell you

A third-party provider map lists Xfinity, Astound, Verizon, Starry, wireless providers, and satellite options, but its estimates use Boston census boundaries and provider-reported availability. Those estimates can be overoptimistic for a specific address. Use the map only to identify candidates, then verify service with the provider, the FCC map, and your building.
