Start with your headphones’ EQ, then review sound-enhancement features, ANC or ambient mode, Bluetooth connection quality, and any auto-off timer. There is no universally best EQ setting, and battery gains vary by model. Change one setting at a time and compare using familiar audio at a consistent volume.
Which settings should you adjust first?
Use your headphone maker’s current app or manual to find the available controls; names and features differ by model. A practical order is to tune sound first, then decide which processing and noise-control features you need, and finally check connection and idle-power options.
- Find the controls: Open the companion app or consult the manual for your exact headphone model.
- Note your current settings: This gives you a baseline and makes it easy to restore a preferred setup.
- Change one control at a time: Listen to the same passage at a consistent volume before and after the change.
- Observe runtime during ordinary use: Battery life depends on the model, settings, and how the headphones are used.
How should you adjust EQ for better sound?
Begin with the default EQ, then make modest changes to bass, mids, or treble according to your preference. There is no single curve that suits every listener, recording, or headphone. Judge the result with familiar audio rather than assuming that more bass or treble is automatically better.
EQ controls are not universal. For compatible products, Sony lists Equalizer among the customizable options in its Sound Connect app: Sony Sound Connect.

Which sound-processing features can affect battery life?
Upscaling and other enhancement features may change the presentation in ways you like, but can reduce runtime on some models. Sony recommends turning off DSEE HX Auto and Equalizer to conserve battery on WF-1000XM3 earbuds. The effect is specific to that model and does not establish the savings another pair will deliver.

These are maximums for the specified earbuds and settings, not guaranteed listening times. Sony notes that usage time varies with settings and use: “The usage time varies depending on the setting or and how they are used.” The support article was last modified on 2025-12-15. Use noise canceling (ANC) when reducing outside sound is useful, and ambient or transparency mode when you want to hear more of your surroundings. If neither is needed and runtime matters, try switching them off. Keep awareness and safety in mind when choosing a mode.

Do not expect a fixed battery saving across headphones. In Sony’s WF-1000XM3 table, the listed maximum for ANC on and ambient mode on is the same in the configurations shown, while the maximum is longer with both off. That model-specific example does not predict the difference for other headphones.
Which Bluetooth connection-quality option should you choose?
If your headphones offer a choice between sound-quality priority and stable-connection priority, use sound-quality priority when your listening setup can sustain it. Choose stable-connection priority when dropouts are more disruptive than the potential sound-quality trade-off. Sony notes that the wireless playback-quality effect depends on the connected Bluetooth device; availability and behavior depend on compatible hardware. See Sony’s WF-1000XM3 support information.

Should you enable an auto-off timer?
An auto-off option can reduce power use while headphones are idle, if your model provides one. Pick a timeout that fits how you use them so the headphones do not switch off unexpectedly. For example, Bose documents selectable auto-off behavior for its Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 through the Bose Music app: Bose’s auto-off instructions.
How can you tell whether a change helped?
- For sound, compare the same familiar passage at the same volume.
- For battery, compare ordinary listening sessions rather than relying on a single short test.
- For Bluetooth, judge both perceived quality and whether the connection remains stable in your usual setup.
- For ANC or ambient sound, weigh runtime against how much noise reduction or awareness you need.
If a change does not help, restore the previous setting and try another control. Model-specific apps and manuals are the best guides to the exact names and behavior of your headphones’ settings.
