For most players, Grand Theft Auto V is the better buy for police chases because Rockstar currently lists a PS5 edition and GTA Online includes police-enabled Pursuit Series races. Choose Grand Theft Auto IV instead if you specifically want a chase built around escaping a visible police search area. The choice is about chase style, not a measured ranking of police AI.
How the police chases differ
GTA V: pursuit pressure and structured races
GTA V uses a one-to-five-star wanted scale. The Xbox-hosted Grand Theft Auto V — Game Help says that five stars bring the National Guard. Rockstar also identifies tunnels as one way to escape a pursuit. In GTA Online, Lester can remove a wanted level for a fee.

For players who want chase action in a competitive format, GTA Online has the Pursuit Series: Rockstar’s July 2021 Los Santos Tuners update notes describe seven point-to-point races run while wanted by police. Rockstar’s Race Creator guide also explains that enabling Wanted Level lets police chase race participants.
GTA IV: escape a visible search area
GTA IV’s wanted system is described in a secondary reference as a visible search radius centered on the last place police saw the player. If police spot the player again, the search refocuses. That creates a cat-and-mouse escape loop: break away, stay out of sight, and get beyond the search area. This is a mechanic description, not an official statement about current platform availability.

Rockstar’s store listing confirms a GTA V edition for PS5 and identifies Story Mode as included; GTA Online is listed separately. Rockstar’s PC listing includes both Enhanced and Legacy editions. Check your platform and the exact edition on the store before purchasing, since the appropriate option depends on what you play on.

How to make the choice
- Pick GTA V if you want a verified PS5 purchase path or want to race against other players with police actively pursuing you.
- Pick GTA IV if the search-area escape mechanic is the main attraction, and confirm current availability for your platform before paying.
- Do not treat either as a proven winner for police intelligence. The available evidence establishes different chase mechanics and modes, not a controlled comparison of police AI or enjoyment.
