For a crashing or freezing app on Google TV Streamer, begin with the least disruptive fixes: update the app, force stop it, restart the streamer, and install any available system update. If the device is short on storage, clear temporary cached data or remove apps you no longer use. Check Wi-Fi only when the symptom looks like a connection problem. Clearing app data is a later step, and a factory reset should be the final option because it erases device data.
Google presents these actions as troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed cures. The right setting depends on whether one app fails, the whole device is slow, storage is nearly full, or playback behaves like a network problem.
Which setting should you try first?
Match the intervention to the symptom instead of changing everything at once. This keeps your data intact and makes it easier to identify what helped.
| What you notice | Start here | What to avoid initially |
|---|---|---|
| One app repeatedly crashes | Update that app, then use Settings > Apps to force stop it | Factory reset or clearing data immediately |
| Several apps lag, or the interface freezes | Restart the device, close recently opened apps, update apps, then check for a system update | Assuming the Wi-Fi is the cause without connection symptoms |
| Warnings about storage or unusually slow behavior | Clear cached data or uninstall unused apps | Deleting app data unless earlier steps fail |
| Buffering, failed streams, or behavior that changes with network conditions | Inspect Wi-Fi settings, the connected band, router placement, or a wired connection | Treating a network adjustment as a universal crash fix |
| Persistent device-wide failure after the earlier steps | Consider clearing app data, then a factory reset only if necessary | Resetting before understanding the data-loss consequence |
There is no published success percentage for these settings. Google’s help pages describe a sequence of actions and cautions, rather than promising that a particular switch will permanently improve stability.

Fix a crash limited to one app
1. Install the app’s latest update
Open the Google Play Store on the streamer and check for an update for the affected app. You can update that app individually or use the option to update all apps. An outdated app can contain bugs that its developer has already addressed, so this is the safest first change because it does not remove the app’s local data.
After the update finishes, open the app and reproduce the action that previously caused the crash. Do not judge performance while several updates are still installing; Google notes that the device can run slower during app updates.
2. Force stop the app
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose the app that is failing.
- Select Force stop, confirm if prompted, and then reopen the app.
Force stopping ends the app’s current process. It is different from clearing app data: your sign-in information, preferences, downloads, and other locally stored app information are not intentionally removed by the force-stop command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Restart, then check the system software
If the app still crashes, restart Google TV Streamer. A restart clears the current running session and can resolve a temporary process or memory problem without changing your setup. Once the device is back at the home screen, check for a system update at Settings > System > About > System update. Install an available update, allow it to complete, and test the app again.
4. Escalate an app-only failure to the developer
When one app continues to fail after its update, a force stop, a device restart, and applicable system updates, Google directs users to contact that app’s developer. This distinction matters: if the rest of Google TV works normally, resetting the entire streamer is disproportionate to a problem confined to one application.

Reduce lag or freezing across Google TV
Restart before changing more settings
For a slow home screen, delayed navigation, or freezes affecting multiple apps, restart the device first. Then force stop recently opened apps from the Apps area. Closing apps that are no longer needed reduces the number of active processes while you test whether the interface responds normally.
Update apps and wait for the updates to finish
Use the Play Store to update installed apps, then allow background installation to finish before evaluating speed. Google specifically warns that Google TV can be slower while app updates are in progress. A device that feels sluggish during a large update may return to normal afterward, so avoid interrupting the process or treating temporary update-time lag as proof of a permanent fault.

Check for a Google TV system update
Open Settings > System > About > System update and install an update if one is offered. System software can affect the device as a whole, unlike an update limited to one app. Restart after installation if the on-screen instructions request it, then test navigation and more than one app.
Consider Quick Start only when it is available
Google’s slow-device guidance includes Quick Start as an optional setting, but it cautions that the exact steps vary by device. If Quick Start appears in your Google TV Streamer settings, follow the label and instructions shown on your screen. Do not assume that a menu path from another Google TV model will be identical. Quick Start is an additional option after the basic restart and update checks, not a replacement for them.
Free storage without deleting important app information
Clear cached data
Low free space can contribute to poor behavior and can prevent apps from completing updates. Google’s device-specific path for clearing temporary cache data is:

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Storage.
- Choose Internal shared storage.
- Select Cached data and confirm the clearing action.
Google explains that clearing an app cache removes temporary data. It is therefore a lower-risk storage action than clearing app data, although an app may need to recreate thumbnails or other temporary files the next time it runs.
Uninstall apps you do not use
To remove an unused app, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps, select the app, and choose the uninstall option shown on the screen. Remove only apps you recognize as unnecessary. If an app contains downloads or offline content you still need, check the app first because uninstalling it can remove that content.
After freeing space, return to the Play Store and complete pending app updates. Storage cleanup is intended to give the system and apps room to operate; it is not evidence that every crash is caused by storage.
Check Wi-Fi only for network-shaped symptoms
Connection troubleshooting is appropriate when video buffers, streams fail to start, playback quality changes with distance from the router, or apps report a network error. It is not a universal remedy for an app that crashes immediately while the rest of the device has a normal connection.
Verify the network and band
- Open Settings > Network and Internet.
- Confirm that Google TV Streamer is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network.
- Check which Wi-Fi band is being used when the interface exposes that information.
Google suggests rebooting the router or moving it to improve the connection. Where available, a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network may be useful, although range and wall penetration can differ from a lower-frequency band. A wired connection is another option when the streamer and router can be connected by cable.

Separate network faults from app faults
Retest the same app after the network change and compare it with another streaming app. If several services improve, the connection was likely part of the problem. If only one app still crashes while other apps play normally, return to the app-specific sequence and use the developer-support route rather than repeatedly changing router settings.

Clearing an app’s data is more disruptive than force stopping it or removing its cache. It can remove the app’s saved settings, accounts, downloads, and other local information, depending on how that app stores data. Use it only after updating, force stopping, restarting, checking system software, and addressing an applicable storage or network issue.
Before confirming an app-data clear, check whether you know the account credentials needed to sign in again and whether offline content can be downloaded again. If the app provides its own backup or synchronization option, verify that important information has synced first. The exact control may be labeled Clear data or similar in the selected app’s settings; read the confirmation screen carefully.
Factory reset is the last resort
Google includes factory reset at the end of its general device-troubleshooting sequence. A factory reset erases data on Google TV Streamer and returns it to an out-of-box setup state. That means accounts, installed apps, preferences, and locally stored app information must be configured again.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a reset only when the device-wide problem persists after restarts, app and system updates, storage cleanup, relevant network checks, and less disruptive app-data troubleshooting. Before starting, record the accounts you will need, make sure any recoverable app data is synchronized, and understand that a reset will not fix a defect in a single third-party app’s code. If the failure is isolated to one app, contacting its developer is the more targeted escalation.
A practical test sequence
Change one category at a time and retest the same task. This sequence preserves the diagnostic value of each result:
- Write down whether the failure affects one app, several apps, or the whole device.
- Update the affected app, or all apps if the problem is broad.
- Force stop the affected app, or recently opened apps for a device-wide slowdown.
- Restart Google TV Streamer.
- Install a system update from Settings > System > About > System update if one is available.
- If storage is low, clear cached data or uninstall unused apps.
- If symptoms are clearly connection-related, check Settings > Network and Internet and try the applicable router, band, or wired-connection adjustment.
- Only then consider clearing app data; reserve factory reset for continuing device-wide failure.
Keep expectations realistic: Google’s support guidance supplies ordered troubleshooting actions, not a guarantee that a particular setting will cure crashes or freezes. The least destructive action that matches the symptom is the best starting point.
