Change the settings that affect ownership, crawling, link handling, access, and discovery—but only after the new site is verified and its redirects are live. Verify both old and new properties (including every HTTP/HTTPS and www/non-www variant you actually use), reproduce applicable settings such as crawl-rate preferences and disavow files, submit the new sitemap, then use Change of Address for an eligible domain-level move. The tool transfers signals; it does not replace URL mapping, 301 redirects, or post-migration monitoring.
What to change, in the right order
A domain migration has two separate parts: moving the website and telling Google how the old URLs correspond to the new ones. Search Console settings support that process, but they cannot repair missing redirects or an incomplete URL map. Work in this order:
- Prepare the new site and map every important old URL to its equivalent destination.
- Verify the old and new Search Console properties, plus the protocol and host variants that exist.
- Review the old property’s settings and reproduce the ones that still apply.
- Launch the site with permanent redirects, then submit Change of Address if the move qualifies.
- Submit the new sitemap and monitor both properties while Google recrawls the sites.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: filing a Change of Address request while the destination is not reachable or before redirects provide Google with a reliable URL-by-URL mapping.
Verify both properties and every URL variant
Change of Address requires the same Google account to own the source and destination properties. Add the new domain to Search Console before the launch, and keep the old property available for diagnostics after the switch.

Use the property types that match the move
A domain property covers a domain and its protocols and hosts, while a URL-prefix property covers only the exact prefix entered. For a migration, verify the domain-level properties when possible, then verify any specific URL-prefix variants you use for troubleshooting or reporting. Check the combinations that actually resolve on your site:

Google’s migration guidance advises verifying both sites and relevant variants. A request submitted for one property does not automatically handle every separate subordinate subdomain, so each moving old-domain subdomain variant needs its own verified property and, where applicable, its own request.
Make verification survive the cutover
Changing URLs can invalidate a verification token. Before launch, confirm that the method used on the new property will remain available:
- If you use an HTML verification file, copy the file to the new site and keep it accessible at the expected path.
- If you use an HTML meta tag, retain the tag in the new site’s home-page markup.
- If verification depends on Google Analytics, preserve the required Analytics implementation and account access.
Do not remove the old verification file or tag immediately. Keeping it in place makes it easier to inspect the old property while redirects are being crawled.
Review old settings and reproduce what still applies
There is no universal one-click transfer for every Search Console setting. Compare the old property with the new one and carry over only settings that describe the new site or that Google specifically requires you to re-enter.

Crawl-rate setting
Google’s migration instructions say to set the crawl rate to “Let Googlebot determine” for both the old and new sites. If an older property contains a manually chosen rate, review why it was set and return both properties to the recommended automatic setting unless Google has given your site a different instruction.
Disavowed backlinks
If the old domain has a disavow file, upload that file again for the new site using the Search Console account that owns the destination property. Treat this as a deliberate re-upload: a file associated with the old property should not be assumed to follow the domain automatically. Preserve the exact file you approved previously, and document its date and purpose so a later reviewer can distinguish it from a new link audit.

Manual actions and URL removals
For a newly acquired domain, inspect the destination property for manual actions and existing URL-removal requests. A previous owner’s unresolved action can affect the site you are acquiring, while a removal request can keep a URL out of Google even after you publish useful content. Record what you find and resolve or allow each item to expire according to its status; do not assume a clean migration erased the prior configuration.
Users and permissions
Open the property’s users-and-permissions area and confirm that the people and service accounts who administer the migration can access the new property. Change of Address requires one Google account to be an owner of both properties, so check ownership rather than relying on delegated access alone. Remove former contractors or sellers when the transfer is complete, but keep at least two trusted owners so a lost account does not lock the team out.
Decide whether Change of Address applies
Use Change of Address after the technical move for an eligible domain- or subdomain-level change, such as example.com to example.net. The source and destination must both be owned by the same Google account, and the properties must be domain-level properties. The tool tells Google to favor crawling and indexing the new site over the old one; it is a signal-transfer mechanism, not a redirect service or an instant ranking switch.

A domain-level request includes all paths under the selected source property and its protocols, but not separate subordinate subdomains below that property. Google advises handling every moving variant, including active and inactive www/non-www versions, and verifying those variants first.

Build a URL map
Create a list of important old URLs—HTML pages, downloadable files, images that receive search traffic, and alternate language or mobile URLs where applicable—and assign each one a single, equivalent destination. Avoid sending many unrelated URLs to the new home page. A close topical match preserves user intent and gives Google a clearer replacement.
Implement permanent redirects
At minimum, redirect the old home page to the new home page. Google’s prerequisites also recommend 301 redirects for canonical pages. Use server-side 301 (or another equivalent permanent redirect), preserve paths and query handling deliberately, and test representative URLs from every template. Google Search Central states: “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That does not make redirect quality irrelevant: chains, loops, soft 404 responses, and irrelevant destinations can still prevent users and crawlers from reaching the right content.
Update site signals
- Change canonical tags, internal links, hreflang references, structured-data URLs, and absolute asset URLs to the destination domain.
- Update robots.txt references and any rules that mention the old host.
- Keep the old site available to return redirects rather than allowing the old host to expire or serve unrelated content.
Submit Change of Address in Search Console
Submit only after the destination is live and the redirects have been tested.
- Open Search Console and select the verified old domain-level property.
- Open Settings, then choose Change of address.
- Select the verified destination property offered by the tool.
- Run the validation checks. Search Console checks ownership and tests 301 redirects on a sample of pages.
- Fix every critical failure—such as an unverified destination or missing redirect—then run the checks again. Non-critical warnings may still allow submission, but investigate them before proceeding.
- Submit the request and repeat the process for each other moving old-domain subdomain variant that is not covered by the selected property.
The request does not instantly remove old URLs from Google. It tells Google to emphasize crawling and indexing the new site, while the redirects and content determine which URLs can replace the old ones.

Move and validate the sitemap
Generate a sitemap on the new domain that lists the canonical destination URLs, not URLs that merely redirect. In the new property, open the Sitemaps report and submit the sitemap URL. The report shows sitemaps submitted for the currently selected protocol and host, so verify that you are viewing the destination property rather than an old URL-prefix variant.
Submission helps Google discover URLs but does not guarantee that every listed URL will be crawled or indexed. Replace redirecting URLs with their final destinations and eliminate excessive redirect chains before submitting. Keep the old sitemap available only if it helps discovery during the transition; its entries should not become a permanent list of redirecting URLs.

First days and weeks
Inspect the old and new properties for crawl errors, indexing changes, security issues, manual actions, and sitemap processing. Compare impressions, clicks, and top landing pages by URL pattern rather than expecting a single-day handoff. Google’s guidance says a medium-sized site may take a few weeks or more to show new URLs in place of old ones; larger sites can take longer depending partly on URL volume and server speed.
Keep redirects and the old domain
Maintain the old-to-new redirects for at least 180 days, and longer if Google Search traffic still reaches the old URLs. Google’s Change of Address signals and preference for the new site continue for 180 days. Continue paying for and controlling the old domain for at least one year to reduce the risk that another party acquires it and uses it maliciously.

Old URLs can remain visible when they are still accessible and there is no equivalent destination page. That does not by itself mean the request failed. Check whether the old URL redirects, whether the destination returns a successful response, and whether the destination is canonical and indexable.

Common failures and precise fixes
The tool says the destination is not owned
Verify the destination with the same Google account that owns the source. If access is delegated, add that account as an owner and complete verification on the exact domain-level property selected by the tool.
Redirect checks fail
Test the sampled old URLs outside your browser cache. Confirm they return a single permanent redirect to the corresponding new URL, without a chain through an intermediate host, a redirect loop, a blocked response, or a soft 404. Fix the server or CDN rule, then rerun validation.
One subdomain did not move
Submit and verify the missing old variant separately. A request for the parent domain does not automatically move every subordinate subdomain, including inactive variants that still have historical URLs.

Restore the HTML file, meta tag, or Analytics implementation on the new site, then reverify. Keep DNS and file permissions stable while Google recrawls the migration.
The new sitemap shows no useful progress
Check that the sitemap contains final canonical URLs, that you submitted it under the correct host and protocol property, and that robots.txt does not block those URLs. A successful submission records the file; it does not promise indexing, so inspect individual URL status and server responses as well.
Traffic drops immediately
Check redirect coverage, canonical tags, accidental noindex directives, robots.txt, DNS, server errors, and template-specific URL patterns before changing content. A temporary fluctuation can occur while Google recrawls, but a pattern limited to one directory usually points to a mapping or implementation error.
