Start with the Performance report under Search results. Compare equivalent periods, then inspect clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position by query and page. Next use Page Indexing and URL Inspection to test whether crawling, indexing, or canonicalization changed. For a broad disappearance, check Manual actions and Security issues.
This sequence separates a genuine position change from lower demand, a different result presentation, an indexing failure, a property-scope mistake, or a sitewide policy problem. Search Console can show what changed and where; its reports do not, by themselves, prove why it changed.
1. Confirm the property and comparison window
Before interpreting a chart, verify that the Search Console property covers the URLs you are investigating. A domain property, a URL-prefix property, and separate HTTP, HTTPS, www, or non-www properties can show different data. Google lists a mismatched property as a common reason for apparently missing traffic.

Choose comparable dates
In Performance, compare equivalent periods rather than an arbitrary before-and-after. A Monday-to-Sunday week compared with a holiday week can look like a ranking collapse when demand simply changed. Use weekly or monthly trends when daily values are noisy, and account for recurring seasonality in the site’s audience.

Record important context before drawing a conclusion: a site move, a recent crawl delay, a removal request, a template deployment, a major news event, or a normal seasonal lull can all overlap the same dates. The date comparison narrows the investigation; it is not proof that a particular edit caused the change.
2. Use Performance (Search results) to locate the movement
Google Search Central describes this report as showing “important metrics about how your site performs in Google Search results.” It is the primary report for measuring visibility and average-position changes over time.
Turn on all four metrics

| Average position | What was the property’s aggregate position for recorded impressions? | A decline indicates lower reported visibility for the selected scope, but it is not one fixed rank seen by every searcher. |
Google notes that results vary by time, place, device, and recent search history. Average position is therefore an aggregate reporting measure, not a promise that every user saw the same numbered result.
Break the data down by query and page
- Open Performance and choose Search results.
- Select the comparison date ranges and the relevant search type.
- Enable Clicks, Impressions, Average CTR, and Average position.
- Open the Queries tab to find searches whose impressions, clicks, CTR, or position changed.
- Open the Pages tab to identify URLs or page groups that lost visibility.
- Select the position metric and sort by Difference where available, so substantial changes against the comparison period rise to the top.
Site totals can hide a problem affecting only one template, directory, query class, country, or device. Start with queries and pages, then add country, device, search appearance, or other filters that match the suspected pattern.

Read metric combinations, not isolated numbers
- Impressions down and average position down: the selected queries or pages have less reported visibility. Investigate indexing, page changes, search intent, and competing results.
- Impressions similar but CTR down: the pages may still be shown while users choose other results. Examine the query mix and how the result is presented.
- Clicks down while impressions and CTR are steady: check whether the comparison uses the same scope and search type; small changes can also be rounding or aggregation effects.
- Average position down with a changed query mix: the aggregate may have shifted because new lower-position impressions were added, even if important queries did not move.
These combinations are diagnostic clues, not causal proof. Performance reports describe the recorded outcome, not the reason Google produced it.
Understand chart and table differences
The chart is aggregated by property, while table aggregation depends on the selected dimension. Pages and Search appearance are aggregated by page. A chart and table that do not add up exactly can therefore reflect different aggregation rules rather than a tracking failure.
3. Check Page Indexing for site-level availability
Open Indexing > Pages (the Page Indexing report) and compare the trend in indexed pages with non-indexed URLs, warnings, and errors. The report covers URLs Google knows about and groups excluded URLs by the reason Google reported.

A sudden fall in indexed pages occurring with the Performance loss is a strong reason to investigate crawl or indexability. Review whether non-indexed URLs increased at the same time and whether the affected group corresponds to the pages that lost impressions.

Investigate the reason, not just the count
“Not indexed” is not automatically an error. Some exclusions are intentional. Open each relevant reason and examine representative examples for access restrictions, accidental noindex directives, robots rules, server failures, redirects, duplicate handling, or template-level changes. A template problem can remove visibility from many URLs at once.
Page Indexing is a trend and group-level view. It will not tell you the complete ranking story for one URL, and an indexed page is not guaranteed to appear for a particular search.
4. Inspect representative URLs individually
Use URL Inspection on a page that lost visibility, a page that remained stable, and—when relevant—a newly published or recently edited page. Comparing examples prevents a sitewide conclusion based on one unusual URL.

The inspection result shows whether Google has data for the URL and reports details such as:

- whether the URL is in Google’s index;
- whether crawling and indexing are permitted;
- whether fetching succeeded;
- which canonical URL Google selected; and
- when Google last crawled the URL.
Run the live test carefully
The live test checks current accessibility and can reveal a present fetch or access problem. It is not a substitute for the indexed result: the live page may be accessible now even though Google’s stored version was unavailable during the loss. Conversely, an indexed or valid inspection result does not guarantee that the URL will appear in Search. URL Inspection also does not check every eligibility condition, including manual actions and policy issues.
Use the inspection findings to fix a specific URL or template, then allow Google to recrawl before judging whether visibility has recovered. Do not promise immediate reindexing.

Manual actions
Open Security & Manual Actions > Manual actions. Google may apply a manual action to part of a site or to the entire site. If one exists, the report describes the affected pattern and the reason pages may not be shown normally in results.

Resolve every listed issue, use the report’s review process to request reconsideration when the fix is complete, and monitor the affected patterns. A manual action is a sitewide-signal check; it does not explain an ordinary fluctuation that has no action listed.

Security issues
Open Security & Manual Actions > Security issues, especially when a site or a large section suddenly disappears. Hacking, malware, or deceptive content warnings can restrict how pages are shown. Treat an alert as a security incident, not merely as an SEO ranking adjustment.
Search Console messages
Review the message center for notices about manual actions and other events. Google says affected site owners are notified in the Manual Actions report and message center. Messages can supply timing or affected-pattern details that a performance chart cannot.
6. Compare the change across the right axes

7. Use external context without over-claiming causation
After identifying the affected queries and URLs, place the dates beside release notes, migrations, redirects, template edits, publishing changes, seasonal demand, major news, and competitor changes. A coincident site edit is a lead to test, not proof that the edit caused the loss. Google’s troubleshooting guidance cautions that several factors can occur together.
For example, if a template deployment and a fall in indexed pages occurred in the same week, inspect the template’s robots, canonical, and rendering behavior. If indexing is stable but impressions for one topic fell during a news cycle, investigate demand and query mix before rewriting pages. Keep the hypothesis tied to the scope and metric that actually moved.
8. A practical end-to-end diagnostic checklist
- Confirm the property includes the correct protocol and hostname.
- Choose equivalent comparison periods and note weekly or seasonal patterns.
- In Performance, compare clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position.
- Break the result down by queries and pages; add country, device, search appearance, or search type filters as needed.
- Sort by change to locate the largest query and URL movements.
- Check Page Indexing for a matching change in indexed and non-indexed URL groups.
- Inspect representative affected URLs for index status, crawl permission, fetch success, canonical selection, and last crawl.
- Run a live test when current accessibility is in doubt, while keeping indexed data as the historical reference.
- Review Manual actions, Security issues, and the message center for broad or policy-related losses.
- Compare the timing with migrations, edits, releases, demand shifts, news, and competitor activity.
- Fix the diagnosed technical or policy issue, allow time for recrawling, and continue the same period-over-period comparison.
What Search Console can—and cannot—establish
Performance establishes where recorded search visibility changed. Page Indexing and URL Inspection can show whether crawl, fetch, index, or canonical conditions plausibly explain that change. Manual actions and Security issues reveal important sitewide signals. None of these reports independently proves a ranking cause, guarantees a search appearance, or promises a recovery date.
The most reliable diagnosis is therefore a chain of matching evidence: the same pages or queries move in Performance, the relevant index or URL condition changes at the same time, and the timing fits a verified site, policy, or market event. When those links are absent, describe the result as a measured change with an open cause rather than labeling every traffic decline a ranking drop.
