Start with a screen lock, then review app permissions, lock-screen notifications, location sharing and theft protections. After those safeguards are in place, tune Pixel’s convenience controls—such as Lift to check phone or Extend Unlock—only where you accept the added exposure. Pixel menu names and available features vary by model, Android version and account, so use the Settings search box when a label does not match.
This order gives you a practical first-pass setup: protect the phone if it is lost, limit what apps and bystanders can see, make an informed location choice, and only then enable shortcuts that reduce friction.
1. Check Security and set a screen lock
Open Settings > Security & privacy (on some Pixels this is split into separate Security and Privacy sections). Review any recommendations shown at the top. Google groups several high-value checks here, including your screen lock, Google Play Protect, Find My Device or Find Hub, system security updates and the Google Account Security Checkup. The exact list depends on the device and software version.
Use a strong lock that you will actually use
Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Screen lock, or search Settings for Screen lock. A long PIN or password protects more data than a short, easy-to-guess code. Pattern, PIN, password and biometric options can be combined on supported models; biometrics are convenient, but the underlying PIN or password remains the fallback and is required after some restarts or security events.

Keeping Play Protect enabled helps Android scan apps for harmful behavior. Make sure Find My Device or Find Hub is configured before the phone goes missing, and install pending system updates. These controls work together: a screen lock protects local data, updates close known flaws, and a device-finding service gives you a chance to locate, secure or erase a lost phone.
2. Audit app access before changing convenience settings
Pixel provides two complementary views: the Privacy Dashboard shows recent access, while Permission manager lets you change permissions by category. Open Settings > Privacy > Privacy dashboard to see which apps recently used location, camera, microphone and other sensitive data. Tap a category, select an app and inspect the timing and permission state.
Make targeted changes in Permission manager
Open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager. Select a permission such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos and videos, or Notifications, then review the apps listed under allowed, not allowed and other available states. For location, an app may offer choices such as Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow, depending on the app and Android release.
- Keep an app’s access only if its function needs it. A navigation app may need location while you use it; a calculator generally does not.
- Prefer one-time or while-in-use access where it meets your needs.
- Revisit permissions after installing a new app, restoring a backup or receiving a major Android update.
Use the global camera and microphone switches
For a quick, device-wide pause, open Settings > Privacy and turn off Camera access or Microphone access. Quick Settings tiles may also expose these switches on supported Pixels. Turning a switch off can break calls, recording, voice assistants and other features until you turn it back on, so treat it as an intentional temporary block rather than a permanent replacement for app-level review.

When an app uses the camera or microphone, Android displays a status indicator. If an indicator appears unexpectedly, open the Privacy Dashboard to identify the app instead of guessing.
3. Hide private details on the lock screen
A screen lock does not prevent someone nearby from reading an unprotected notification preview. Go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen; some versions place the controls under Wallpaper & style > Lock screen or Notifications. Pixel offers choices for whether notifications appear, whether sensitive content is shown and whether the presentation is a compact view or a fuller list.
Choose the exposure that fits your surroundings
| Choice | Privacy effect | Convenience effect |
|---|---|---|
| Show all notification content | Message text, names and other details can be visible while the phone is locked. | You can triage messages without unlocking. |
| Hide sensitive content | The alert remains visible but private text and similar details are concealed. | You still know an app alerted you, but must unlock to read it. |
| Don’t show notifications | Lock-screen notification information is withheld from nearby viewers. | You must unlock or check another device to see alerts. |
If your phone is often on a desk, in a shared vehicle or around children or colleagues, hiding sensitive content is a balanced starting point. Also review whether notification icons, media controls and quick actions reveal more than you want. Test the result by locking the phone and sending yourself a message from another device.
4. Decide how Pixel should use location
Open Settings > Location. The main Use location switch controls whether apps and services can receive the device’s location. Location enables local search results, maps and navigation, weather, emergency functions and help finding a lost phone. Turning it off is a broad restriction: apps cannot receive device location, and features that depend on it may stop working or become less accurate.

Review location permission one app at a time
From Settings > Location > App location permissions (the wording varies), inspect each app’s access. Use while-in-use or one-time access when continuous background tracking is not necessary. An app can still have a legitimate reason to request background location—for example, a safety or tracking function—but grant it deliberately and check whether the feature works without it.
Choose whether to use Location Accuracy
Under Settings > Location > Location services, look for Location Accuracy. When enabled, Pixel can combine GPS with Wi-Fi, mobile networks and device sensors for faster, more precise results, especially indoors. Disabling it can reduce the precision or speed of navigation and local results while limiting the signals used to estimate location. There is no universal best setting: frequent navigation favors accuracy; a reader prioritizing reduced collection may accept slower or less precise results.
Understand Timeline separately
Google Maps Timeline is a separate Google Account control, not simply another switch for the phone’s current location. Google’s current help text says, “Timeline is off by default.” When enabled, Timeline can save precise device location to the device. Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture and choose Your timeline; use its settings to review whether Timeline is enabled, which account is involved and how saved visits are managed. Because Timeline storage behavior and menus can change, read the current explanation on your Pixel before enabling it.
Turning off the device Location switch does not answer the Timeline question, and changing Timeline does not necessarily disable every location use by apps. Treat current location permissions, the device-wide switch and historical Timeline storage as three separate decisions.

5. Tune lock-screen shortcuts with a clear trade-off
Pixel’s lock-screen gestures can save seconds, but each one makes information or actions available before a full unlock. Open Settings > System > Gestures or search Settings for the feature name. Depending on the model, you may see Tap to check phone, Lift to check phone, Wake screen for notifications and lock-screen shortcut choices.
Tap to check phone and Lift to check phone
These options wake the display when you tap it or pick up the phone. They do not necessarily unlock it, but they can reveal the clock, notification icons and any lock-screen content you allow. Enable them if you frequently check the time or alerts; disable one or both if the screen waking in public, in a pocket or on a nightstand exposes information you would rather keep dark.
Wake screen for notifications
With this enabled, incoming alerts wake the display. It is useful for seeing urgent notifications without touching the phone, but it increases the number of moments when lock-screen content is visible and can add screen-on time. Pair it with hidden sensitive content if you want the alert cue without readable message text.

Search Settings for Extend Unlock (older releases may call it Smart Lock). It can keep the phone unlocked in selected trusted situations, such as when it is on your body, at a trusted place or connected to a trusted device. Google says the phone can remain unlocked for up to four hours at a time. The risk is contextual: anyone who gains physical access during a trusted situation may be able to open apps and data without the normal lock screen.

Use only situations you can define narrowly. A trusted Bluetooth device in a private home is a different risk from a shared car, workplace or public location. If you need a stricter state temporarily, press and hold the power button, then choose Lockdown where supported. Lockdown disables Extend Unlock and other lock-screen conveniences until you unlock with your primary PIN, password or pattern.
6. Prepare the phone before theft or SIM loss
Do this while you still have the phone. Google recommends setting a SIM PIN to help prevent unauthorized use of the SIM in a lost or stolen device. The path varies by carrier and Android version; search Settings for SIM lock or open the mobile-network SIM settings for the active SIM.
Set the SIM PIN safely
- Ask your carrier which SIM PIN to use and whether it has a required default. Google notes that some carriers use publicly available default PINs.
- Enable SIM lock only after you know the correct PIN. Entering the wrong code repeatedly can require a carrier-provided PUK code or lock the SIM.
- Store the PIN and any PUK information securely, not in an unprotected note on the phone.
A SIM PIN protects the SIM, not every file on the phone. Keep the screen lock enabled as the primary device protection, and make sure your Google Account, device Location and Find My Device or Find Hub settings are ready in advance. Those prerequisites give you the best chance of locating, securing or remotely managing a missing Pixel.

A practical first-pass order
If you want to complete the review in one sitting, use this sequence:
- Install pending security updates and address recommendations in Security & privacy.
- Set or strengthen the screen lock, then verify Play Protect and Find My Device or Find Hub.
- Check Privacy Dashboard, remove unnecessary permissions in Permission manager and test the global camera and microphone switches.
- Hide sensitive lock-screen content if other people can see your phone.
- Review device Location, Location Accuracy, app-level location access and the separate Maps Timeline choice.
- Enable only the wake gestures and shortcuts that genuinely help you.
- Configure Extend Unlock narrowly—or leave it off—and learn where Lockdown is.
- Set a carrier-approved SIM PIN and keep recovery details available.
Repeat the review after a major Android update, when you install an app that requests sensitive access, or when your work, travel and household circumstances change. Privacy and convenience are not fixed settings; the safest configuration is the one whose exposure you understand and can quickly tighten when needed.
