The most effective Pixel controls are Smart storage for backed-up photos and videos, app-level download removal for movies and music, Google Maps’ offline-map manager, and Google Photos’ backup-folder and quality settings. They solve different problems: some free space on the phone, while others reduce growth in your Google Account storage.
Which setting fixes which kind of storage use?
Start by identifying where the space is being consumed. Pixel device storage holds local downloads, offline maps, app data, photos and videos. Google Account storage is shared by services such as Google Photos; changing a backup setting can slow account growth without deleting a local movie or map.

Turn on Pixel Smart storage
Pixel’s built-in Smart storage is the simplest automatic safeguard when the phone is nearly full. Pixel Help describes storage as the place where data such as music and photos are kept, and its Smart storage control removes backed-up photos and videos from the device when available space is almost exhausted.

- Tap Storage.
- Select Free up space.
- Tap the Menu icon, then Settings.
- Turn on Smart storage.
This setting targets local copies that already have a backup. It is not a general download manager: it will not remove a Google Maps region, a downloaded television episode, or music saved by another app. Because the trigger is “almost full” rather than a user-set percentage, use the manual controls below if you need space immediately or want to protect particular files.

Understand Files by Google Smart storage
Files by Google exposes a related control with a more specific documented rule. Open Files by Google > Menu > Settings > Smart storage. For the automatic photo-deletion feature, Google documents two conditions: the backed-up photos have been saved for 60 days, and device storage is below 25%. Google also limits this automatic deletion feature to Pixel users running Android S.
The Files control and the Pixel Settings control should not be treated as two independent cleaners for every file type. Both concern backed-up photos, while app media and offline data remain under the app that created them. Before enabling automatic deletion, verify that the photos show as backed up in Google Photos and that you are comfortable keeping the cloud copy while removing the on-device copy.

Remove downloaded movies, music and other app media
Downloads belong to the app that created them. A phone-wide storage screen can show their size, but deleting them normally requires that app’s own library or download settings.

- Open Google TV and go to Library.
- Find the downloaded video.
- Tap Downloaded.
- Choose Remove.
Removing the download frees device storage while leaving your library purchase or rental status unchanged. The video will no longer be available for offline playback until it is downloaded again.

YouTube Music downloads
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap your Profile photo.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Downloads and storage.
- Review and remove downloaded music from the available controls.
Use the same principle for other media apps: open the app’s library, downloads, or storage page rather than deleting random files from a file browser. Removing an app’s cache may reclaim temporary space, but it is different from deleting the downloaded media you deliberately saved.
Delete or relocate Google Maps offline files
Offline Maps are local files. Google Maps stores them on the device’s internal storage by default, and they remain until you delete or replace them. Maps may also update saved regions automatically, so an old map can continue consuming space even when you are not actively using it.

- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Select Offline maps.
- Tap a saved region to update or delete it, or use the menu for that map.
To control future behavior, open Offline maps > Settings. Review Download preferences and Auto-update offline maps. Disabling or changing automatic updates can prevent unnecessary refreshes, but an outdated map may contain older road or place information.
Use an SD card when the phone supports it
Google Maps Help states that offline maps use internal storage by default but can be downloaded to an SD card on supported devices. In the Offline maps settings, choose the SD card as the storage preference if that option appears. Maps requires you to download the map again after changing the storage location; existing internal-storage copies do not move automatically. If no SD-card option is shown, your Pixel or Android configuration does not support portable storage for Maps.

Stop Google Photos from backing up every device folder
Google Photos can add new folders automatically when broad backup selection is enabled. To inspect what is growing your account:
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture and open Photos settings.
- Tap Backup.
- Choose Manage storage to review recommended cleanup categories, including large photos and videos.
Manage which folders are uploaded from Backup > Back up device folders. Turn off folders that contain screenshots, messaging-app media, social-media downloads, recordings, or other content you do not need in the cloud. Pay particular attention to Back up all device folders: when enabled, newly created folders can be added to backup without a separate decision each time.
Turning off a folder affects future uploads. It does not automatically erase files already backed up, and it does not delete the local files in that folder. If account space is already consumed, use the cleanup categories in Manage storage and confirm what will be removed before accepting a deletion.

In Google Photos, open Photos settings > Backup > Photos & videos quality. The choices are Original quality and Storage saver.
- Original quality: keeps files at their original quality and counts that stored data toward Google Account storage.
- Storage saver: is the space-conscious choice and may compress or resize supported files. Google notes that some files are not compressible, so the result is not identical for every item.
This setting primarily controls cloud-storage growth. It does not remove downloaded movies, offline maps, or local photos, and it does not by itself reclaim phone storage. If both the phone and account are filling up, pair a quality or folder change with the appropriate local cleanup step.

Use this order when a Pixel reports low storage:
- Open Settings > Storage and identify whether photos, apps, downloads, or other files dominate the total.
- Enable Pixel Smart storage if you want backed-up photos and videos cleared automatically when space becomes scarce.
- Check Files by Google Smart storage only if its 60-day, below-25% rule and Pixel/Android S limitation fit your device and preferences.
- Open media apps such as Google TV and YouTube Music and remove downloads from their own download pages.
- Review Google Maps > profile picture > Offline maps; delete regions you no longer need and inspect auto-update behavior.
- In Google Photos, disable unnecessary device folders and use Manage storage for large backed-up items.
- If the remaining problem is Google Account capacity, switch future Photos backups to Storage saver rather than deleting local files indiscriminately.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Expecting Smart storage to delete every download: it is aimed at backed-up photos and videos, not app-owned media or Maps files.
- Deleting a local file to solve account usage: account storage is controlled by what has already been backed up; stop future folders and clean cloud content separately.
- Removing a Maps file without checking travel needs: deletion ends offline access for that region until you download it again.
- Changing Maps storage and assuming files moved: Google requires a fresh download after switching between internal storage and a supported SD card.
- Turning off a Photos folder and expecting old uploads to disappear: the switch governs future backup; previously uploaded items need a separate cleanup action.
- Relying on a nearly-full trigger: Pixel Smart storage acts when storage is almost full, so manual cleanup is the faster option when only a small amount of free space remains.
