For more natural-looking Pixel photos, start with the neutral Default Camera Look when your model offers Looks, keep brightness and color adjustments restrained, use 4:3 when you want the phone’s full image, and leave RAW + JPEG off unless you plan to edit. In dim scenes, use Night Sight with the phone and subject as still as possible. Clean the camera glass before changing settings: fingerprints and lens protectors can create blur, halos, lines, and odd color.
Pixel controls are not universal. Google currently identifies Camera Looks in its settings help for Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold; other models may not show that menu. Pro Controls, 50 MP capture, slider names, and menu locations also vary by model and Camera app version.
Check which controls your Pixel actually supports
Google’s Camera app combines computational processing with controls that differ between generations and editions. Before following a menu path, open the Camera app, tap the settings button, and look for the label described below. If a control is absent, it is usually a model or software limitation rather than a fault.

| Control | What it changes | Availability caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Looks | HDR photo rendering, from a neutral default to stylized treatments | Google’s current help names Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold |
| Brightness, shadows, color or exposure | How light and color are balanced before the photo is saved | Labels and adjustments depend on the model and Camera app version |
| Pro Controls | Manual focus, shutter speed, and ISO | Restricted to listed Pro phones; not a universal Pixel feature |
| 50 MP capture | Higher-resolution still images | Google limits it to listed Pro models; it is not required for a natural rendering |
Google’s device-specific guidance is in Change your Camera app settings and Take high quality photos on your Pixel phone or tablet. Use the wording shown on your own screen rather than assuming every Pixel has the same switches.

Set Camera Looks to the neutral default
A Look is a processing style, not a lens or resolution setting. The default Look is intended for ordinary HDR photos; other Looks are creative treatments that can alter contrast, color, highlights, or overall mood. If faces, skin tones, walls, or skies look too dramatic, the Look is the first setting to check.
- Open Camera.
- Tap the Settings or gear button. Depending on the app version, this may be at the top or inside the expanded controls.
- Open Looks if your Pixel displays that option.
- Choose Default for everyday photographs. Select a stylized Look only when you deliberately want that visual treatment.
Google’s current settings article lists this feature for the Pixel 11 family, so do not expect the same menu on an older Pixel. If your phone has no Looks control, leave its standard processing in place and work with exposure, composition, focus, and lighting instead.
Keep brightness, color, and exposure adjustments restrained
Pixel exposure automation is designed to produce a usable image quickly, but a scene with a bright window, reflective water, deep shadows, or a very dark subject can fool it. Natural photos usually retain some highlight detail and believable shadow rather than making every area equally bright.

Adjust the scene from the preview
- Point at the subject and tap the part that should look correctly exposed.
- Use the on-screen brightness or exposure control, if available, to make a small adjustment. Lower it when white clouds, lamps, or skin highlights are losing texture; raise it only enough to reveal important shadow detail.
- If your Pixel exposes separate shadow or color controls, change one at a time and compare the preview with the real scene. Avoid pushing shadows so far that noise and a gray, flat appearance become obvious.
- Recheck the brightest part of the frame before pressing the shutter. The right position depends on the scene, lens, and model, so a universal slider value would be misleading.
For a detailed explanation of the available exposure and color controls, see Google’s high-quality photo guidance. The goal is not to remove all contrast; it is to prevent the phone from clipping important highlights or lifting every shadow unnaturally.
Lock focus and exposure when the subject or lighting is difficult
Tap and hold the subject, or use the focus-and-exposure lock shown by your Camera app, when recomposing would otherwise make the brightness jump. This is useful for a person standing near a window or a small object against a bright background. Unlock or retap when the subject distance or lighting changes.
Use Pro Controls only when you need manual control
On supported Pro models, Pro Controls expose manual focus, shutter speed, and ISO. Manual focus can help with a close subject behind glass; a faster shutter can reduce motion blur; and a lower ISO can reduce noise when the phone is stable. These controls also make a poor setting easy to keep, so return to automatic capture for ordinary snapshots. Google restricts Pro Controls to listed Pro phones; the exact availability is documented in its device feature notes.

Choose 4:3 or 16:9 for composition, not for a processing effect
Aspect ratio changes the frame you save. It does not make the camera less computational or automatically more natural.
| Option | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full image (4:3) | You want the sensor’s full frame, maximum flexibility for later cropping, or a conventional photo print | The picture is less wide on a phone screen than 16:9 |
| Wide crop (16:9) | You are composing specifically for a widescreen display, presentation, or video-style layout | It crops the top and bottom of the 4:3 frame; those pixels cannot be recovered later |
Open the Camera settings or the ratio control in the viewfinder and select 4:3 when preserving the full image matters. Choose 16:9 intentionally when the wide shape is part of the composition. Google documents both choices in Change your Camera app settings.
Gridlines are a composition aid rather than an image-quality filter. Turn them on if they help you keep horizons, door frames, and architecture straight; turn them off if they distract you. They do not appear in the saved photograph.

Decide whether RAW + JPEG belongs in your workflow
RAW does not automatically look more natural. It is an additional, less-processed capture intended to preserve editing latitude, while the paired JPEG is the convenient finished version produced by the phone.
| Choice | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG only | Sharing immediately, conserving storage, and making no substantial edits | One ready-to-use file with Pixel processing already applied |
| RAW + JPEG | Adjusting white balance, highlights, shadows, or color later | Two files per shot, more storage, and an editing or file-management step |
- Open Camera settings.
- Find the image or advanced capture section and enable RAW/JPEG or the equivalent switch if your model provides it.
- Take a test photo and open Google Photos or your file browser to confirm that both the JPEG and RAW file are being saved.
- Keep the JPEG for quick sharing and edit the RAW only when the extra control is worth the larger workflow.
Google explains how paired files are stored and viewed in its Pixel photo-editing help. Turn RAW + JPEG back off for routine snapshots if storage or sorting becomes inconvenient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Night Sight and stability for low-light scenes
In a dark room or outdoors at night, Night Sight can produce a more balanced result than adding direct flash. It relies on a longer computational capture, so movement is the main cause of soft or ghosted subjects.
Best Value
- Rotatable twist with 1/4"screw allows 360° adjustment and 180° flipping, so you can take photos, video call or live broadcast with ease
- Universal compatibility with smartphones up to 3.7 inches wide, GoPros, digital cameras and webcams
- Includes a wireless remote with a range of 30 feet (without obstacle), so you can easily take individual, group and wide-angle shots
- Swaps easily between handheld selfie stick and stand-alone tripod for dual-purpose use
- Whether you're an amateur, enthusiast or professional, this is a must-have accesory for shooting on the go
- Frame the scene and select Night Sight when it appears automatically or from the camera mode controls.
- Hold the phone with both hands and keep it still throughout the countdown.
- Ask people to pause, or photograph a stationary subject. Moving leaves, pets, and people can still blur even when the phone itself is steady.
- Set the phone on a tripod or a stable stationary surface when possible. A free shelf, table, or wall brace works just as well as a dedicated holder.
- Review the result before moving. If it is still blurred, improve stability or add gentle natural or indirect light rather than repeatedly increasing brightness.
Google’s low-light instructions are at Take photos in low light or at night. They emphasize keeping both camera and subject still and using a tripod or stable surface where possible.
Choose between flash and Night Sight deliberately
| Situation | Better starting point | Reason and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Stationary scene, dim light | Night Sight with support | Allows a steadier computational exposure without direct glare; requires time and stillness |
| Moving subject that cannot pause | Available ambient light or carefully used flash | A shorter capture may reduce motion blur, but direct flash can look harsh |
| Flash creates rings, halos, or reflections | Turn flash off and use natural or indirect light | Google specifically recommends this when flash artifacts appear |
Do not treat flash as a universal fix. If a protective case, glass cover, or nearby reflective surface is causing halos, changing lighting and removing the obstruction is more effective than raising exposure.
Clean the lens before troubleshooting color or sharpness
A fingerprint or partially covered camera can mimic aggressive processing. It can produce a soft image, bright halos around lights, lines, or color distortions, especially at night.
- Remove any case edge, camera-film protector, or other accessory that overlaps the camera glass.
- Gently wipe the camera glass with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
- Take another photo of a detailed subject in ordinary light before changing more settings.
- If artifacts remain across multiple lenses and lighting conditions, restart the Camera app and check for an available system or Camera app update; persistent faults may require Google support.
These cleaning and obstruction checks come from Google’s photo and video quality troubleshooting.
A practical setup for common shooting situations
| Scenario | Recommended starting setup | One adjustment to make |
|---|---|---|
| People and everyday daylight | Default Look if available, 4:3, automatic exposure | Tap the face or subject and lower exposure slightly if bright skin or sky clips |
| Architecture or landscapes | 4:3, gridlines on if useful, stable stance | Check the horizon and protect bright clouds from clipping |
| Creative, intentionally stylized image | Choose a non-default Look only when its color and contrast are wanted | Compare the preview with the unstyled default before committing |
| Night street or indoor scene | Night Sight, flash off if it causes glare, phone supported | Keep people and camera still; use indirect light if available |
| Photo you will edit seriously | RAW + JPEG, 4:3, stable framing | Keep the JPEG for quick use and edit the RAW selectively |
Settings to avoid changing blindly
- Do not force 16:9 simply because it fills the screen; it is a crop and may remove useful framing.
- Do not leave a creative Look enabled by accident if you are trying to reproduce ordinary colors across a set of photos.
- Do not push exposure or shadows to a fixed value for every scene. A setting that helps a backlit portrait can ruin a bright landscape.
- Do not enable RAW for every snapshot unless you have a plan for the extra files and editing time.
- Do not assume Pro Controls or 50 MP capture exist on your Pixel. Google limits those features to specified models, and labels can change with software updates.
The most reliable natural-looking baseline is therefore simple: use the neutral default processing available on your model, preserve the 4:3 frame, make only small exposure corrections, focus deliberately, and reserve RAW, creative Looks, and manual controls for situations that justify their extra complexity.
