If you previously used Fitbit, review five separate areas in Google Health: feature privacy controls, social sharing, connected services and permissions, notification routes, and historical-data export or deletion. Turn off anything you no longer want, but remember that disabling a feature does not erase data collected while it was enabled. Export or delete that history separately.
Google’s official privacy FAQ was updated May 19, 2026, and Google’s menu labels can vary by app version, device, operating system, region, and account. The paths below reflect Google’s documented controls available at that time.
Start with the settings that affect the most data
These controls do different jobs, so changing one does not automatically change the others. Use this map before opening the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Area | Where to find it | What changing it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feature privacy | Profile picture or initial > Your data in Google Health > Manage feature privacy controls | Stops selected Google Health features from using data going forward, according to each control | Does not remove information already stored |
| Social sharing | Google Health settings > Social > Sharing preferences | Controls leaderboard sharing such as Steps and Cardio load | Does not necessarily remove existing friends or connected-service access |
| Fitbit device alerts | Connections > paired device > Notifications | Chooses which phone alerts can be relayed to the paired device | Does not control Google Health app push messages or marketing email |
| Google Health push | Profile picture or initial > Google Health settings > Push notifications | Controls notifications generated by the Google Health app | Does not change alerts sent from the phone to a wearable |
| Historical data | Your data in Google Health > Deletion options, or Google’s export workflow | Exports or removes stored data by type and time range | Is separate from switching off a feature |
Google states that Google Health and wellness data is not used for Google Ads and is kept separate from Google Ads data. That statement does not mean that connected apps, paired devices, friends, or Google Health features stop processing information automatically; those relationships have their own controls.

Think of the settings as a set of separate doors. A feature switch governs a particular Google Health capability, a leaderboard switch governs what friends see, and a connection permission governs a source or destination for data. Closing one door does not close the others.
Review Google Health feature privacy controls
Feature controls are the first place to look if you want to reduce what Google Health does with health information. Open the Google Health app and go to Profile picture or initial > Your data in Google Health > Manage feature privacy controls. The controls shown are account- and service-dependent, so your list may not match another user’s.
Controls that may appear
- Irregular rhythm notifications
- ECG
- Cycle health
- Advanced AI personalized insights
- Medical-record sync
- Health Connect sync
- Google Health Coach
Read the description beside each switch and turn off only the features you no longer want. A control may be unavailable if the feature is not supported for your device, account, region, or current service configuration. Do not assume that an absent switch means the feature is active; availability itself varies.
Turning a feature off is not deletion
Disabling a feature changes its future use of data under that feature’s setting. It does not delete information collected while the feature was active. To remove prior information, open Your data in Google Health > Deletion options, choose the relevant data type, and select a time scope. Google documents options for deleting today’s data, all data of a type, or a custom date range.
For example, turning off ECG stops future ECG-related feature use, but it does not erase earlier ECG records. Treat the switch and the deletion request as two separate actions. If you want to retain a record for a clinician or your own files, export it before deleting it.
Check data sources and permissions
Google says health information can come from paired devices, manual entries, connected services, Health Connect or Apple Health, third-party apps, and, in some cases, medical providers. Review which sources are still connected. A forgotten integration can continue supplying information even after you stop using its app. Remove or revoke sources you no longer recognize, then check whether the source has its own account-level deletion control.

If you granted location access, Google may collect precise geolocation for selected features. Remove that access in Google Health’s device controls or in your phone’s app-permission settings when location is not needed. Removing location permission can affect features that depend on it, so check the feature description and test the app afterward.

Leaderboard sharing is separate from feature privacy. Go to Google Health settings > Social > Sharing preferences. Turn off Steps and/or Cardio load on the leaderboard if you do not want friends to see those metrics.
Google’s privacy FAQ says that establishing a friend connection shares your Google Account name, profile picture, and email address. Step count and cardio load are shared on friend leaderboards unless you change the applicable privacy preferences.
Do two checks, not one
- Change the leaderboard switches for the metrics you do not want displayed.
- Review your existing friend connections and remove connections you no longer recognize or need.
- Open the connected-services area and revoke integrations that should no longer receive or provide health data.
Changing leaderboard visibility does not necessarily revoke a third-party service’s access, and removing a service does not automatically change what friends can see in a leaderboard. Handle each relationship independently. Also remember that changing a sharing preference is not the same as deleting historical leaderboard or account data; use the deletion controls for stored history.
Separate the three notification systems
Former Fitbit users often look for one master notification switch, but Google documents three distinct routes: phone alerts relayed to a Fitbit device, notifications generated by the Google Health app, and promotional email.

This route requires permission in more than one place. The phone must allow notifications for the underlying app, and Android Focus or Do Not Disturb can suppress them. The wearable’s own Do Not Disturb or sleep mode can also block alerts even when the phone is configured correctly. A notification allowed in Google Health can therefore still be silenced by an operating-system or device mode.
2. Google Health app push notifications
For alerts created by the Google Health app itself, go to Profile picture or initial > Google Health settings > Push notifications. Review each item and disable messages you do not want. These switches do not control calls, texts, or other phone notifications being relayed to a paired device.
3. Promotional email
Promotional email is controlled separately. Google’s privacy FAQ says you can change the preference in Google Health app settings or use the unsubscribe link in a message. Unsubscribing from promotional email does not disable device alerts or in-app push notifications. If more than one Google Account is signed in, confirm that you changed the preference for the account receiving the messages.
Notification troubleshooting order
- If a device alert is missing, first check the app’s notification permission on the phone.
- Then check the Google Health device-notification categories.
- Finally check Android Focus or Do Not Disturb and the wearable’s own sleep or Do Not Disturb mode.
- If only Google Health messages are unwanted, change the app’s Push notifications settings instead of device-alert settings.
- If alerts work for one app but not another, compare the individual app permissions rather than resetting every notification category.
Export a copy before deleting anything
If you may change accounts, close an old setup, or need medical or fitness history later, export first. Google’s export instructions tell you to download your Google data and make sure Google Health is selected. Large archives can take a few days to prepare, so do not wait until the moment you need a record.
Google’s export help also documents a legacy Fitbit-login archive path for people who had not migrated. That documentation does not establish that every legacy account remains accessible now, so do not assume an old Fitbit login will still work. Use the current Google Account route where available and keep the downloaded archive in a location you can access without the original app.
Delete only the history you intend to remove
Use Your data in Google Health > Deletion options to select a data type and scope. The documented scopes include today, all data of a type, and a custom range. Check the selected category and dates carefully before confirming; deleting a narrow range is different from deleting all history.

Turning off an individual feature, deleting a data category, and deleting an account are different actions. Google states that data is not available for deleted accounts, so preserve an export before an account deletion if you may need the records. A feature switch should not be treated as a substitute for an account-level deletion request.
Understand the Fitbit-to-Google account transition
Google’s privacy FAQ says Fitbit-account users could no longer access Fitbit with a Fitbit account after May 19, 2026; moving to a Google Account was required to continue using the service. Google also said it would begin processing data deletions for accounts that were not moved on July 15, 2026.
Both dates have passed. They are historical transition context, not upcoming deadlines. If your account was never moved, do not rely on a legacy login continuing to work. Use Google’s current account and export guidance, including the official Google Health privacy FAQs and Google Health export instructions, to determine what access remains. If you did migrate, verify that the Google Account shown in the app is the one that contains your historical data before changing settings or requesting deletion.

Frequently Asked Questions
If I turn off a Google Health feature, does Google delete the data it already collected?
No. Turning off a feature changes its future use under that control. Previously stored information remains unless you separately use Your data in Google Health > Deletion options and choose the relevant type and time range.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are Fitbit device alerts and Google Health push notifications the same thing?
No. Device alerts are configured under Connections > paired device > Notifications and relay phone alerts such as calls, texts, calendar events, email, and other app notifications. Google Health-generated push messages have their own controls under Google Health settings > Push notifications.

How do I stop friends from seeing my Fitbit activity?
Open Google Health settings > Social > Sharing preferences and disable Steps and/or Cardio load on the leaderboard. Then review existing friend connections separately, because changing leaderboard visibility does not necessarily remove a connection or revoke a connected service.
Does Google Health use my wellness data for Google Ads?
Google states that Google Health and wellness data is not used for Google Ads and is kept separate from Google Ads data. That statement does not disable feature processing, connected-service access, device syncing, or social sharing, which each have separate controls.
Can I still use an old Fitbit login to retrieve my data?
Do not assume so. Google says Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026, for users who needed to move to a Google Account. Use the current Google Account and official export instructions; legacy archive guidance may not mean every old account remains accessible.
How long can a Google Health export take?
Google says large archives may take a few days to prepare. Start the export before deleting data, changing accounts, or closing an old setup if you may need the history later.
The Bottom Line
Former Fitbit users should review feature privacy, social sharing, connected services, location access, and each notification channel separately. Disable unwanted features and sharing, export records you may need, and use deletion controls when you actually want historical data removed. A feature switch is not a deletion request, and no single notification switch covers device alerts, Google Health push messages, and promotional email.
