Looking for alternatives to Google Drive? For everyday file sharing, compare Dropbox for syncing and recovery, Sync.com for link controls and shared folders, and Proton Drive for end-to-end encryption. The right choice depends on whether you mostly send download links, collaborate in shared folders, keep files synchronized across devices, or need stronger privacy controls.
These services can replace cloud storage and sharing, but they should not automatically be treated as full replacements for Google Drive’s Docs, Sheets, and Slides workflow. Google’s integration with those apps and real-time collaboration remains an important baseline when document co-editing is central to your work. Google describes Drive’s integration with its productivity apps.
What should you compare before switching?
Start with the job you need the service to do. A link for a one-time download has different requirements from a shared folder used by a team or a working document edited by several people. Compare these practical factors:
- Recipient friction: Can recipients open the link and use the file with the devices and apps they already have? Product feature pages describe access and sharing options, but they do not establish which service recipients will find easiest. Test a representative link with the people who will use it.
- Collaboration: Decide whether you need co-editing, comments, shared folders, or simply a dependable download link. Sync.com documents shared folders, file comments, and Office 365 support, but those features do not by themselves reproduce Google’s Docs, Sheets, and Slides workflow. Sync.com’s plan page lists its capabilities; Google’s app integration is described on its Drive page.
- Privacy and link controls: Check for end-to-end encryption, passwords, expiration dates, preview-only access, and restrictions on who can open or download a file. The available controls differ by service.
- Sync and recovery: If files need to stay current across devices, look at selective sync, online-only files, offline access, version history, and deleted-file recovery. Confirm the recovery window for the plan you would use.
- Storage and cost: Compare the capacity you need, billing period, number of household or team seats, and any plan-specific limits. Plans and prices can change, so check the providers’ current pages before choosing.
How do the main alternatives differ?
| Service | Best fit | Documented features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dropbox | Keeping files synced across devices and recovering earlier versions | Online-only files, selective sync, access to synced files across devices, and recovery of earlier versions. Dropbox sync features. | Dropbox lists different recovery periods by plan. Check the current plan details rather than assuming one recovery window applies to every account. Dropbox plans. |
| Sync.com | Sharing folders and controlling how recipients access links | Its plan page lists password-protected sharing, access restrictions, shared folders, file history, and preview-only links for supported document and image formats. Sync.com plans. | Microsoft Office editing depends on an Office 365 license. Sync.com’s own comparisons with Google are vendor-authored, not independent evaluations. Sync.com’s comparison page. |
| Proton Drive | Privacy-focused storage and sharing | Proton says Drive uses end-to-end encryption and supports passwords or expiration dates on sharing links. It also offers a free plan. Proton Drive and Proton’s file-sharing details. | Encryption and link controls are its clearest documented distinction here; do not assume it duplicates every Google Docs collaboration feature. Check plan limits and recipient access before using it for a team. |
Choose Dropbox for device sync and recovery
Dropbox is a practical candidate when the same files need to be available on multiple devices and you want to manage local storage. Its documented options include keeping files online-only and choosing which folders sync to a device. It also describes recovery of earlier versions, with the available period varying by plan. Review the current sync feature details and plan terms against your devices and recovery needs.

This is a file-sync and recovery fit, not a reason to assume Dropbox is universally better at sharing. Check whether the link permissions and recipient experience you need are available on the plan you intend to use.
Choose Sync.com for shared folders and link restrictions
Sync.com is worth considering when you regularly share folders or want options such as password-protected links and preview-only access for supported formats. Its plan page also lists file history and comments. Confirm which controls apply to the files and formats you share, and whether recipients need editing or only viewing access. See Sync.com’s listed plan features.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
If Microsoft Office editing is part of the workflow, Sync.com says it depends on an Office 365 license. That is a separate requirement from having a shared folder or a file-sharing link. The provider’s Google Drive comparison is its own account of the products, not an independent assessment.

Choose Proton Drive when privacy is the priority
Proton says Proton Drive uses end-to-end encryption and allows sharing links to have a password or an expiration date. Those controls can matter when a link should not remain open indefinitely or should require an additional credential. See Proton Drive’s product details and its explanation of sharing files.

- Capacity Display Variance: 250GB external ssd often appears as around 232GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 250 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Those features do not establish that Proton Drive recreates every part of Google’s collaborative editing workflow. Before adopting it for a team, verify current plan limits and try the recipient’s actual path for opening and working with shared files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is Google Drive still the better fit?
If your everyday work depends on shared Docs, Sheets, or Slides and real-time co-editing, Google Drive’s integration with those applications is a substantial advantage. A service that stores files and produces share links may handle delivery well without being a like-for-like replacement for that editing environment. Keep Google Drive in the comparison if collaborators need to edit documents together rather than just exchange files. Google’s Drive overview.

A practical way to make the choice
- Write down the main task. Identify whether you mostly send links, work from shared folders, sync across devices, recover old versions, or co-edit documents.
- Match the task to documented features. Start with Dropbox for sync and recovery, Sync.com for folder and link controls, or Proton Drive for end-to-end encryption and protected links. Keep Google Drive under consideration if Google-app co-editing is essential.
- Check the exact plan. Confirm storage, recovery periods, link controls, user or seat limits, and any required software license on the provider’s current plan page.
- Test the recipient workflow. Share a non-sensitive sample file with someone who uses the devices and apps your real recipients use. Check opening, previewing, downloading, and editing as applicable.
- Make the decision against your real use. Choose the service that satisfies your must-have controls and collaboration needs at a current plan and cost you can accept; do not decide from a feature label alone.
