The best gaming router for low latency is the one that fixes the delay your home network is actually adding. For the most reliable local connection, plug a gaming PC or console into the router with Ethernet. A router upgrade is most useful when Wi-Fi is unstable or household traffic is creating congestion; it cannot shorten the route to a game server or repair an ISP routing problem.
What a gaming router can—and cannot—do for ping
Your in-game ping reflects more than the router: it includes the connection from your device through your home network and ISP to the game server, as well as server-side conditions. A router cannot control the distance to that server, ISP peering or routing, server load, or game netcode.
RTINGS reports virtually no router-level latency and jitter in its wired tests compared with its Wi-Fi tests. That is a result of its testing, not a guarantee for every home or device. Its testing also found router-level latency problems difficult to create unless the internet bottleneck was saturated. A faster router by itself does not change the route to a remote server. RTINGS’ router-latency testing
These distinctions matter when choosing equipment: peak Wi-Fi throughput is not a gaming latency score. High advertised rates can help with large transfers and multiple clients, but do not establish lower ping.

Gaming router picks to consider
RTINGS’ 2026 recommendations provide two independently reviewed comparison points. They are not proof that either router will reduce ping in every household; match the features to your connection, play location, and wired setup.

How to choose for your home
Start with the connection to your gaming device
If you can run a cable, use Ethernet between the router and the PC or console. It avoids the Wi-Fi link, which is often the source of local variation. If a cable is impractical, evaluate wireless stability at the actual play location rather than relying on a router’s maximum advertised rate.

Check whether congestion is the real problem
If lag spikes occur when someone streams video, downloads files, or joins a call, the internet connection may be saturated and packets may wait in queues. QoS can prioritize selected devices or applications; congestion-control or SQM features aim to manage queueing at the bottleneck. They help only when contention is present, and settings and names differ by model and firmware.

NETGEAR’s XR1000 page claims up to 93% ping reduction in a specific congested setup: DumaOS with QoS enabled, a PS4, a 100Mbps down/20Mbps up connection, and competing Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, BitTorrent, and HD video traffic. NETGEAR describes 275ms congested ping versus a 49ms non-congested reference. This manufacturer claim is conditional, not a general result to expect from a router upgrade. Match ports and WAN capacity to your equipment
Count the wired devices you want to connect and check their port speeds, along with the router’s WAN speed against your internet plan. The Archer BE550 offers five 2.5Gbps ports; the GS-BE18000 offers eight. A router with multi-gig ports is useful when your internet service or local wired devices can use them, but port speed alone does not determine game ping.
Consider coverage and obstacles at the play location
Walls and distance can weaken Wi-Fi even when a router performs well nearby. If coverage is the issue, consider better access-point placement or a compatible mesh system, but do not assume a mesh node will improve latency. RTINGS removed its mesh gaming category in an August 2026 update, saying these systems generally introduce more latency than a standalone router. RTINGS’ gaming-router recommendations

- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
Account for client compatibility and setup effort
A Wi-Fi 7 router’s newer capabilities matter only if the client devices can use them; older clients remain limited by their own supported standards. Also consider how much configuration you are willing to manage: device priority, application rules, and congestion controls can require tuning, and their exact behavior depends on the model and firmware.
What QoS and bufferbloat features actually mean
QoS (Quality of Service) lets a router give selected devices or applications priority when traffic competes. NETGEAR says its Pro Gaming QoS allocates a percentage of bandwidth to selected devices. Its DumaOS 3.0 adds application-level QoS and Congestion Control, which the company says are intended to prevent congestion and queueing delays.

Bufferbloat is excessive packet buffering that can add delay and jitter when a connection is busy. That explanation and the described feature behavior come from NETGEAR; feature names and operation vary across router models and firmware. These controls do not make a quiet connection inherently faster, nor do they fix a poor route beyond the home network.
Set up the router to reduce avoidable delay
- Connect the gaming device by Ethernet where practical, then test play at the usual time and with normal household usage.
- Check for congestion. Note whether latency spikes coincide with downloads, streams, or other heavy use. If they do, try the router’s QoS or congestion-control controls, following the model-specific instructions.
- Place the router or access point for the play area if you must use Wi-Fi. Recheck stability where the console or PC sits, not only beside the router.
- Compare results under the same conditions. Keep the game, device, server region, and household activity consistent; otherwise a change in ping may come from factors outside the router.
When a router upgrade is unlikely to help
- Your connection is already wired and stable, with no congestion-related spikes.
- Ping is high because the game server is distant or the ISP takes a poor route.
- The game server is overloaded or the game itself has networking issues.
- You are choosing a router only for a large advertised Wi-Fi speed number, without evidence that Wi-Fi throughput is the bottleneck.
For a broader buying context, NETGEAR’s 2026 guide puts it this way: “A fast internet plan cannot fix every lag spike.” That is a manufacturer statement, not independent test evidence. NETGEAR’s 2026 gaming-router guide
