For console gaming, start with the monitor’s HDMI capabilities at the resolution and refresh rate you actually plan to use. Then verify that your console and that monitor support VRR and HDR together in the same signal mode. A high refresh-rate badge or HDMI 2.1 label by itself does not guarantee the combination you want.

What should you look for in a gaming monitor for PS5 or Xbox?

Use this order when comparing monitors: confirm the HDMI signal your console can send, check the image features that work with that signal, then compare responsiveness, screen size, and ergonomics. A monitor’s maximum refresh rate may apply to DisplayPort or a PC rather than its HDMI input.

Feature Why it matters What to verify
Resolution Sets image detail and affects how the console’s output fits the display. Native resolution, console output support, scaling, and viewing distance.
Refresh rate Sets the display refresh modes available for compatible console signals and games. The refresh rate supported over the specific HDMI input at your chosen resolution.
VRR Can synchronize the display refresh with variable console output and reduce tearing. Supported VRR format and whether it works with your console at the target resolution and refresh rate.
HDR Enables supported high-dynamic-range image output, but compatibility depends on the signal and implementation. Whether HDR works at your intended resolution and refresh rate, not just whether the monitor has an HDR label.
Input lag and motion Influence perceived responsiveness and motion clarity. Independent, model-specific input-lag and motion measurements; there is no universal threshold established here.
Aspect ratio Determines whether the console image fills the screen. A standard 16:9 screen is the straightforward match; consoles do not support ultrawide gaming output.
ALLM Can switch a display automatically to a low-latency mode when signaled by a console. ALLM support in the monitor’s own specifications or manual; HDMI 2.1 alone does not establish it.

For model-specific checks, RTINGS’ console-compatibility testing treats supported signal combinations separately rather than inferring compatibility from a single product label.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 for 120 Hz?

Not for every 120 Hz setup: the important question is whether the monitor’s HDMI input supports 120 Hz at the resolution you want. For PS5, Sony documents 4K/120 Hz output and identifies display support, the appropriate input, firmware, settings, and cable as possible requirements when that mode is unavailable. Check the monitor’s detailed specifications or manual rather than relying on its headline refresh rate.

If PS5 does not show the expected signal or falls back to 1080p/120 Hz, follow Sony’s PS5 resolution troubleshooting guidance: confirm the display supports the mode, connect to the capable HDMI port, update display firmware, use the included cable or a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz, and check the console’s output settings.

Is 1440p or 4K better for console gaming?

Neither is universally better. A 4K monitor is the choice to consider when you prioritize resolution and want to use PS5’s documented 4K output modes. QHD (2560×1440) can make sense for a desk-focused setup or when screen size, viewing distance, space, or price weighs more heavily than native 4K. Check the console’s output support and how the monitor scales the signal before choosing.

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

Sony’s announced PlayStation 27-inch monitor illustrates the distinction: its announcement specifies QHD, IPS, HDR with Auto HDR Tone Mapping, and refresh up to 120 Hz for PS5 and PS5 Pro. Sony said launch was planned for 2026 in the U.S. and Japan; the announcement does not establish current availability. The same announcement lists 240 Hz for compatible PCs and Macs, underscoring why a monitor’s maximum refresh figure may not apply to console HDMI use. See the PlayStation announcement for its stated features and launch plans.

Does VRR work with my monitor on Xbox or PS5?

VRR compatibility depends on the console, monitor, and signal mode—not just the monitor’s marketing label. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support HDMI Forum VRR; Xbox additionally supports FreeSync. Verify the specific format and whether it works at your intended resolution and refresh rate. RTINGS notes that compatibility can differ between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so do not assume one console’s result applies to the other.

Does HDR work at every resolution and refresh rate?

No. HDR availability can depend on the console signal mode and monitor implementation. RTINGS notes that Xbox Series X|S HDR is available only with 4K signals. If you plan to play at a different resolution or refresh rate, check that exact combination instead of treating an HDR label as proof that HDR will be available in every mode.

Is ALLM worth prioritizing?

ALLM is useful when you want a console to trigger the display’s low-latency mode automatically, but it is optional on many monitors. Sony explains that PS5 requires current system software and a display that supports ALLM; PS5 does not send the ALLM signal while a media app is running. Sony also cautions that not every HDMI 2.1 display supports ALLM. Check the monitor documentation directly, and see Sony’s explanation of Auto Low Latency Mode.

Will a PS5 or Xbox work on an ultrawide monitor?

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S lack ultrawide gaming output, according to RTINGS. The console image therefore does not fill an ultrawide screen and black bars appear at the sides. If filling the display is important, a standard 16:9 monitor is the simpler fit.

How to check a monitor before buying

  1. Choose your target signal. Decide the resolution and refresh rate you want to use, such as PS5 at 4K/120 Hz or a QHD desk setup.
  2. Inspect the exact HDMI input. Find the detailed specification or manual and confirm that port supports your target resolution and refresh rate. Do not substitute a DisplayPort maximum for HDMI capability.
  3. Check features at that signal. Confirm VRR and HDR support with your console and target mode; check ALLM separately if you want automatic low-latency switching.
  4. Compare measured performance. Look for independent, model-specific input-lag and motion tests, then consider image characteristics, screen size, and ergonomics.
  5. Set up the console connection. For a PS5 4K/120 Hz setup, use the monitor’s capable HDMI input, an adequate cable, current display firmware, and the relevant console output settings.

The Sony SDM-U27M90 specifications are one example of why exact inputs matter: Sony lists 3840×2160 resolution, an HDMI refresh range of 24–120 Hz, two HDMI 2.1 ports, HDMI VRR, and ALLM. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements.
