For better Fire TV privacy, review the separate controls for Device Usage Data, App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads; Fire TV Smart TV owners can also review Over-the-air Viewing Data. For picture problems, don’t apply a universal “best settings” recipe: Amazon’s specific guidance is to check format and cable compatibility, then adjust HDMI Input Mode on a compatible Fire TV Smart TV when an external source’s HDR or Dolby Vision is not working.

Which Fire TV privacy settings should you review?

On many Fire TV devices, these controls are under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings. The available controls and wording can vary by device, and Amazon says privacy settings are device-specific.

Device Usage Data

Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Device Usage Data to review this control. Amazon says turning it off stops processing device usage data for customized marketing offers and for improving products or features. Amazon also says it may continue processing data needed for device features, interest-based advertising using other data, and use of Amazon services such as Prime Video. This is a limited opt-out, not a switch that stops all data processing.

App Usage Data

Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Collect App Usage Data to opt out of collection of information about third-party apps’ opens, closes, and usage duration. Amazon describes this as a separate setting from Device Usage Data, so review both rather than assuming one control covers the other.

Interest-based Ads

Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Interest-based Ads. Amazon describes this control in relation to a resettable advertising ID: users can tell apps that use the ID not to use it to build advertising profiles or target interest-based ads on the device. It does not disable all advertising.

Over-the-air Viewing Data

This control applies to Fire TV Smart TVs. Under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, review the option for information about over-the-air content received through an antenna connected directly to the TV. It is distinct from streaming-app activity.

Where settings may differ

Menu paths and availability depend on the device. Amazon says certain Fire TV Smart TVs also allow privacy settings to be managed from an Amazon account under Your Devices > Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. If a path is missing, check the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming the control is present on every Fire TV Stick, box, or television.

What does Fire TV collect, and what do these controls mean?

Amazon describes device usage data as information about interactions with the device and its features, including home-screen navigation, device settings, and opening or closing apps and services. Its privacy FAQ states: “The operating system of your Amazon Device collects data about your use of the device and its features, such as your navigation of the home screen, selection of device settings (such as device language, display size, WiFi and Bluetooth options), or open and close of apps and services.”

  • Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.

That description is not a claim that every kind of data is used for every purpose. Device telemetry, third-party app usage data, advertising-ID-based activity, and antenna viewing information have distinct controls and stated purposes. Review each available control on the device you use.

Why is HDR or Dolby Vision not working on my Fire TV?

Amazon’s HDR and Dolby Vision troubleshooting steps are specifically for Fire TV Smart TVs. They address a format not working with compatible content or an external HDMI source; they are not a general picture-enhancement recipe, and the menu should not be assumed to exist on every Fire TV Stick or streaming box.

Easily discover what to watch from hundreds of thousands of movies and TV episodes (subscription fees may apply), including free, ad-supported content.
  • Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
  1. Confirm the content’s format. Check that the title or program supports the relevant format, such as Dolby Vision, 4K, or HDR.
  2. Check the connection. Inspect the cable connections. For an external source, connect it to the TV by HDMI and set the source device to output the format you are trying to use.
  3. Open the input’s picture settings. On the Fire TV Smart TV, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Picture Settings, then select the HDMI input connected to the source.
  4. Change HDMI Input Mode. Select HDMI Input Mode, then choose Auto or Mode 2 (2.0), following Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Try the remaining troubleshooting steps if needed. Amazon also lists restarting the TV and updating the app among its troubleshooting steps.

Changing HDMI Input Mode cannot make a TV, HDMI port, source, cable connection, or piece of content support a format it does not support. Treat the setting as a compatibility troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed way to improve every image.

How do I check whether my Fire TV supports a picture format?

Check the exact television or streaming device model before troubleshooting around a format. Amazon’s model information varies across Fire TV televisions in supported resolution, HDR formats, refresh rates, and HDMI port configuration. Compare the device and display with the content or external source: each part of the chain must support the format you want to use.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

  • Resolution: Check the supported resolution of the TV and source, as well as the resolution of the content.
  • HDR format: Confirm whether the TV and source support the specific format—such as HDR or Dolby Vision—rather than treating the formats as interchangeable.
  • Refresh rate: Check the model’s supported rates; a setting cannot add a capability the hardware lacks.
  • HDMI connection: Verify which port is connected and its listed capabilities, then check the source’s output and cable connections.

Amazon’s model lookup is the place to confirm the capabilities of a particular Fire TV television. The device’s specifications, not a universal settings list, determine which options are available.

Which picture settings should I change for a better image?

The available official guidance supports a targeted fix for HDR or Dolby Vision trouble on Fire TV Smart TVs, not one set of optimal picture settings for every Fire TV product. Start with the content, source, TV model, and connection. Change HDMI Input Mode only when troubleshooting the stated external-source compatibility issue; do not assume it will improve ordinary streaming or apply to a different device type.
