Four purchases deserve extra scrutiny—not an automatic ban: cheap USB cables with unclear specifications, hard disk drives bought for the wrong job, smart-home devices with weak support or privacy information, and older computers that cannot meet your needs. The right choice depends on the device’s capabilities, your use case, and the price, not simply whether a product is inexpensive or old.
Are cheap USB cables still worth buying?
Sometimes. The risk is buying a cable whose listing does not clearly state what it supports. Charging power, data speed, and display support are separate capabilities; a cable that works for basic charging may not handle a fast data transfer or an external display.
Before choosing one, check the cable’s stated data rate, power-delivery capability, length, and compatibility with the devices you intend to connect. Match those specifications to the ports and requirements of both devices. A USB4 cable rated for up to 40 Gbps is useful only when the connected devices and task can take advantage of that capability. The 40 Gbps figure is reported by BGR’s October 3, 2026 article, not independently verified here; do not treat it as a promise about every USB4 cable or device. Braided construction may appeal if you want a cable that feels more durable or tangles less, but it does not establish the cable’s electrical capabilities.

Should you buy a hard disk drive instead of an SSD?
It depends on whether you value inexpensive capacity or quick access and a compact drive more. A hard disk drive (HDD) stores data on mechanical components, while a solid-state drive (SSD) uses flash storage. An SSD can be a sensible choice for a computer’s main drive when responsiveness matters; an HDD can still make sense when you need lots of storage at a lower cost and can accommodate its form factor and performance trade-offs.
- Choose based on the job: Consider capacity, price, access speed, and whether the drive will be used internally, externally, or for a particular workload.
- Be cautious with used drives: A secondhand drive’s age and condition may be hard to establish. Do not make it the only home for files you cannot replace.
- Keep a separate backup: Any drive can fail. A backup on a different device or storage location reduces the consequences of failure; it does not make the original drive more reliable.
BGR’s October 3, 2026 article gives 10 years as an expected SSD lifespan depending on use, but names no study or manufacturer for that figure. It is not a dependable lifespan promise or a basis for assuming any particular SSD will last that long.

How should you judge a generic smart-home device?
Do not assume that a generic device is unsafe—or that a familiar brand makes a product risk-free. The article raises possible concerns about security, privacy, product support, and component quality, but does not cite a specific assessment or incident establishing that generic products share those problems.
Check the individual product before connecting it to your home network or relying on it for an important task:

- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Updates and support: Look for a stated way to receive software updates and information about how long the manufacturer will provide them.
- Privacy practices: Read what data the device collects, how it is used, and what controls are available.
- Security information: Check whether the maker explains account protection, network access, and how to report or address vulnerabilities.
- Quality and safety: Consider the device’s construction and whether its intended use calls for documented safety information.
If these details are unavailable, that uncertainty is a reason to reconsider the purchase—particularly for a device with access to sensitive information or control over something important in your home. It is not proof that the product is compromised.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it worth buying a computer, laptop, or tablet that is more than five years old?
Age is a useful prompt to investigate, not a universal cutoff. BGR’s October 3, 2026 article treats more than five years as a rule of thumb for avoiding many older laptops, netbooks, Chromebooks, and tablets, except as parts. It does not establish model-specific support dates, so check the exact device rather than relying on age alone.

Before buying, verify that the device still receives the software support you need, works with the applications and accessories you plan to use, and is in suitable condition. Compare its performance for your actual tasks and the total cost against a newer alternative. An older machine may be a poor fit if it cannot run required software or has costly defects; it may be reasonable if it meets your needs at a price that reflects its limitations.

- Used desktop components: A used CPU or another component can be good value if it is compatible with the existing system, works properly, and costs less than a suitable alternative.
- Upgradeable desktops: A desktop that can accept useful upgrades may remain practical longer than a fixed, unupgradeable device. Check compatibility and the cost of all required parts before committing.
- Parts or limited tasks: A device that is no longer suitable as a primary computer may still have value for parts or a narrow use, provided it can safely and reliably perform that role.
The article advises buying a new power supply when upgrading an older desktop, but does not provide technical evidence that every upgrade requires one. Assess the existing unit’s condition and specifications against the components you plan to install instead of treating age alone as a reason to replace it.
