Change four things, in this order: use the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, enable ARC/eARC (or the external audio output) on the TV, set the TV and any external player to pass the audio through as a bitstream instead of forcing stereo PCM, and then confirm that the title itself is in Atmos. Menu names differ by brand and model, so this guide describes what each setting does rather than one universal menu path.

Why a soundbar with Atmos may still not play Atmos

Atmos works only if every link in the chain supports it: the source, the app or disc, the TV (if audio passes through it), the cable and port, and the soundbar. A badge on the TV or soundbar does not guarantee that the particular service, subscription and title is delivering Atmos. Dolby advises checking the title’s Atmos badge and the service’s requirements (Dolby FAQs). Dolby also advises confirming compatibility with the specific manufacturers.

Step 1: Use the right HDMI port and connection route

Dolby describes a single HDMI connection from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s matching ARC/eARC port, and recommends eARC where both devices support it (Dolby connection guide). Plain HDMI ports on the TV will not return audio to the soundbar.

Route When it fits Key check
TV ARC/eARC to soundbar Built-in TV apps and devices plugged into the TV Both devices must support the needed format over the chosen interface. eARC handles Dolby MAT passthrough cases that ARC cannot.
Source into soundbar, soundbar to TV Streamer, disc player or console, if the soundbar has HDMI input and output Confirm the soundbar supports the source and passes the video format you need to the TV.
Optical or other non-HDMI Only where both manuals say it is supported Do not assume it carries Atmos; Dolby’s soundbar guidance centers on HDMI.

If you suspect the cable, check that it is rated for the connection and that you are in the labeled ports before replacing it. A high-speed HDMI cable (or one sold for eARC) is the usual replacement if yours is old or unmarked.

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Step 2: Set the TV’s audio output

  • Select the external audio device. In the TV’s sound settings, choose the HDMI soundbar/audio system as the output rather than the TV speakers.
  • Enable ARC/eARC. Turn on eARC (or ARC) where the TV makes it a toggle. Some TVs also need HDMI-CEC enabled for the link to be recognized.
  • Pick a passthrough-friendly digital output. Dolby lists auto, PCM, passthrough and bitstream as examples of TV output settings, and says behavior varies with the connected devices and interface (Dolby Professional Support). For Atmos, choose Auto, Passthrough or Bitstream if offered, and avoid forcing PCM.

ARC versus eARC: why it matters for Atmos

Without eARC, TVs usually send Dolby Digital Plus over ARC. That format can carry Atmos from many streaming apps. But for sources that output Atmos as Dolby MAT, Dolby states the TV must either transcode the MAT stream or pass it through via eARC, and that ARC is not sufficient because of its low bandwidth (Dolby Professional Support). So if an external device gives you no Atmos over an ARC link, either move to an eARC pair or connect that device straight to the soundbar.

Step 3: Set external players to bitstream

Dolby’s setup guide says a Blu-ray player must be connected to the soundbar by HDMI and set internally to support bitstream output (Dolby sound bar setup guide, 2018). The same applies to other HDMI-connected players and devices.

  • Easy setup – Connect the included HDMI cable to your TV's HDMI eARC/ARC port and instantly enjoy audio that’s always in sync.
  • Blu-ray player: choose HDMI bitstream output. Turn off secondary audio or audio mixing if present, because mixing other audio with the main track can produce a non-Atmos result.
  • Streamer or console: look in the device’s audio settings for a surround or Dolby Atmos option and select the bitstream or Atmos choice rather than stereo or PCM. If it runs through the TV, make sure the TV can pass the format (see the ARC/eARC section).

Step 4: Verify that Atmos is actually playing

  1. Start a title that carries the Atmos badge, on a subscription tier and device that support it.
  2. Watch the soundbar’s display or indicator light. Dolby says it shows when the soundbar is receiving and decoding Atmos.
  3. If you see plain Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, PCM or stereo instead, work through the troubleshooting list below.

Troubleshooting when Atmos does not show

  1. Confirm the title and plan truly offer Atmos on that app and device.
  2. Check the cable runs from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port, or use the direct-to-soundbar route.
  3. Revisit the TV’s output and ARC/eARC settings; move away from PCM.
  4. Check the external player’s output is bitstream, with Blu-ray secondary audio off.
  5. If the source uses Dolby MAT and the link is only ARC, switch to eARC or a compatible direct connection.

Setting names differ between manufacturers, so check the TV and soundbar manuals for exact labels and what each supports.
