In Germany, you can watch a few selected Bundesliga matches live for free, but there is no generally free stream of every match in the 2026/27 season. Most live fixtures are carried by subscription services; free-to-air coverage is limited to special matches, with free highlights available separately. If you’re outside Germany, rights may differ: check the official broadcaster directory for your location.

Which Bundesliga matches can you watch live for free in Germany?

For 2026/27, Sat.1 has selected free-to-air live fixtures, not a full-season package. Its listed exceptions include the season opener, the Supercup, all relegation matches and selected Friday fixtures around the winter break. Which match is available depends on the fixture; check the official broadcaster directory before kickoff.

The current Bundesliga TV plan assigns most regular live coverage to paid Sky/WOW and DAZN services. A free highlight programme or clip is not a live match stream.

How German live coverage is divided by match day

Match window Live coverage in Germany Free viewing
Friday, 20:30 Sky/WOW carries the match. Sat.1 shows selected special fixtures, including specified Friday games around the winter break. ARD highlights begin at 23:00.
Saturday, 15:30 Sky/WOW carries individual matches; DAZN carries the conference. ARD and ZDF offer highlights.
Saturday, 18:30 Sky/WOW carries the match. ZDF highlights begin at 21:45.
Sunday DAZN carries the listed live fixtures. ARD has evening highlights; Sport1 has a daytime highlights window for Friday and Saturday fixtures.
Tuesday/Wednesday match weeks and Thursday top match Sky/WOW carries individual matches and the Thursday top match; DAZN carries the conferences. The current TV plan does not list a general free live stream for these windows.

These assignments are for Germany and the 2026/27 season. The distinction between an individual match and a conference matters: the conference shows matches in parallel rather than one chosen fixture. Check the TV plan and fixture listing for the specific game.

Where to watch free Bundesliga highlights

  • ARD and ZDF: Free-to-air highlights are available in the programmes listed for the relevant match windows.
  • Monday digital clips: ZDF and Axel Springer publish short clips from Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga matches from Monday, according to the current TV guide.
  • Sport1: A daytime highlights window covers Friday and Saturday fixtures.

RTL offers paid highlights on demand immediately after matches; that is not a free live-stream option. Also, the RTL 2026/27 announcement about free-to-air and RTL+ Saturday-evening rights concerns the 2. Bundesliga, not the Bundesliga top flight.

How to check the broadcaster for a specific match

  1. Open the official broadcaster directory and select your location.
  2. Go to Fixtures & Results and find the match you want to watch.
  3. Check the listing close to kickoff. The directory says the active match broadcaster appears three days before kickoff.
  4. Confirm whether the listing is for a live match, a conference or highlights, and whether the service is free-to-air or requires a subscription.

For viewers outside Germany, use the country selector rather than assuming that German rights apply. The directory is location-based; the available information does not establish a free stream for every country or fixture.

Why a free stream may not be available

Bundesliga rights are sold by territory and package, so one match can have different broadcasters in different countries. In Germany, the current rights cycle covers 2025/26 through 2028/29; the DFL’s rights announcement describes Sky’s Friday and Saturday individual matches, DAZN’s Saturday conference and Sunday matches, and Sat.1’s selected free-to-air package. The current-season TV plan is the better source for the exact 2026/27 schedule.

That rights cycle is substantial: the DFL reported €1.121 billion per season in national media revenues for the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga combined, or €4.484 billion over four seasons. Those figures provide context for the divided packages; they do not mean every match is available on any one service.
