South Korean athletes who win Asian Games gold can qualify for military service as arts and sports personnel. In a team event, an athlete must have actually participated in the competition. Silver or bronze at the Asian Games is not enough. The medal does not itself cancel service: athletes must apply, receive a ministerial recommendation, and be assigned by the Military Manpower Administration.
Which Asian Games results qualify?
Article 68-11 of South Korea’s Enforcement Decree of the Military Service Act sets the sports achievement threshold: first place at the Asian Games. That means gold qualifies under the stated criterion; silver and bronze do not. The decree version effective October 2, 2026, was amended by Presidential Decree No. 36728 on September 29, 2026. For a team competition, the decree requires the athlete to have actually participated in the competition. A team’s gold therefore does not, by itself, establish that every person associated with the team qualifies. The legal text does not specify in the cited provision a minimum number of minutes played or require participation in a particular match, so those details should not be assumed from the threshold alone.

The Associated Press reported on October 3, 2026, that South Korean golfer Tom Kim (Kim Joo-hyung) won men’s singles gold and received the benefit. After South Korea won League of Legends gold at the 2022 Asian Games, the Associated Press reported that team members received the benefit. Lee Sang-hyeok, known as Faker, had played in earlier games but missed the final and was included. That is a reported example, not a substitute for the decree’s participation requirement. “Exemption” is common shorthand, but the legal mechanism is assignment as arts and sports personnel, an alternative service classification—not an automatic discharge triggered by a medal. Government legal guidance describes the eligible pool as people subject to active-duty enlistment or supplemental service call-up who are recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The guidance was current as of September 15, 2026.

- Ministerial recommendation: The decree says the minister is to notify the Commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration of the recommended list within 14 days of receiving the application.
- Assignment: The Military Manpower Administration assigns arts and sports personnel to designated fields. The qualifying result is therefore one step in a formal process, not proof that every holder of a gold medal has already been assigned.
The decree states the criteria and route; it does not establish in the cited material an aggregate number of Asian Games medalists who ultimately receive the assignment.
What does “exemption” mean in practical terms?
It means qualifying athletes may be assigned to arts and sports personnel service rather than having the medal erase every service obligation. The Associated Press described about 18 months as the service period for most able-bodied South Korean men in its October 2026 report; that is an approximate contextual figure, not a universal duration or the length of arts and sports personnel service. In the same report, Tom Kim said after winning gold: “Despite that, I’m more proud that I’m able to bring a medal for my country.”
