Three names to know are Fermata Auto, Screen2Auto, and CarStream, all listed in the AAAD project documentation. Treat them as apps to investigate—not guaranteed recommendations: AAAD says it cannot guarantee they will work, and Android Auto updates may break the installation method.
Which sideloaded apps are listed for Android Auto?
AAAD documents these three third-party apps. Its list confirms that the project names them; it does not verify their current features, maintenance status, or compatibility with your phone, car, Android version, or Android Auto build.

AAAD says it does not support the listed apps themselves and provides them “as is.” The names alone are not evidence that an app is safe, actively maintained, or usable with a particular vehicle.
What should you check before installing?
Confirm the current compatibility picture
AAAD says compatibility is uncertain for its 2.x versions on Android 14 and newer, and flags versions below 2.0 as incompatible. These are project-reported caveats, not a Google compatibility guarantee. Check AAAD’s current release notes and reports for your specific phone and Android Auto version before relying on the installer.

AAAD suggests considering an AAWireless USB dongle for Android 14+ app-availability problems. That is the project’s suggestion, not a requirement or proof that an adapter will fix a failure.
Use the official source and understand the limits
AAAD identifies its GitHub repository as its only official download source and says third-party download sites are unaffiliated. Verify the source before downloading. The project disputes Play Protect warnings, but that is the project author’s position; it is not independent verification. Do not treat it as a reason to disable Play Protect.

Google documents a developer mode and an “unknown sources” option for Android Auto. The option applies to media, messaging notifications, and parked apps; it does not apply to apps built with the Android for Cars App Library. It is a limited developer and testing setting, not permission to make any Android phone app available on the car screen. Google also says apps used in real vehicles generally need to be installed from a trusted source.

Do not watch video, mirror a phone screen, or interact with a parked-only screen app while the vehicle is moving. Google says, “To help keep drivers and passengers safe, users have additional restrictions on how they can interact with apps while driving.” On Android 15 and higher, supported parked-app activities automatically exit when vehicle motion is detected. That behavior is a platform safeguard, not a reason to try to use screen-based apps in motion.

How to find officially compatible Android Auto apps
For supported options, use Google’s compatible-app listing in the Play Store rather than assuming an app can be sideloaded into Android Auto. Google notes that you must be signed in to a Google Account and have personalization enabled to see all compatible apps there.
