Change the Apple Watch SE 3 settings in this order: review Always On and what is visible with your wrist down, make the display readable and control when it wakes, create an intentional sleep schedule, then review sleep and other health features. This order deals first with what you notice every minute, then with overnight tracking and privacy-sensitive data.
You can make these changes in the watch’s Settings app, in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, or through Control Center for common controls. Apple says settings remain in sync between these locations, so use whichever screen is easiest.
Start with Always On, visibility, and privacy
Always On is enabled by default on Apple Watch SE 3. With your wrist down, the display dims rather than going completely dark, allowing the time and selected information to remain visible. The setting is useful for quick glances, but it also determines whether complication data, notifications, and app information can be seen by someone nearby.

- On the watch, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On.
- Leave Always On enabled if you regularly check the time or complications without raising your wrist.
- Open the options for Show Complication Data, Show Notifications, and Show Apps.
- Turn off categories that reveal information you do not want displayed while the watch is dimmed.
- Turn Always On off if you prefer the display to wake only when you raise your wrist, press the screen, or use the Digital Crown.
Turning Always On off can increase battery life, but Apple does not specify a guaranteed or universal amount of extra runtime. Battery results vary with brightness, notifications, workouts, cellular use, and other settings.

| Choice | Convenience | Privacy | Battery priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always On with selected information | Time and chosen complications remain available for quick glances. | You can hide notification, app, or complication categories individually. | Uses more power than turning Always On off. |
| Always On off | The display wakes on demand instead of staying dimly visible. | Nothing remains visible while the wrist is down. | Apple says this can increase battery life, without stating a fixed gain. |
Know when Always On is unavailable
Low Power Mode and Theater Mode disable Always On. If the display suddenly stops remaining visible, check whether either mode is active before changing the Always On preference itself. Theater Mode is also intended to keep the screen dark and silence normal wake behavior in situations such as a cinema or meeting.
Make the display readable and wake behavior predictable
After deciding what should remain visible, adjust the display for your eyes and your routine. These controls are in Settings > Display & Brightness on the watch.
Set brightness, text size, and weight
- Brightness: Choose a level that is legible in the environments where you use the watch. A brighter screen can be easier to read outdoors but may use more power.
- Text Size: Increase it if messages, labels, or complications are difficult to read at a glance. Decrease it if larger text causes important information to be truncated.
- Bold Text: Enable it when stronger letter shapes improve contrast and recognition. It can make small labels easier to distinguish without changing the entire interface layout.
Change one setting at a time and check the watch face, notifications, and a typical app. A size that works for a notification may make a dense complication less useful, so judge the combination rather than a single screen.
Control when the screen wakes
Wake controls determine whether ordinary movements or crown use activate the display. Review Wake on Wrist Raise if the screen turns on when you do not intend it to, such as during exercise, driving, or desk work. Review Wake on Crown Rotation if turning the Digital Crown causes unwanted activation.
Wake Duration controls how long the display remains active after waking. Choose a shorter duration for quick time checks and lower distraction, or a longer duration when you often read a notification or interact with an app immediately after raising your wrist.
| Situation | Settings to try | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The screen activates during arm movement | Review or disable Wake on Wrist Raise. | You may need to tap the display or press the crown for deliberate checks. |
| The crown wakes the screen unexpectedly | Review Wake on Crown Rotation. | Crown-based wake access becomes less immediate. |
| You only glance at the time | Use a shorter Wake Duration. | Long messages may require another wake or interaction. |
| You read notifications on the watch | Use a longer Wake Duration. | The screen remains active longer and may use more power. |
Set up Sleep before your first night
If you plan to wear the SE 3 overnight, configure sleep before relying on its data. Open the Sleep app to set a sleep goal, bedtime and wake schedule, an optional wind-down period, and a wake alarm.

Choose a schedule and goal that match real life
- Open the Sleep app and create the days and times you normally intend to sleep.
- Set a sleep goal that reflects the amount of sleep you are trying to obtain, rather than simply copying an ideal number.
- Add a wind-down period if you want a predictable transition into bedtime.
- Set a wake alarm when you need a consistent morning alert.
- Adjust individual days if your weekday and weekend routines differ.
A schedule is a planning aid, not a promise that the watch will record a complete night. If you go to bed outside the schedule, verify that sleep tracking is enabled and that the watch has enough battery for the night.

Sleep Focus limits distractions and simplifies the display during the scheduled sleep period. Automatic activation is useful when you want the same quiet routine every night. Manual control is better when your bedtime changes often, you work shifts, or you do not want a schedule to silence alerts unexpectedly.
Before enabling automatic Sleep Focus, decide which people or apps must still reach you. The exact allowed-alert choices are personal; the important point is to test the setting during an evening when missing an alert would not cause a problem.
Turn on the tracking features you actually want
In Settings > Sleep, review Sleep Tracking. When enabled, Apple says the watch estimates periods of wakefulness and sleep stages identified as REM, Core, and Deep. The Sleep app presents trends covering the previous 14 days.
These are estimates derived from watch sensors and movement patterns, not a clinical sleep assessment. Treat a single unusual night as a data point rather than a diagnosis, and look for persistent patterns before changing your routine.

Charging Reminders can prompt you to charge before bed when the battery is below 30 percent. Enable them in the sleep-related settings if you commonly forget to charge. If the watch is already charged sufficiently, no reminder is needed; if it is below the threshold, the prompt gives you an opportunity to top it up before tracking begins.

Overnight tracking requires a practical charging routine. Charge after workouts, while showering, or during another predictable break, and confirm the watch is back on your wrist before bedtime. The SE 3 supports fast charging, but the reminder does not replace checking that the charger is connected and the watch is actually gaining power.
Review health features with the right expectations
Apple identifies sleep score and wrist temperature tracking among Apple Watch SE 3 capabilities in watchOS 26. Apple’s health documentation also describes sleep and heart-related notifications, while warning that feature availability can vary by model and region.
Complete the relevant setup
- Open the health or sleep feature when prompted and finish its setup rather than dismissing it permanently.
- Review which notifications you want to receive, especially if repeated alerts would create anxiety or distraction.
- Check privacy settings for health data and decide which information you are comfortable storing or sharing.
- Confirm that the feature is available for your specific SE 3 configuration and location; availability is not universal across every model or region.
Interpret measurements as information, not diagnosis
Sleep score and wrist temperature can help you notice trends in your own data. They do not, by themselves, diagnose illness or explain why a value changed. Temperature readings can be affected by environment, fit, sleep position, and normal variation. Use persistent concerns or symptoms as a reason to consult a qualified health professional, not as a reason to self-diagnose from one watch reading.

Apple says settings remain in sync between the watch, the Apple Watch app on iPhone, and Control Center. The labels and available controls can depend on the watchOS version and the feature involved.
| Where | Best use | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Settings app on Apple Watch | Immediate changes while wearing the watch. | Open Settings and use Display & Brightness, Sleep, Privacy, or the relevant feature category. |
| Apple Watch app on iPhone | Detailed setup with a larger screen and easier typing. | Open the Apple Watch app, choose the watch, then navigate to the matching display, sleep, notification, or health section. |
| Control Center | Common temporary controls. | Open Control Center and use the available mode or connection controls; return to Settings for detailed Always On, wake, and sleep options. |
If a change made on one device does not appear immediately on the other, keep both devices nearby and allow synchronization to finish before repeating the change. Repeatedly changing the same option in two places can make it difficult to tell which preference is active.

- Check Always On: Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On. Decide whether the convenience is worth the visibility and battery trade-off.
- Restrict dimmed information: Review Show Complication Data, Show Notifications, and Show Apps. Disable any category that exposes information unnecessarily.
- Set readability: Adjust brightness, text size, and Bold Text while viewing the watch face and a sample notification.
- Stop accidental wakes: Review Wake on Wrist Raise and Wake on Crown Rotation. Set Wake Duration for either quick glances or longer reading.
- Create sleep settings: In the Sleep app, set a goal, schedule, wind-down period, and alarm if wanted.
- Choose Sleep Focus behavior: Decide whether it should activate automatically and verify which alerts remain allowed.
- Prepare for charging: In Settings > Sleep, review Sleep Tracking and Charging Reminders. A reminder can prompt charging below 30 percent.
- Review health privacy: Complete setup for sleep score, wrist temperature, and other available health features, then check notification and data-sharing preferences.
Fix the most common surprises
Always On appears to be broken
Check Low Power Mode and Theater Mode first, because both disable Always On. If neither is active, return to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On and verify the feature and its visibility categories.

The watch wakes too often
Review Wake on Wrist Raise and Wake on Crown Rotation, then shorten Wake Duration if the screen remains active longer than necessary. Also check whether a frequently updating complication or notification is drawing your attention; Always On visibility controls can hide those categories while the wrist is down.
Sleep data is missing
Confirm Sleep Tracking is enabled in Settings > Sleep, that the watch was worn securely, and that it had enough charge to last through the night. Check the Sleep app’s 14-day view after more than one night; a single night may not show a useful trend.
Sleep Focus silences something important
Change the automatic schedule or allowed alerts rather than disabling every sleep feature. If your schedule varies, use manual Sleep Focus activation until the routine becomes predictable.
Revisit settings after a week
Once you have used the watch for several days, review the choices that depend on your habits. If you rarely look at the display with your wrist down, disabling Always On may better match your priorities. If messages are hard to read, revisit text size, Bold Text, brightness, and Wake Duration together. For sleep, compare your schedule with the 14-day trend view and adjust the goal or bedtime instead of treating individual estimates as definitive. Finally, reassess health notifications and privacy permissions so the watch provides useful information without exposing more data or sending more alerts than you want.
