Before turning on Siri, review Settings > General > Siri, then check privacy, language, region, dictation, profiles and audio-input choices. Apple TV supports standard Siri, but Apple’s current Apple Intelligence and Siri AI device requirements do not list Apple TV. In practice, you are enabling Apple TV’s regular voice assistant—not Apple Intelligence on the television box.
The most important choices are whether to allow Siri and Dictation samples to be stored and reviewed, which apps may work with Ask Siri, which language and region Apple TV uses, and whether family members need separate voice profiles.
Apple TV Siri is not the same as Apple Intelligence
Apple’s platform documentation distinguishes three labels: standard Siri, Siri with Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI (Beta). Apple TV is documented as using standard Siri. Apple’s requirements for Apple Intelligence list compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro models, while Apple TV is not included. The separate Siri AI requirements page also lists Apple Intelligence-capable devices rather than Apple TV.
That distinction matters because enabling the Siri switch on Apple TV does not unlock Apple Intelligence writing tools, the newer conversational Siri interface or other Apple Intelligence features on the television. It enables the Apple TV voice features available for your model, language and region. See Apple’s current device requirements for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI before assuming a feature shown on an iPhone or iPad will appear on Apple TV.

1. Review every control in Settings > General > Siri
On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > General > Siri before switching the feature on. Apple lists the available Siri controls in its Apple TV Siri settings guide. The exact choices can vary with tvOS version, language, region and connected audio hardware.
Siri
This is the main on/off control. If the switch is unavailable or missing, do not keep changing unrelated privacy settings first; check the model, market, language and Apple Account conditions described later in this guide.
Siri Language
Choose the language you expect to speak and hear. Siri and dictation support depend on the selected language, so a language mismatch can make Siri unavailable or cause it to misunderstand requests. Set the Apple TV language deliberately rather than assuming the language used on another Apple device will automatically apply.

AirPods listening
This section controls how supported AirPods can be used for Siri listening. Apple documents additional choices for AirPods Pro (second generation or later); other supported AirPods use the Hey Siri option. Review this before expecting hands-free requests, and verify that the AirPods model you intend to use is supported for the option shown on your Apple TV.
Siri & Dictation History
Review this separately from the Improve Siri & Dictation consent. The history control is where Apple TV presents its local Siri and dictation-history setting. Read the wording on your software version and choose the setting that fits your household’s privacy expectations. Do not treat opening this panel as equivalent to opting in to Apple’s sample-review program; that is controlled under Privacy & Security.
Always Show Speech
Use this when you want spoken requests displayed on screen as text. It can help you verify what Apple TV heard, particularly when a family uses several languages or when names and titles are easy to misrecognize. If other people can see the television, remember that displayed speech may reveal the request to everyone in the room.

On-Screen Actions
Review whether Siri may present actions and controls on the television screen while processing a request. This is useful when you want visible confirmation of what Siri is doing, but it may be less desirable in a room where you prefer a quieter interface. The available wording and behavior can depend on tvOS.

Use with Ask Siri
Check the app permissions listed here. Allow only the apps you want to respond to Ask Siri or expose information through Siri. A streaming, music or smart-home app may need permission for voice commands, while a privacy-sensitive app may be better left disabled. Revisit the list after installing an app that adds Siri support.
2. Make the separate privacy decision under Privacy & Security
Open Settings > General > Privacy & Security. Apple’s Apple TV privacy guide identifies controls for Improve Siri & Dictation, Microphone, Location Services, Tracking, Apple Home and analytics. The controls are independent of the Siri switch, so turning Siri on does not by itself answer every privacy question. Improve Siri & Dictation
This is the setting that deserves the closest review. When you opt in, Apple says it may store and review samples of your Siri, Dictation and Translate interactions, including audio, transcripts and related request data. Apple says the request history is associated with a random device-generated identifier, is not used to build a marketing profile and is never sold.
Choose Improve Siri & Dictation according to whether the potential quality improvement is worth allowing those samples to be stored and reviewed. If you do not want to participate, leave this option off. That choice is separate from using Siri itself: you can use standard Siri while declining this improvement program.
Microphone
Review which apps have microphone access. Siri needs an audio-input path when you speak through the Siri Remote or supported AirPods, but other apps do not automatically need microphone access. Remove permission from apps that have no reason to listen, and check this list after adding new software.

Location Services
Some requests and apps may use location information. Keep Location Services limited to apps and features for which the benefit is clear. If a location-based request fails, confirm this setting before concluding that Siri itself is broken.
Tracking
Use the Tracking controls to review whether apps may request permission to track activity across services. This is a separate advertising and privacy decision, not a prerequisite for basic Siri voice input.
Apple Home
If Apple TV is part of a Home setup, check which apps or features can interact with your home data. Grant access only to apps you trust with the household’s device and room information.
Analytics
Review the analytics-sharing choices alongside Improve Siri & Dictation. They cover different categories of information, so declining one does not necessarily decline the other. Read each switch’s description on your tvOS version instead of assuming a single global privacy toggle controls everything.
3. Verify language, region and dictation before troubleshooting Siri
Check three general settings before trying to fix an unavailable Siri switch:
- Open Settings > General > Apple TV Languages and confirm the primary language you intend to use.
- Open Settings > General > Region and verify the country or region.
- Open Settings > General > Dictation and review the dictation setting and language choices.
Apple warns that Siri and dictation can depend on the selected language. Siri availability also depends on supported countries or regions and matching Apple Account billing information. If the Apple TV region and Apple Account billing region do not align with a supported market, the Siri option may not be available even when the hardware is capable. After changing language or region, return to Settings > General > Siri and check the switch again. Use the same language for dictation and Siri while testing; changing several languages at once makes it difficult to identify which setting resolved the problem.

Siri Remote method
Apple documents Siri for Apple TV 4K (first generation and later) and Apple TV HD in supported markets. To make a request, hold the Siri button on the Siri Remote, speak, and release the button. This push-to-talk method gives you a deliberate moment to speak and avoids leaving a microphone listening continuously. The remote must be the Siri-enabled remote supplied or paired for your Apple TV model and market.
AirPods method
Supported AirPods can provide a more convenient listening path when you are not holding the remote. In Settings > General > Siri, inspect the AirPods listening choices. AirPods Pro (second generation or later) have additional documented options; other supported AirPods use Hey Siri. Availability depends on the AirPods generation, Apple TV software and region, so use the choices Apple TV actually displays rather than assuming every AirPods model behaves the same way.

5. Set up voice recognition for a household
Apple TV can recognize individual voices when each person has a profile. Apple’s documented process starts on an iPhone or iPad: set up voice recognition there, then open Settings > Profiles and Accounts on Apple TV 4K and enable Recognize My Voice for each profile. Apple documents up to six profiles. Follow Apple’s voice-recognition setup guide for the current prompts.
- Give each household member an Apple TV profile rather than sharing one profile.
- On each person’s iPhone or iPad, complete the voice-recognition setup requested by Apple.
- On Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Profiles and Accounts.
- Select a profile and turn on Recognize My Voice.
- Repeat for the other profiles, up to the six profiles Apple documents.
- Test a request while the intended profile is active, then switch profiles and test again.
Voice recognition improves account separation in a multi-user home, but it does not turn Apple TV into an Apple Intelligence device. It is a profile and personalization feature for Apple TV’s standard Siri experience.
A practical order for enabling Siri
Use this sequence if you want to make the decisions once and avoid chasing symptoms later:
- Confirm that your Apple TV is an Apple TV 4K (first generation or later) or Apple TV HD and that Siri is supported in your market.
- Set Settings > General > Apple TV Languages, Region and Dictation to the language and market you actually use.
- Open Settings > General > Privacy & Security and decide on Improve Siri & Dictation, microphone, location, tracking, Apple Home and analytics permissions.
- Open Settings > General > Siri and review Siri Language, Siri & Dictation History, Always Show Speech, On-Screen Actions and Use with Ask Siri.
- Choose whether Siri should listen through the Siri Remote, supported AirPods or both.
- Turn on Siri and make a simple request in the selected language.
- If several people use the Apple TV, configure Recognize My Voice for each profile.
Why Siri may be unavailable, and what to check
The Siri switch is missing or disabled
- Check the hardware generation. Apple’s documented support covers Apple TV 4K (first generation and later) and Apple TV HD, with availability varying by market.
- Check the country or region in Settings > General > Region.
- Check that the Apple Account billing information matches a supported region where Apple requires that match.
- Check the Apple TV language and dictation language; unsupported combinations can affect Siri availability.
- Return to Settings > General > Siri after those changes.
Siri hears the wrong words
- Use Siri Language and Dictation to select the language you are actually speaking.
- Turn on Always Show Speech temporarily so you can see what Apple TV recognized.
- Try the Siri Remote method—hold the button, speak, release—to establish a clean test before switching to AirPods.
- If AirPods are involved, check the AirPods listening option and the generation-specific choices shown on Apple TV.
A request works for one person but not another
- Confirm that the correct Apple TV profile is active.
- Complete voice recognition on the person’s iPhone or iPad.
- In Settings > Profiles and Accounts, enable Recognize My Voice for that profile.
- Check the app’s permission under Settings > General > Siri > Use with Ask Siri.
You want Siri but not stored samples
Leave Improve Siri & Dictation turned off under Settings > General > Privacy & Security. Apple treats this as an opt-in program for storing and reviewing samples; it is not the same switch as enabling Siri. You can still review the separate Siri & Dictation History setting under Settings > General > Siri.
