For most streaming households, buy the 64GB Wi‑Fi Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, model A2737). Choose the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model (A2843) if you need a wired network connection, Thread smart-home support, or more room for apps and games. Both use the A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1 and Wi‑Fi 6; the 128GB model is not automatically better picture quality.

Quick answer: which Apple TV 4K is right for you?

The 2022 third-generation Apple TV 4K comes in two configurations rather than two performance tiers. They share the A15 Bionic processor, HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ video up to 4K at 60 frames per second. The meaningful differences are storage, networking and Thread.

  • Buy 64GB Wi‑Fi (A2737) for streaming services, AirPlay and ordinary app use when your wireless network is dependable.
  • Buy 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet (A2843) when the Apple TV will connect by cable, when you use Thread accessories, or when you expect a large app or game library.
  • Do not buy 128GB solely for better video. The larger model does not add a higher resolution, a faster processor or a different HDR format.
  • Consider the second generation only if its price is substantially lower. It still has HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread, while the first generation is outside the support list for tvOS 27.

What changes between the 64GB and 128GB third-generation models?

When 64GB is enough

Streaming video does not require you to store films locally. If the box is mainly used for television apps, music, AirPlay and occasional downloads, 64GB provides the intended capacity. The system and installed software use part of the nominal storage, so the free space shown after setup will be lower than 64GB; Apple does not publish a guaranteed usable-space figure in the cited specifications.

Apple TV 4K 32GB Streaming Media Player (2017), Model A1842, Siri Remote, HDMI, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Black, MQD22LL/A (Renewed)
  • 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
  • Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
  • A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
  • Voice search by asking the Siri Remote

Choose A2737 when your router provides stable coverage where the television sits and you do not need to run a network cable. Wi‑Fi 6 is the same wireless standard used by the 128GB model, so moving to the more expensive configuration will not improve a weak signal by itself.

When 128GB is worthwhile

The A2843 makes sense for a household that installs many apps, keeps several games available, or wants extra headroom for downloaded content and app data. Storage is a convenience and capacity buffer, not a guarantee of faster app loading: both models use the same A15 Bionic chip.

The larger configuration is also the only third-generation version with built-in Gigabit Ethernet and a Thread radio listed by Apple. If either feature is part of your plan, the 128GB choice is not merely an upgrade; it is the required configuration in this generation.

Is Apple TV Ethernet worth paying for?

Choose Ethernet for predictable connectivity

Gigabit Ethernet can be valuable when the television is near a router, switch or wired wall socket. A cable avoids local wireless congestion and reduces dependence on signal strength, neighboring networks and the placement of the access point. It is particularly sensible for a busy home in which several devices stream or transfer files at the same time.

Ethernet cannot fix a slow internet subscription or an overloaded streaming service. It also does not increase the Apple TV’s video ceiling: both third-generation models support Dolby Vision and HDR10+ up to 4K60.

Stay with Wi‑Fi when wiring is inconvenient

If running a cable would require drilling, a long visible lead or an additional network switch, the 64GB model’s Wi‑Fi 6 connection is the simpler choice. Test the television’s actual location rather than assuming a router’s headline speed will be available through walls. If streams are already stable at the desired quality, Ethernet’s main benefit is resilience rather than visibly sharper video.

Thread is a separate reason to choose A2843

Thread is a low-power mesh networking technology for compatible smart-home accessories. Apple lists Thread on the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet third-generation model and does not list it on A2737. Buy A2843 if you specifically plan to use the Apple TV as part of a Thread-based home; do not assume that adding Ethernet through an external adapter can add the missing radio.

Picture quality and performance: what both models provide

Apple’s third-generation specifications identify the A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support up to 4K60 for the line. The storage configuration does not change those capabilities. Your television, streaming service, subscription tier and source video still determine what you actually see.

HDMI is not included in the box. Apple supplies a Siri Remote (3rd generation) and a power lead, while the HDMI cable is sold separately. Add a suitable cable to the purchase rather than assuming an existing television cable is in the package.

The Siri Remote has a rechargeable battery. Apple’s specification describes “months of battery life on a single charge (with typical daily usage).” Actual intervals vary with use, but the remote is intended to be recharged rather than fitted with disposable batteries.

How the Apple TV 4K generations differ

Model Year Storage options Processor information in the cited specifications Networking HDMI Thread
Apple TV 4K (1st generation), A1842 2017 32GB or 64GB Not stated in Apple’s published specifications Gigabit Ethernet; 802.11ac Wi‑Fi HDMI 2.0a Not stated
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), A2169 2021 32GB or 64GB Not stated in Apple’s published specifications Gigabit Ethernet; Wi‑Fi 6 HDMI 2.1 Yes
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), A2737 2022 64GB A15 Bionic Wi‑Fi 6; no built-in Ethernet listed HDMI 2.1 Not listed
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), A2843 2022 128GB A15 Bionic Gigabit Ethernet; Wi‑Fi 6 HDMI 2.1 Yes

The first-generation unit has the oldest HDMI and wireless standards in this comparison. It may still function for existing services, but its update horizon is the key concern rather than storage alone.

Which generations still receive software updates?

TechRadar reported on 11 June 2026 that tvOS 27 supports the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K and excludes the 2017 first-generation model. That makes A2169, A2737 and A2843 the models with documented tvOS 27 support in the cited reporting.

Support after tvOS 27 is unconfirmed. Apple can change compatibility with a future release, so a used second-generation device should be priced as an older product with a shorter remaining support horizon than the 2022 models, not as an equivalent substitute for a new A15-based unit.

Price, HDMI cable and total budget

Configuration Listed price reported in June 2026 What is included or still required
64GB Wi‑Fi (A2737) $199 / £199 / AU$299 Apple TV, Siri Remote (3rd generation) and power lead; HDMI cable sold separately
128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet (A2843) $249 / £249 / AU$399 Apple TV, Siri Remote (3rd generation) and power lead; HDMI cable sold separately

What Hi‑Fi reported those listed prices in June 2026. Retail discounts, stock and regional pricing can change, so check the buyer’s market before paying. The cited information does not establish a universal HDMI-cable price; include the cable as a separate line item in your total rather than treating either Apple TV configuration as a complete television connection kit.

The $50/£50/AU$100 difference reported between the two configurations buys double the nominal storage, Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. If you will not use those networking or smart-home features and your app library is modest, the lower-priced model preserves the same processor and video support.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Check the network first. If the television location already has a reliable Ethernet connection, mark A2843 as the relevant third-generation model. If it does not, assess Wi‑Fi stability before paying for a configuration whose wired port you may never use.
  2. Decide whether Thread matters. If your smart-home plan includes Thread accessories, choose A2843 because Apple lists the radio only on that third-generation configuration.
  3. Estimate app and game usage. Choose 64GB for streaming-first use; choose 128GB when you expect a substantial installed library or want more storage headroom.
  4. Verify the model number. Confirm A2737 or A2843 on the listing or packaging. Used listings can describe an Apple TV simply as “4K” even though the generations have different ports and support outlooks.
  5. Budget for HDMI. Apple includes the power lead but sells the HDMI cable separately. Make sure the cable is available before installation.
  6. Compare the complete price. Check the local currency, retailer discount and return policy, then add the separately purchased cable to either configuration’s listed price.

Which Apple TV 4K should different households buy?

Streaming-only household with good Wi‑Fi

Buy A2737. You receive the same A15 Bionic processor, HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6 and HDR capabilities as the 128GB model without paying for Ethernet, Thread or capacity you are unlikely to use.

Home with a network socket beside the television

Buy A2843. The wired connection removes wireless variability, and the extra storage is included with the only third-generation configuration that has Gigabit Ethernet.

Smart-home enthusiast planning Thread accessories

Buy A2843 even if streaming alone would fit comfortably in 64GB. Thread availability is a hardware difference, so it cannot be added later by changing a setting.

Large app or game library

Prefer A2843 for its 128GB capacity. It will not render games faster, but it gives installed software and app data more room before you need to remove something.

Buyer finding a discounted second-generation unit

A2169 remains the more defensible used option than A1842 because it has HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6, Gigabit Ethernet, Thread and documented tvOS 27 support. Compare its actual price with a new third-generation model and account for its older processor generation and shorter expected support runway.

Buyer considering a first-generation bargain

Treat A1842 as a legacy purchase. Its 2017 design uses HDMI 2.0a and 802.11ac Wi‑Fi, and the cited tvOS 27 compatibility report excludes it. A very low price does not compensate for losing current software support if the device is intended for several more years of daily use.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming more storage improves picture quality: both third-generation configurations have the same video ceiling.
  • Assuming every Apple TV 4K has Ethernet: A2737 has no built-in Ethernet listed by Apple; Ethernet is standard on A2843 and the second-generation model.
  • Buying a 64GB unit for Thread: Apple lists Thread only on A2843 in the third-generation range.
  • Forgetting the HDMI cable: it is sold separately, while the power lead is included.
  • Using a generic generation label for a used purchase: verify A1842, A2169, A2737 or A2843 so the ports, storage and update expectations match the listing.
  • Treating tvOS 27 as a lifetime guarantee: the cited report establishes support for that release, not for every future version.
