Start with Settings > Video and Audio. Leave Apple TV 4K on a format supported by your television, turn on Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate under Match Content, and keep Audio Format set to Auto unless your receiver or television needs a fallback. Those choices preserve compatible content characteristics without forcing one resolution or audio conversion on every setup.
After that, change settings only for a specific problem—such as missing HDR, cropped picture, delayed wireless audio, or dialogue that is hard to understand. The exact options depend on your Apple TV generation, display, HDMI path and region.
The best first-pass settings

Apple says Apple TV selects the best available video and audio formats supported by connected equipment. Therefore, there is no universal “force 4K” or “force Dolby” setting that is correct for every television and receiver. Apple’s video settings guide and audio settings guide describe the choices exposed by your particular connection.

Match the source content to your display
Turn on Match Dynamic Range
Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and turn on Match Dynamic Range. Apple TV then switches between compatible dynamic-range formats so content mastered for standard dynamic range, HDR10, Dolby Vision or another supported format is not unnecessarily converted to the output format you selected for the interface.
A switch can briefly blank or flicker the screen while the television changes modes. That interruption is expected. If an option is marked as unverified, use Apple TV’s on-screen test before relying on it; a failed test means the television or HDMI path may not sustain that format.
Turn on Match Frame Rate
Enable Match Frame Rate in the same menu. Films and shows can be mastered at different frame rates, and matching lets compatible material play at its original rate instead of being converted to the Apple TV interface rate. The display may briefly go black during a rate change, just as it does for dynamic-range matching.

Some viewers prefer to leave frame matching off because every change introduces a short mode switch. If you notice repeated blanking with a particular app or television, test playback with the option disabled and decide whether uninterrupted transitions or source-rate fidelity matters more for your room.
What the matching switches do not guarantee
Matching works only when the app, content, television and HDMI chain support the requested mode. A title cannot display in a format your panel, receiver or cable path rejects. If a format is absent from the menu, identify the Apple TV model and inspect the television’s input specifications before assuming a software fault.

Choose a compatible video format, HDMI output and chroma
Format: select a supported mode, not a forced maximum
In Settings > Video and Audio, choose a format listed as supported by the connected display. The available resolutions and refresh rates change with the Apple TV model, television, selected aspect ratio and HDMI equipment. Selecting a mode that the television cannot accept can produce a blank screen or repeated handshake failures, so do not choose a higher specification merely because it appears in a list.
YCbCr, RGB High and RGB Low
Apple states that YCbCr is preferred for most TVs (Apple Support). RGB options can work correctly, but the television’s black-level or range setting must match: RGB High and RGB Low are not interchangeable. Apple also requires a high-speed HDMI cable for those RGB choices.
If black areas look gray, crushed or lacking detail after selecting RGB, return to YCbCr or make the television’s range setting agree with the Apple TV output. Change one side at a time so you can identify which setting fixed the mismatch.
Chroma 4:2:0 versus 4:4:4
Chroma 4:2:0 works with most televisions and HDMI cables. 4:4:4 can make fine text and interface edges clearer, but it needs a high-speed HDMI cable and a television input that accepts the signal. For ordinary video viewing, 4:2:0 is usually the safer compatibility choice; try 4:4:4 when small text looks soft and the complete HDMI path is rated for it.
The options shown are connection-dependent. If you cannot see a chroma selector, that is normally a limitation of the current format or equipment rather than a missing hidden control.

Set audio for compatibility before changing sound preferences
Leave Audio Format on Auto
Under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format, Auto is Apple’s recommended starting point. Apple TV decodes the best format supported by the connected equipment and sends uncompressed audio when that path permits it. This lets a compatible receiver handle multichannel PCM or Dolby Atmos without forcing a lower common denominator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 is useful
Select Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 only when a television, soundbar or receiver cannot accept Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM but can decode Dolby Digital 5.1. Conversion is a compatibility fallback, not a general quality upgrade; it can remove formats your equipment could otherwise reproduce.
When Stereo Only is appropriate
Stereo Only is intended for a two-channel setup, such as a television or amplifier with no surround decoding. It prevents a stereo system from receiving multichannel information it cannot use. If you later add a surround receiver, return to Auto and let Apple TV renegotiate the available format.
Improve speech intelligibility
Apple’s audio controls include Enhance and Enhance More. Enhance makes dialogue more prominent with minimal effect on the original mix. Enhance More makes voices very prominent but can alter the balance of music and effects. Use the least aggressive setting that solves your listening problem, and turn it off when you want the unmodified mix.
Use preference and accessibility controls selectively
Reduce Loud Sounds
Reduce Loud Sounds is useful when late-night listening or household volume differences make explosions and music uncomfortably loud. It compresses the range between quiet and loud passages, so it is a listening preference rather than a fidelity setting. If you want the soundtrack’s original dynamics, leave it off.

Audio language and navigation sounds
Choose an Audio Language when you consistently prefer a particular available language. Navigation Clicks can be disabled if menu sounds are distracting. Availability depends on the content and connected equipment; changing these controls cannot add a language track or audio capability that the app does not provide.
Dialogue enhancement versus receiver processing
If your receiver or soundbar already applies a voice mode, test it against Apple TV’s Enhance setting rather than stacking both immediately. Two speech-processing systems can make voices unnaturally thin or loud. Keep the control that gives clear speech with the fewest changes to the rest of the soundtrack.
Calibrate only when a specific problem calls for it
Color Balance
Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration > Color Balance uses a compatible iPhone to adjust Apple TV’s output. It is intended to correct a visible color cast, not to replace a professional display calibration. Follow the on-screen prompts in a room with the lighting you normally use, and remember that the result changes Apple TV’s output rather than the television’s underlying picture mode.
Zoom and Overscan
Use Zoom and Overscan when the picture is cropped, stretched or surrounded by unwanted borders. Overscan controls can trade edge cropping for a smaller visible image, so first check the television’s own aspect-ratio or picture-size mode. Apple’s video guide lists the controls available for your model and selected format.
Color Bars
Color Bars provides a reference pattern for adjusting the television’s picture controls. Make changes on the television while viewing the pattern, then exit the test. This is a targeted adjustment tool; it is not required for a normal installation.

Wireless Audio Sync
If wired speakers and wireless speakers do not play together, open Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration > Wireless Audio Sync. Apple TV uses an iPhone to measure timing and compensate for the delay. Repeat the process if you move the speakers, change the television, or alter the audio path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix missing or unstable 4K and HDR
When the Apple TV reports a lower resolution, HDR is unavailable, or the picture repeatedly drops out, troubleshoot the entire signal path rather than replacing a cable immediately.
- Verify the television input. Some televisions support HDR only on specific HDMI ports. Check the television manual and move Apple TV to an input documented for 4K and HDR if necessary.
- Enable the television’s enhanced HDMI mode. Manufacturers may label this Enhanced Format, UHD Color, Deep Color or HDR mode. The label varies, so use the television’s manual.
- Check every cable and intermediate device. The cable between Apple TV and a receiver, and the cable between the receiver and television, must both support the desired signal. For HDR-capable 4K connections, Apple calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and names the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as one tested example (Apple’s 4K/HDR troubleshooting guide). Do not buy a new cable until you have confirmed that the existing cable or another link is the fault.
- Run Check HDMI Connection. Find it in Settings > Video and Audio. The test can identify a link that cannot maintain the selected format.
- Bypass the receiver, switch or splitter. Connect Apple TV directly to the television. If 4K or HDR works direct, the removed device or one of its cables is limiting the handshake. If it still fails, investigate the television input, Apple TV format and direct cable.
- Retest the format. After correcting the path, return to Video and Audio, select a supported format and use the built-in test before enabling matching options again.
Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup guide also covers connection requirements. A direct connection is a diagnostic step; it is not necessarily the best permanent arrangement if your receiver is confirmed to pass the required formats.
Account for Apple TV generation and regional differences
Menus are not identical across Apple TV 4K generations or tvOS versions. Apple’s video guide lists Aspect Ratio for playback only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), while the setup guide says that generation supports HDR10+. Other options can disappear or change when you alter the selected format, aspect ratio or connected display.
Not every feature or item of content is available in every country or on every hardware model. Before treating an absent control as a defect, identify the exact Apple TV model in Settings > General > About, note the tvOS version, and compare the television’s supported inputs with Apple’s current video settings documentation. An option shown in a guide may legitimately be unavailable in your region or connection.
A practical decision guide
| Setting | Change first? | Use it when | Leave it alone when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video format | Yes—choose a supported format | Your display’s documented resolution or HDR mode is known | You would be selecting an unverified mode just because it is listed |
| Match Dynamic Range | Usually yes | You want compatible titles shown in their mastered range | Mode switching causes unacceptable blanking in your setup |
| Match Frame Rate | Usually yes | You want films and shows presented at their source rate | Your display or app behaves poorly during rate changes |
| Audio Format: Auto | Yes | Your receiver or television supports the formats it advertises | You have confirmed a device requires a fallback |
| Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 | No | Equipment cannot accept Atmos or multichannel PCM | Your system supports the automatic formats |
| Stereo Only | No | You have a two-channel audio system | You use a surround receiver or Atmos system |
| Enhance / Enhance More | No | Dialogue is difficult to understand | You want the original soundtrack balance |
| Color Balance, Overscan, Wireless Audio Sync | No | You see a color cast, cropping or timing mismatch | The picture and sound already align correctly |
This approach separates three decisions: picture fidelity through range and frame-rate matching, signal compatibility through format and HDMI choices, and sound compatibility or intelligibility through Auto, fallbacks and dialogue controls.
