The right Apple Pencil depends on which iPad mini you own. The current iPad mini (A17 Pro) works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); the iPad mini (6th generation) works with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C); and the iPad mini (5th generation) works with Apple Pencil (1st generation). Apple does not list the first-generation Pencil for either newer mini, or the second-generation and Pro models for the fifth-generation mini.
Before buying, identify the exact iPad mini model in Settings > General > About > Model Name. Then use the matching section below. A Pencil that looks suitable can still be incompatible if it belongs to a different generation.
Apple Pencil compatibility by iPad mini model
This is the complete compatibility map for the iPad mini models covered by Apple’s compatibility information:
| iPad mini model | Compatible Apple Pencil models | Models not listed as compatible |
|---|---|---|
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) | Apple Pencil Pro; Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Apple Pencil (1st generation); Apple Pencil (2nd generation) |
| iPad mini (6th generation) | Apple Pencil (2nd generation); Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Apple Pencil (1st generation); Apple Pencil Pro |
| iPad mini (5th generation) | Apple Pencil (1st generation) | Apple Pencil (2nd generation); Apple Pencil Pro; Apple Pencil (USB-C) |
The USB-C Pencil is the only single model in this list that works with both the A17 Pro mini and the sixth-generation mini. It is not a substitute for the first-generation Pencil on the fifth-generation mini.

How to identify your iPad mini before ordering
Model names can be easy to confuse, especially when a listing says only “iPad mini.” Apple provides a direct way to check the name stored on the tablet:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Read the value beside Model Name.
Use the full wording shown there, such as “iPad mini (A17 Pro),” “iPad mini (6th generation),” or “iPad mini (5th generation),” rather than relying on screen size, color, storage capacity, or the year you purchased it. Once the model name is confirmed, match it to the compatibility table.
If you have the iPad mini (A17 Pro)
The A17 Pro model has two compatible choices: Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Both are intended for precise input, support low-latency writing, and recognize the angle of the Pencil through tilt sensitivity. The meaningful difference is the set of creative controls and the way the Pencil charges.

Apple Pencil Pro adds pressure sensitivity, so the mark can respond to how firmly you press when an app supports pressure-aware tools. Apple also lists several controls and feedback features that are specific to Pro:
- Wireless pairing and magnetic charging on the iPad.
- Double-tap tool switching.
- Squeeze controls.
- Barrel roll for controlling supported shaped tools.
- Haptic feedback.
- Find My support.
These features matter most to illustrators, designers, note-takers who switch tools frequently, and anyone who wants the Pencil to recharge while attached to the tablet. Apple Pencil Pro requires iPadOS 17.5 or later on the compatible iPad.
Choose Apple Pencil (USB-C) for writing and markup
Apple Pencil (USB-C) covers the core tasks many mini owners need: handwriting, sketching, selecting objects, and marking up documents. It supports precision, low latency, and tilt sensitivity. It does not provide pressure sensitivity, and it does not include the Pro-only controls and feedback listed above.

The USB-C model pairs and charges with a USB-C cable. Its magnetic connection to the iPad is for storage, not wireless charging. Apple lists iPadOS 17.1.1 or later as the system requirement. If you mainly annotate PDFs, write in notes, or make simple sketches, the cable-based charging arrangement may be all you need.

| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-sensitive brushes or variable-width strokes | Apple Pencil Pro | Pro adds pressure sensitivity; USB-C does not. |
| Wireless pairing and charging | Apple Pencil Pro | Pro pairs and charges magnetically on the iPad. |
| Double-tap, squeeze, barrel roll, haptics, or Find My | Apple Pencil Pro | These are listed Pro features. |
| Writing, basic sketching, and document markup | Apple Pencil (USB-C) | It provides precision, low latency, and tilt sensitivity. |
| Lowest feature complexity | Apple Pencil (USB-C) | It omits pressure and the additional Pro controls. |
If you have the iPad mini (6th generation)
The sixth-generation mini is compatible with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple Pencil Pro is not listed for this model, so buying Pro because it works with the newer A17 Pro mini will not make it compatible with a sixth-generation mini.
Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
The second-generation Pencil is the generation-specific option Apple lists for the sixth-generation mini. It is the choice to investigate when you want the Pencil model associated with that iPad generation rather than the newer USB-C model. Confirm the iPad’s model name before purchase, because the same tablet family also includes models with different Pencil requirements.
Apple Pencil (USB-C)
The USB-C model is also compatible with the sixth-generation mini. Its behavior is the same as on the A17 Pro model: it offers precision, low latency, and tilt sensitivity; it pairs and charges through a USB-C cable; and its magnetic attachment is for storage. It does not gain pressure sensitivity or Pro controls merely because it is being used with a sixth-generation mini.
If you have the iPad mini (5th generation)
Apple lists only Apple Pencil (1st generation) for the fifth-generation mini. The second-generation Pencil, Apple Pencil Pro, and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are not listed as compatible with this model.
This is the most important case for avoiding a mistaken upgrade. A fifth-generation mini may still be in excellent condition, but its Pencil requirement is different from both newer mini generations. Match the exact generation shown in Settings before ordering a replacement or buying a Pencil advertised for “iPad mini.”

Charging and pairing differences
The Pencil name alone does not tell you how it will charge. The charging method is a practical part of the compatibility decision:
| Pencil | Pairing and charging method covered by the specifications | Magnetic attachment |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pencil Pro | Wireless pairing and magnetic charging on a compatible iPad | Used for pairing, charging, and attachment |
| Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Pairs and charges via a USB-C cable | Storage only; it does not wirelessly charge |
| Apple Pencil (2nd generation) | Compatible with iPad mini (6th generation) | Charging details are not specified in the supplied compatibility information |
| Apple Pencil (1st generation) | Compatible with iPad mini (5th generation) | Charging details are not specified in the supplied compatibility information |
Apple describes the USB-C model this way: “Apple Pencil (USB-C) pairs and charges via a USB-C Charge Cable.” Keep a suitable USB-C cable available if you choose that model; attaching it to the side of the iPad stores the Pencil but does not recharge it.
Check the iPadOS requirement before pairing
For the two Pencil models whose current requirements are specified, the operating-system minimums are:

|---|---|---|
| Apple Pencil Pro | iPad mini (A17 Pro) | iPadOS 17.5 or later |
| Apple Pencil (USB-C) | iPad mini (A17 Pro); iPad mini (6th generation) | iPadOS 17.1.1 or later |
If your hardware match is correct but pairing does not begin, check the iPadOS version next. The requirement is a minimum, so an iPad running a later compatible release meets that part of the setup condition. The supplied Apple specifications do not state a minimum iPadOS version for the first- or second-generation Pencil in this mini compatibility list.
A practical buying workflow
- Read Model Name: Go to Settings > General > About > Model Name.
- Locate the exact generation: Distinguish A17 Pro, sixth generation, and fifth generation; do not use “iPad mini” as the complete model description.
- Filter to the listed models: Use the compatibility table and remove every Pencil not listed for that generation.
- Choose features only after compatibility: On A17 Pro, decide between Pro controls and the USB-C model’s core writing and sketching feature set. On sixth generation, decide between the listed second-generation and USB-C options. On fifth generation, use the listed first-generation model.
- Check software: If selecting Pro or USB-C, verify the relevant iPadOS minimum before trying to pair.
- Plan charging: Expect magnetic charging with Pro and USB-C-cable charging with the USB-C model. Do not assume magnetic storage means magnetic charging.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by iPad size alone
“Mini” identifies a family, not one accessory standard. The fifth-, sixth-, and A17 Pro generations do not share the same complete Pencil lineup. Always read Model Name first.
Assuming newer means universally compatible
Apple Pencil Pro is newer than the other choices in this guide, but Apple lists it only for the A17 Pro mini among these models. Newer hardware does not automatically work with every earlier iPad mini.

- WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)
Confusing magnetic storage with charging
The USB-C Pencil can attach magnetically to a compatible mini, but that attachment stores the Pencil. Charging and pairing use a USB-C cable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Expecting pressure sensitivity from the USB-C model
Apple’s feature comparison distinguishes the USB-C model from Pro by omitting pressure sensitivity and Pro-only controls. Tilt sensitivity is not the same as pressure sensitivity: changing the angle can affect supported marks, while pressing harder does not provide the Pro pressure response.
Ordering before checking the operating system
Even a hardware-compatible combination can require an iPadOS update. Pro needs iPadOS 17.5 or later, while USB-C needs iPadOS 17.1.1 or later according to Apple’s specifications.
