Facebook’s mobile app was the app that passed 100 million downloads through GetJar, according to the app store’s November 2010 announcement. The milestone counted downloads through GetJar—not 100 million verified, unique people.
What did GetJar’s 100 million milestone mean?
TechCrunch reported on November 22, 2010, that Facebook’s mobile applications had been downloaded more than 100 million times through GetJar. The report said this was seven months after the earlier 50-million-download mark and described Facebook as the most downloaded mobile application through a single app store at the time. TechCrunch’s November 2010 report and HotHardware’s contemporary coverage attribute the milestone to GetJar.
“Downloads” is the important distinction: the reports do not establish that the figure represented 100 million different people, nor do they specify that every download was the same app version.
How did GetJar distribute Facebook’s app across phones?
GetJar tied the milestone to App It!, a cross-platform linking service. A publisher could share an App It! URL on a website or elsewhere. When someone opened the link on a phone, it led to the app’s GetJar page, where the service detected the device and offered a suitable download. TechCrunch said apps uploaded to GetJar automatically received an App It! URL.

GetJar’s reproduced announcement listed Fandango, Photobucket, Yahoo!, MocoSpace, OpenTable, Flirtomatic and Cnectd among brands using App It! at the time. That is a list from the 2010 announcement, not evidence of current partnerships. HotHardware reproduced the announcement.
What phones and platforms accounted for the downloads?
GetJar said more than 50 percent of the reported Facebook downloads went to Nokia phones, while Android was its fastest-growing platform. These are GetJar’s claims about its 2010 distribution, not current platform or market data. The “more than 50 percent” figure is a threshold, not an exact share, so it does not support calculating a precise Nokia download count. MediaPost’s contemporary coverage reported the platform details.

- Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don’t have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you’re moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don’t miss a moment
- Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided
- Connect with friends, even if they don't have Portal: Easily call friends and family on Messenger — calls can be made seamlessly to and from smartphones and tablets. And you can bring up to six other people into a group call
- Alexa built-in: Portal has Alexa built-in, so you can ask a question, set a timer, add items to your shopping list, control your smart home or more. Just ask
- Experience more together: With Portal, story time will never be the same. With music, animation and augmented reality effects, Portal lets you become some of your children’s favorite characters as you read along to well-loved stories. And if friends or family also have Portal, you can listen to your favorite music together as if you were in the same room, without delays or feedback
How large was GetJar at the time?
TechCrunch reported GetJar’s contemporary figures as more than 1 billion downloads to date, a library of around 75,000 apps and more than 3 million downloads per day in November 2010. These were figures attributed to GetJar in that period, not present-day totals. TechCrunch reported the scale figures.
A large catalog did not mean every app worked on every phone. MediaPost noted that availability depended on the handset model; the App It! flow’s device detection and suitable-download routing addressed the differences among devices, but did not make the entire catalog universal. MediaPost discussed handset-specific availability.

What GetJar said the milestone represented
Patrick Mork, then GetJar’s chief marketing officer, said: “We’re proud to have helped bring the Facebook mobile experience to tens of millions of people regardless of their mobile platform, phone model or carrier.” The statement expresses GetJar’s cross-platform pitch; it is an executive’s characterization, not an independently measured unique-user count. HotHardware quoted Mork’s statement.
