Many AM5 motherboards support the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but the minimum BIOS depends on the exact motherboard model and, on some products, its hardware revision. Check the manufacturer’s CPU support page for your board, confirm that it lists the 9800X3D, and use the BIOS version shown there—not a version inferred from the AM5 socket or chipset.
How to check whether your AM5 motherboard supports the 9800X3D
- Identify the exact board. Read the full model name from the board itself or its product listing. Include the hardware revision if the manufacturer distinguishes revisions.
- Open the manufacturer’s page for that exact board. Find its CPU support or compatibility list. MSI, for example, directs users to the product’s Support section, then Compatibility, then CPU Support (MSI CPU compatibility guidance).
- Find “Ryzen 7 9800X3D.” Confirm it is listed and note the minimum BIOS version exactly as displayed. If the entry says “all,” as the ASUS example below does, preserve that wording rather than assuming a version number.
- Compare the requirement with the installed BIOS. If the installed version is older than the listed minimum, update before expecting the board to boot with the processor.
- Check the board’s update instructions. Use the manual or manufacturer support page to determine the procedure and whether the board can update without a recognized CPU. Feature names and steps vary by model.
AMD says, “A BIOS update may be needed when a motherboard does not already support a newer AMD Ryzen™ desktop processor,” and advises checking the motherboard brand’s support website for the required version (AMD BIOS Updates FAQ).
Example BIOS requirements listed by manufacturers
These are examples from official support listings, not a complete catalog of AM5 boards. BIOS listings can change, so check the current page for the exact model and revision before buying or updating.
| Motherboard | 9800X3D BIOS entry | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| ASRock X870E Taichi OCF | 0.20 | ASRock AM5 CPU support listing |
| ASRock X870E Taichi; X870E Taichi Lite; X870E Nova WiFi; X870 Steel Legend WiFi; X870 Pro RS WiFi; X870 Pro RS; X870 Riptide WiFi | 3.10 | ASRock AM5 CPU support listing |
| ASRock X870 Taichi Creator; X870 Nova WiFi | 3.30 | ASRock AM5 CPU support listing |
| ASRock X870 Pro-A WiFi | 3.25 | ASRock AM5 CPU support listing |
| ASRock X870 LiveMixer WiFi | 3.31 | ASRock AM5 CPU support listing |
| ASRock X870E Challenger WiFi; X870E Challenger WiFi White | 4.10 | ASRock AM5 CPU support listing |
| ASUS TUF GAMING X870E-PLUS WIFI7 | “all” | ASUS CPU support page; applies to this model only |
ASRock’s published values show why there is no single BIOS number for “AM5”: requirements differ even among X870-series models. Consult the ASRock AM5 CPU support list for the current entries. ASUS lists the processor as supported since BIOS “all” on the TUF GAMING X870E-PLUS WIFI7 CPU support page; that listing should not be generalized to other ASUS boards.

Will a B650 motherboard work?
The chipset name alone does not answer the question. Check the CPU support list for your exact B650 board and hardware revision, then confirm its stated BIOS requirement. GIGABYTE, for example, provides CPU and BIOS information on its model-specific B650 EAGLE AX revision 1.0/1.1 support page. Do not use a related board’s listing or another revision’s minimum as a substitute.
What to do if the BIOS is too old
Use the manufacturer’s documented update procedure for your specific board. Some boards may offer a way to update firmware without a recognized CPU; others require a different supported setup. Do not assume the board has this feature, or that a USB drive alone enables it: the motherboard must support the required update method, and the manual’s directions determine what media and steps to use.

If you are buying a new board, do not assume its shipped firmware meets the 9800X3D requirement. Ask the seller about the installed BIOS or choose a board whose documented update method fits your situation. After confirming CPU support, follow the manufacturer’s current stable-firmware guidance and review release notes for relevant compatibility or stability changes.
Choosing between compatible boards
Once a board’s CPU support and minimum BIOS are confirmed, compare the factors that matter to your build:

- Whether the exact model and revision list the 9800X3D, and the minimum BIOS stated.
- Whether the board has a documented update method you can use if its shipped BIOS is too old.
- Whether its form factor, expansion, connectivity, and other features suit your system.
These compatibility listings establish CPU support and firmware requirements; they do not provide a basis for ranking board quality or reliability.
