For most people who want in-ear AirPods, AirPods Pro 3 are the strongest pick: What Hi-Fi? ranks them its best in-ear choice, and RTINGS finds their noise cancelling and silicone-tip fit more useful in noisy settings than AirPods 4. Choose AirPods 4 with ANC instead if you prefer an open fit without silicone tips. If you want headphones that cover your ears, look at the AirPods Max line—but the available reviews do not establish a tested rating for the 2026 AirPods Max 2.
Which AirPods suit your preferences?
| Model | Wearing style | Best suited to | Independent review evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear, with silicone tips | Listeners seeking a secure seal and stronger noise isolation | What Hi-Fi? ranks them its best in-ear AirPods; RTINGS compares them directly with AirPods 4. |
| AirPods 4 with ANC | Open-fit earbuds, without silicone tips | Listeners who dislike silicone tips but want noise cancelling | What Hi-Fi? reviews the ANC and features, and compares them with Pro 3. |
| AirPods Max / AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear headphones | Listeners who prefer headphones that sit over the ears | Apple lists both models; the cited independent ranking does not establish a tested rating for Max 2. |
| AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2 | Apple comparison page lists these models | Consider only after checking the exact model and local availability | The sources here do not provide comparable independent test findings for these models. |
Apple’s comparison page lists AirPods 5, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Max, and AirPods Max 2. Apple Support says AirPods 5 and AirPods Max 2 were introduced in 2026, AirPods 4 in 2024, and AirPods Pro 3 in 2025. A model appearing on Apple’s comparison page does not by itself confirm it is available in every market. Apple’s AirPods comparison and Apple’s model-identification and introduction-year guide are useful for checking the exact generation.
AirPods Pro 3: the best-supported in-ear pick
What Hi-Fi?’s June 2026 buying guide names AirPods Pro 3 its best overall in-ear AirPods choice, praising sound, noise cancellation, and the Apple experience. That is the guide’s judgment, not a guarantee that they will suit every listener. Its review also warns that the fit is not universal.
RTINGS’ comparison says Pro 3’s noise cancelling makes them more versatile in noisy places than AirPods 4, while the silicone tips offer a more secure fit than AirPods 4’s one-size-fits-most open design. The trade-off is straightforward: a silicone-tip seal can help with isolation and stability, but only if the shape and size feel comfortable in your ears. If possible, check the fit and return terms before committing. RTINGS’ AirPods Pro 3 versus AirPods 4 comparison was updated in August 2026.

AirPods 4 with ANC: an open-fit alternative
AirPods 4 with ANC are the choice to consider if you want noise cancelling but do not want silicone tips. What Hi-Fi? describes their ANC as impressive for an open design and their feature set as broad. However, the open fit will not suit every ear, and the review flags battery life as a weakness compared with competitors.
Because they do not seal the ear canal with silicone tips, AirPods 4 and Pro 3 have different fit and isolation characteristics; ANC does not make the open-fit model equivalent to a sealed in-ear design. What Hi-Fi?’s comparison favors Pro 3 for listeners who need stronger isolation and longer ANC listening per charge. Read What Hi-Fi?’s comparison of AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 3.

Battery life with ANC on
| Model | Per charge, ANC enabled | With charging case | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 with ANC | Up to 4 hours | Up to 30 hours | What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 review-reported figures. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Up to 8 hours | Up to 24 hours | What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 comparison-reported figures. |
These figures make the distinction easy to miss: Pro 3 is reported to last longer on a single charge with ANC enabled, while AirPods 4 with ANC are reported to offer a higher total when the case is included. They are published figures, not guaranteed results for every user. Apple says battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors; consult its comparison page and testing-condition notes when interpreting specifications.
What about AirPods Max and the newest models?
AirPods Max are the over-ear branch of Apple’s lineup, for people who prefer headphones over earbuds. Apple’s comparison page also lists AirPods Max 2, introduced in 2026, but the cited What Hi-Fi? ranking does not establish an independent tested rating for that generation. Do not treat a ranking for other AirPods as a verdict on Max 2.

The same caution applies to AirPods 5: Apple identifies the model as introduced in 2026, but the independent review evidence cited here does not establish a comparable test result for it. Check the precise model, features, and local availability rather than assuming that newer automatically means better for your needs.

AirPods prices and promotions change by country and retailer. Tom’s Guide reported a US offer of $179 on October 4, 2026, and noted a previous low of $169. Those are dated deal observations, not a standard price or a promise that either offer remains available. Compare the current price in your market before buying.
