For iPhone users who want noise cancellation as well as call features, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are a defensible pick. Apple lists Voice Isolation and dual beamforming microphones; independent testing found the recorded voice understandable, though somewhat boxy and thin. Apple’s U.S. store listing surfaced at $179 for this model—not $149—so check the exact model and current seller price before buying.
Which AirPods are best for phone calls?
Choose based on fit and the setting where you take calls, not on an unpublished microphone score. AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) both have Voice Isolation and dual beamforming microphones, according to Apple’s AirPods 4 specifications. The ANC model is the more suitable of those two if you also want active noise cancellation for listening; ANC is not, by itself, proof that callers will hear you more clearly.
Apple also lists Voice Isolation and dual beamforming microphones for AirPods Pro 3. The available evidence does not establish a fair microphone head-to-head between Pro 3 and AirPods 4 ANC, so there is no supported basis here for naming a universal best AirPods microphone.
Are AirPods 4 good for calls?
They have call-focused features, but call quality depends on the device, software, voice, and surroundings. Apple says Voice Isolation can enhance voice quality and remove background noise such as wind for the listener when using AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3 during calls on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Do AirPods block background noise on calls?
Voice Isolation is the relevant feature for reducing background noise heard by the person on the other end of a call. Apple says it can remove background noise such as wind for the listener on compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac calls. That is distinct from the ANC feature, which reduces noise reaching the wearer while listening. Don’t assume that ANC automatically improves the microphone signal sent to the other person.

What does the $149 price refer to?
The surfaced Apple U.S. store listing showed AirPods 4 at $129 and AirPods 4 with ANC at $179. Those are listed prices from a result accessed October 7, 2026—not guaranteed checkout prices—and they do not substantiate a $149 price for either model. A separate September 2026 result associated $149 with an AirPods 5 wireless-charging-case version, but the exact offer was not verified with an Apple or retailer listing. How to choose for your calls
- Decide whether you want an open fit or silicone tips. Comfort and how securely the earbuds sit matter for long calls.
- Separate listening needs from microphone needs. If you want ANC or transparency while listening, consider those features independently from call performance.
- Check Voice Isolation compatibility. Apple’s guidance covers calls on iPhone, iPad, or Mac; verify that your devices and software support the feature.
- Think about your usual environment. A review recording cannot guarantee performance in your specific room, commute, or wind conditions.
- Compare the exact live offer. Confirm model, seller, region, and case version rather than relying on an unverified $149 figure.
What is the one number Apple never publishes?
Apple does not publish a standardized numeric AirPods call-quality or microphone score in the official product, specifications, and support materials reviewed. There is therefore no official score to use for ranking these models, and no defensible decibel figure to supply. Apple’s feature descriptions and independent listening tests answer different questions: the former describe functions, while the latter report results under a particular reviewer’s test conditions.
