There is no single best AI tool for a research paper in 2026 because Bibby AI, Anara, Underleaf and Overleaf solve different bottlenecks. Choose Anara when your main problem is finding and synthesizing evidence inside a research library; Underleaf when notes, scans, PDFs or Word files must become LaTeX; Bibby AI when you want an AI assistant inside a LaTeX-focused editor; and Overleaf when your manuscript already lives in its LaTeX editor and you want contextual help with code, language and document components.
This is a feature-and-workflow comparison of the providers’ published descriptions and prices, not an independent accuracy or speed test. None of the available evidence proves that one service writes better papers, saves a specific amount of time or produces more reliable citations than the others. Your final choice should follow the stage at which your workflow is blocked, then be verified with a small sample of your own sources and equations.
The short answer: match the tool to your research-paper bottleneck
| Service | Primary workspace | Best fit | Distinctive capabilities described by the provider | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anara | Research library and reading workspace | Grounding questions and draft sections in your own papers, notes and documents | Answers linked to passages in uploaded documents; asking questions, requesting draft sections and explaining research material | It is not presented primarily as a LaTeX editor. Check every generated claim against the linked passage. |
| Underleaf | Conversion and academic-writing workspace | Turning handwritten notes, photos, PDFs, Word files, equations, tables or spreadsheets into LaTeX | Document conversion, writing assistance, citation lookup and a Chrome extension | Exact credit and page limits vary by plan and should be checked on the current pricing page. |
| Bibby AI | Research-focused LaTeX editor | Drafting and revising a paper while working directly with LaTeX | Bibby Chat, smart citation search, table and equation generation, paper review, abstract and literature-review help, research assistance and LaTeX error detection | Published prices and allowances are vendor-listed and can change; no independent performance comparison was established. |
| Overleaf | LaTeX editor with AI functions | Getting contextual help with an existing LaTeX manuscript | Table and equation generation, TeXGPT help for code and writing, LaTeX error assistance, research-tailored language feedback, paraphrasing and contextual editing | The available material does not establish current prices, exact AI limits or comparable collaboration tiers. |
The services therefore should not be treated as four interchangeable “paper writers.” Anara starts with source material, Underleaf starts with document conversion, and Bibby AI and Overleaf start inside a LaTeX editing workflow.

A research paper has several separate jobs: locating and understanding literature, keeping claims tied to evidence, drafting prose, formatting equations and tables, managing citations, compiling LaTeX and collaborating with coauthors. An AI feature can help with one of those jobs without being suitable for the others.
#1 Best Overall
Source-grounded synthesis
A source-grounded workflow begins with documents in a library. You ask what a set of papers says, request a proposed section or ask for an explanation of a difficult result. Anara’s help documentation says answers link to passages in the documents in your library, which gives you a place to inspect the support for a generated statement. The link is useful evidence, not a substitute for reading the cited passage and the original paper.
Drafting and revising in LaTeX
An editor-native assistant can suggest prose, equations, tables, citations or corrections while you work in the manuscript. Bibby AI describes this combination through Bibby Chat, smart citation search, generation tools, paper review and LaTeX error detection. Overleaf describes a similar editor context through TeXGPT, equation and table generation, language feedback, paraphrasing and contextual editing. Their pages do not provide an independent head-to-head test of factuality, citation quality or compilation success.
Converting existing material
Conversion is a different problem from generating a paragraph. Underleaf explicitly describes converting handwritten notes, photographs, PDFs, Word documents, equations, tables and spreadsheets into LaTeX. That is particularly relevant when the source of your draft is not already a structured TeX file. Conversion still requires visual and mathematical checking: a document can look plausible while containing a missing symbol, incorrect superscript or damaged table structure.

Anara: strongest when your evidence library is the center of the job
Anara describes itself as a workspace for reading, annotating, organizing and writing from a library of research material. Its writing guidance says you can ask questions, request draft sections or ask the assistant to explain material from that library. The help center also says answers link to passages in your documents. This makes Anara the clearest fit of the four when your first question is, “What do these sources actually support?” rather than, “How do I fix this LaTeX environment?”
A practical Anara workflow
- Build a focused library. Add the papers, reports or notes relevant to one research question instead of mixing unrelated projects.
- Ask narrow evidence questions. Request definitions, competing findings, methods or limitations for a clearly bounded group of documents.
- Inspect the linked passages. Open the source locations behind each important answer. Confirm that the passage supports the strength and scope of the proposed claim.
- Request a draft section with constraints. Specify the research question, desired structure and which documents may be used. Treat the result as an outline or first draft.
- Write the final argument yourself. Preserve the exact meaning of the source, add the citation format required by your venue and check the original publication.
Anara is therefore useful for synthesis and explanation, but a source link does not guarantee that the generated interpretation is correct. Check sample size, population, dates, confidence intervals, definitions and whether a result is correlational or causal before incorporating it into a paper.

Underleaf: the conversion-first option for notes, scans and mixed documents
Underleaf’s defining angle is moving material into LaTeX. Its product page lists conversion for handwritten notes, photos, PDFs, Word documents, equations, tables and spreadsheets, alongside writing assistance, citation lookup and a Chrome extension. If you have a photographed derivation or a Word draft that must become a journal-ready TeX manuscript, this is the most directly aligned description among the four services.
Where Underleaf fits in a paper workflow
- Prepare the input. Use the clearest scan or source file available. Crop unrelated margins and ensure equations and table borders are legible.
- Convert a small representative sample first. Include prose, a multi-line equation, a table and at least one citation so you can see how the service handles each element.
- Inspect the generated LaTeX and the rendered output. Look for lost symbols, changed minus signs, incorrect subscripts, column shifts, broken references and unescaped special characters.
- Correct structure before polishing prose. Fix environments, labels, bibliography keys and section hierarchy before asking an AI assistant to rewrite sentences.
- Compile in the destination environment. A file that converts successfully may still fail with your journal class, bibliography engine or package set.
Underleaf lists 10 free credits per month, Essentials at $6 per month on annual billing and Pro at $12 per month on annual billing. The page describes different credit and page-conversion limits for the paid tiers, but the exact allowance should be read from the live plan display before purchase. The same page reports more than 50,000 academic users, more than 240,000 pages converted and “98%+” math accuracy. Those are vendor marketing figures; no independent audit, measurement method or publication year was established, so they should not be used as comparative performance statistics.
Underleaf also says submitted content is transferred over encrypted connections and is not stored permanently. That is a provider statement, not an independent security audit. Review the current privacy policy and your institution’s rules before uploading unpublished results, confidential data or material covered by a publisher agreement.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bibby AI: a LaTeX-native assistant for drafting, citations and review
Bibby AI presents itself as a research-focused AI LaTeX editor. Its feature page lists Bibby Chat, smart citation search, table and equation generation, paper review, abstract and literature-review support, research assistance and LaTeX error detection. That combination is most relevant when your manuscript is already being written in LaTeX and you want assistance without moving to a separate general-purpose editor.
Tasks Bibby AI describes
- Use Bibby Chat to ask questions while working on the manuscript.
- Search for citations with the smart citation feature, then verify that each reference actually supports the sentence.
- Generate or revise tables and equations, checking notation and formatting against your field’s conventions.
- Request help with an abstract or literature-review section, then compare every claim with the underlying papers.
- Use paper-review and LaTeX-error functions to identify issues, while still compiling and proofreading the result yourself.
Bibby’s pricing page lists a free plan with a small project, compile and AI-completion allowance, and a Pro tier displayed at $16 per month. The page also shows a crossed-out price and billing terms that should be checked at publication or signup; the displayed amount should not be treated as a permanent global price. Bibby states that research is not used to train models. That is the company’s policy claim, so institutions handling sensitive work should compare it with their own retention, processing and contractual requirements.

Overleaf: AI assistance inside an established LaTeX editor
Overleaf’s AI features page lists LaTeX table and equation generation, TeXGPT help for code and writing, LaTeX error assistance, research-tailored language feedback, paraphrasing and contextual editing. This is a natural fit when your manuscript and collaboration process already use Overleaf and the immediate problem is an equation, a compilation error or a sentence that needs clearer academic language.

The page says an Overleaf plan increases AI allowance and provides access to premium features, but the available material does not establish current plan prices, exact AI limits or collaboration-tier differences. Do not rank Overleaf by price against the other services without checking a current official pricing page.

Feature comparison by the decisions researchers actually make
| Decision | Most directly aligned option | What the evidence supports | What remains unproven |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Can I ask questions about my own papers and see supporting passages?” | Anara | Anara describes answers linked to passages in the user’s documents. | That links alone guarantee complete retrieval or correct interpretation. |
| “Can I turn scans, photos or Word files into LaTeX?” | Underleaf | Underleaf explicitly lists those input types and LaTeX conversion. | A universal conversion accuracy rate under independently measured conditions. |
| “Can I generate equations, tables and paper sections in a LaTeX editor?” | Bibby AI or Overleaf | Both describe AI features in a LaTeX editing context; Bibby also lists citation search and paper review. | Which produces more accurate mathematics, prose or references. |
| “Can I get help with an existing Overleaf manuscript?” | Overleaf | Its page lists contextual editing, TeXGPT, language feedback and LaTeX error assistance. | Current plan limits, price and comparative quality. |
| “Which has the lowest disclosed paid entry price?” | Underleaf, among the figures listed here | Underleaf lists Essentials at $6 monthly on annual billing; Anara Plus lists $8 monthly yearly equivalent; Bibby Pro displays $16 monthly. | A fair total-cost ranking, because allowances, billing terms and Overleaf pricing are not comparable in the available material. |
Choose by workflow, not by the word “AI”
If your bottleneck is literature synthesis
Start with Anara’s library-centered workflow. Ask one question at a time, inspect linked passages and build your outline from verified findings. Move the resulting, checked prose into the LaTeX environment required by your venue. Do not assume that a source-grounded answer is ready to publish without reading the original study.
If your bottleneck is converting existing material
Try Underleaf with a small sample containing the hardest structures in your project. Compare the rendered result with the source before converting hundreds of pages. Conversion is valuable only if the resulting TeX is structurally correct and maintainable.
If your bottleneck is writing directly in LaTeX
Compare Bibby AI and Overleaf using the editor you intend to keep. Bibby’s published feature set emphasizes research assistance, citation search and paper review in a research-focused LaTeX editor. Overleaf’s page emphasizes TeXGPT, contextual editing, language feedback and LaTeX troubleshooting. The available evidence does not justify declaring either one more accurate.
Best Value
If your bottleneck is coauthor editing
Keep the manuscript in the environment your collaborators already use unless a migration solves a specific problem. The material available here does not establish directly comparable seat limits, permissions or collaboration pricing for all four services, so verify those details before changing a team workflow.
How to verify AI-generated research writing
AI assistance does not transfer authorship or responsibility for the paper’s claims. Use a repeatable review pass for every generated section:
- Trace each factual sentence. Open the cited paper or linked passage and confirm that it supports the sentence as written.
- Check qualifiers. Restore population, date, sample size, uncertainty, boundary conditions and whether the evidence is observational or experimental.
- Check references. Confirm author names, title, venue, year, DOI and bibliography key. Never keep a citation solely because it looks plausible.
- Check mathematics. Re-derive important equations, compare symbols with the notation defined in the paper and test dimensions or units where applicable.
- Compile and inspect. Resolve LaTeX errors and warnings, then review the PDF for missing references, overfull lines, damaged tables and incorrect figure placement.
- Check originality and policy. Follow your institution, funder, publisher and conference rules for AI assistance, disclosure and handling of unpublished material.
A fair 30-minute pilot before paying
Because no independent head-to-head evaluation is established, run your own bounded pilot rather than trusting a “faster” or “more accurate” marketing claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Select three representative source pages, one difficult equation, one table and a paragraph containing a nuanced claim.
- Give the same task and the same constraints to the service or services you are considering.
- Record whether the output cites the correct source, preserves qualifiers, keeps mathematical notation intact and compiles in your target template.
- Count corrections by type: factual, citation, language, LaTeX structure and visual rendering. This is your local observation, not a market benchmark.
- Review privacy, retention, institutional approval and billing terms before uploading the full project.
Prices, limits and privacy: what to check before subscribing
Subscription comparisons become misleading when a monthly price is shown without its billing condition or usage allowance. Recheck each provider’s live page for:
- Whether the displayed price requires annual billing.
- Credits, pages, compilations, AI completions or daily and weekly usage caps.
- What happens when an allowance is exhausted and whether unused usage rolls over.
- Model availability, OCR, database connections and cloud-productivity connectors included in your tier.
- Number of collaborators, project permissions and institutional or enterprise terms.
- Retention, deletion, training-use and data-processing language for unpublished research.
- Taxes, regional currency and the cancellation or renewal date shown at checkout.
Anara’s plan figures, Underleaf’s annual-billing prices and Bibby’s displayed Pro price are vendor-listed snapshots, not guaranteed future totals. Overleaf’s exact current price and limits were not established in the material used for this comparison, so it should not be placed in a price ranking without fresh verification.
What this comparison cannot prove
- No service was independently tested here for factual accuracy, citation completeness, mathematical correctness, compilation reliability or time saved.
- No independent, year-dated statistic establishes market adoption or comparative output quality among the four products.
- Underleaf’s user counts, page totals and “98%+” math-accuracy statement are vendor claims without an established independent audit or clear measurement method in the available material.
- Bibby’s researcher counts and speed or benchmark language should likewise be treated as marketing unless the underlying methods and data are independently reviewed.
- Feature pages can change. Confirm current limits, integrations, privacy terms and prices immediately before committing a project.
Final recommendation
Use Anara when evidence retrieval and source-linked synthesis are the central problem. Use Underleaf when the raw material is trapped in scans, photos, PDFs, Word files or other non-LaTeX formats. Choose Bibby AI for a research-focused LaTeX editing workflow with the feature set it lists. Choose Overleaf when contextual AI help belongs inside the LaTeX editor your manuscript already uses. In every case, treat generated text as a draft, verify the sources and mathematics, and make the final publication decision yourself.
