Meta AI requested the most dangerous Android permissions in Cybernews’s comparison of seven AI smart-glasses apps: 18, or 26% of the 70 permissions it requested. It also had the highest overall permission count. Those figures describe the apps assessed in Cybernews’s October 6, 2026 analysis; they do not show that Meta misused data or establish what current app versions request.
How Meta compares with the other apps
Cybernews published its comparison on October 6, 2026, using permission data from Exodus Privacy. The accessible article does not identify the exact app versions or the date of the Exodus data snapshot. It reports these permission counts:

Cybernews names external-storage reading, SMS access, and audio recording among Meta AI’s dangerous permissions. It does not provide a complete brand-by-brand permission table in the accessible article, so the other apps’ dangerous-permission counts cannot be compared here. These are counts of requested permissions, not a measure of how often the app used them.
What Android means by “dangerous permission”
Android uses “dangerous” for runtime permissions that grant access to restricted data or allow actions with a more substantial effect on the system or other apps. Android Developers explains that these permissions are requested at runtime and can involve private user data. The label describes the access category and the need for runtime consent; it is not a finding that an app abused that access.

For a user, the practical distinction is between an app declaring or requesting access and evidence of what it actually does with that access. Cybernews’s permission count alone does not establish that Meta AI—or any other app in the comparison—read messages, recorded audio, or misused personal data.
Permission totals are only one part of the privacy picture
Cybernews also compared trackers, recording-indicator behavior, AI processing, retention disclosures, and privacy documentation. These measures do not produce one reliable “safest app” ranking; they describe different questions about access, data handling, and transparency.

Detected trackers
Exodus Privacy data showed six detected trackers each for INMO Global and Solos AirGo, and none detected for Hi Rokid. Meta had one detected tracker, Facebook Flipper, which Cybernews describes as Meta’s own debugging tool rather than a third-party advertising or analytics SDK. “None detected” is an audit result, not proof that an app has no tracking.

Cybernews reports a confirmed response to covering the glasses’ capture LED only for Meta and Rokid. It says a Meta software update stops recording when the indicator is covered. That is a specific reported safeguard for recording behavior, not a resolution of other privacy concerns or a guarantee about every capture scenario.

Cloud processing and retention
In Cybernews’s analysis, all seven apps used cloud processing for AI features; none ran core features such as voice, translation, or image analysis locally on the glasses. Cybernews also reports that five brands did not specify a retention limit for the data types it assessed. Even Realities disclosed immediate deletion by default for captured voice, while Meta specified retention periods from 30 days to a year for some data. These statements concern the processing and data described in that analysis, not necessarily every feature or data category.
Privacy documentation
Cybernews found that Meta, Rokid, and Even Realities had privacy documents specifically for their glasses. INMO and Solos included a dedicated glasses section in a general company policy. RayNeo and Halliday relied on generic company-wide policies without a specific glasses mention. A glasses-specific document can make relevant practices easier to locate, but its presence alone does not establish that an app collects less data.

What the comparison does—and does not—show
Cybernews says its assessment used nine criteria drawn from public materials such as privacy policies, product pages, and independent reviews, scoring each from 0 (weak or no protection) to 2 (partial or strong protection). The accessible article does not supply the full brand-by-brand results for all criteria, the exact glasses models, or the app versions assessed. Treat the findings as a published comparison of the apps’ assessed configurations, not a live audit of current releases.
