For a frozen app, a black screen, or a quick lock, these five Windows shortcuts can get you to the next useful action. They do different jobs: none is a universal reset, and each depends on Windows still accepting keyboard input.
Which shortcut should you try first?
| Situation | Shortcut | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| An app is stuck, but Windows still responds | Ctrl + Shift + Esc | Opens Task Manager directly | It cannot help if Windows is not accepting input. |
| The display is blank or black | Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B | Attempts to wake the display or reset graphics-driver handling | It may help, but it is not a guaranteed repair. |
| You need account or security options | Ctrl + Alt + Delete | Opens the Windows security screen | Available actions depend on the device and account configuration. |
| You are stepping away from the computer | Windows key + L | Locks the computer | It secures the session; it does not fix a fault. |
| An active app is responding to input, or no windows are open | Alt + F4 | Closes the active item; with no open windows, prompts for shutdown | It is not a forced shutdown for a hung process. |
Microsoft documents these actions in its Windows keyboard shortcuts reference. Some shortcuts can vary by app or settings.
How do you open Task Manager with the keyboard?
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly. If an application is frozen but Windows remains responsive, you can use Task Manager to inspect it or try restarting it. This is a route to investigate a stuck app, not a guarantee that the computer will recover.

For a blank-screen problem, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes using Task Manager when a cursor is visible. If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, restarting it may restore the desktop. These steps require the computer to respond enough to show and operate Task Manager; they cannot help when the system is entirely unresponsive. See Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps.

What do you press when your Windows screen goes black?
Press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft lists it for waking a device when its screen is blank or black; its troubleshooting page describes the action as resetting the graphics driver. You may hear a beep or see the screen flicker, but the shortcut is an attempt, not a certain fix. If the display stays black, use the troubleshooting steps appropriate to what remains visible, such as a cursor.
How do you reach security options quickly?
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open the security screen. Microsoft lists options there for locking the PC, switching users, signing out, changing a password, and opening Task Manager. Which options appear can depend on your device and account setup. Use this when you need that menu; if you simply want to secure an unattended session, Windows key + L locks the computer directly.

When does Alt + F4 help—and when does it not?
Press Alt + F4 while the target window is active to close that app or item. The app must still receive keyboard input. If it is truly hung, Alt + F4 does not forcibly terminate its process; try Task Manager if Windows remains responsive. When no windows are open, the shortcut brings up the shutdown prompt, letting you choose a power action rather than immediately forcing one.
What if none of the shortcuts works?
If Windows will not accept input, keyboard shortcuts may not be available as a recovery route. Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) offers troubleshooting and recovery options. Microsoft documents opening Advanced startup from Settings, or holding Shift while selecting Power > Restart from the desktop or sign-in screen. Some computers also have manufacturer-specific recovery buttons or key combinations. See Microsoft’s guide to Windows Recovery Environment and its sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Read each screen carefully and preserve backups where possible before choosing an option that changes or removes files. Microsoft explains the trade-offs in its Windows recovery options guide.
