For a useful picture of the air in a room, place your indoor air quality monitor in a room people regularly use—such as a bedroom or living room—at breathing height, with clear airflow. For a typical adult, that is roughly 3–6 feet off the floor. Keep the monitor away from immediate pollutant sources, air-cleaner effects, open windows, doors, and heating or cooling vents. Follow the device manual, since placement depends on what its sensors measure.
Choose placement based on what you want to learn
First decide whether you want a representative reading for a commonly occupied room or want to observe changes linked to a particular activity or pollutant. A monitor near a source can help show a local change, but it may not reflect the air across the room or home. EPA’s siting guidance frames the choice as asking what you want to learn from the sensor: A Guide to Siting and Installing Air Sensors.
- For a general room reading: Use a room where occupants spend substantial time, such as a bedroom or living room, and position the monitor away from localized sources and drafts.
- For a specific activity: Choose a location suited to the question. Readings taken before, during, and after an activity such as cooking may show how the pollutant measured by that device changes. A nearby placement captures a more local effect, not a room-wide average.
How high should an air quality monitor be?
Place it near the breathing zone of the people whose exposure you want to understand. EPA guidance gives roughly 3–6 feet as a typical adult breathing-zone range, depending on whether the person is sitting or standing. EPA’s AirNow 2023 fact sheet also recommends placing an air sensor 3–6 feet off the ground: Where to Place an Air Sensor (EPA-452/F-23-004).

The sensor needs air to move freely around it. EPA says, “Sensors should have free air flow and not be placed behind furniture or tucked away in corners.” Keep the intake and outlet unobstructed; avoid furniture enclosures and any position against a wall that restricts airflow.

- Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
- Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
- Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
- Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
- Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.
- Cooking appliances, fireplaces, and stored cleaning products: Avoid placing the monitor immediately beside these sources when you want a representative room reading. A nearby reading may be useful for deliberately observing a source, but interpret it as local.
- Open windows and exterior doors: Outside air and drafts can make readings unrepresentative of typical indoor conditions.
- Heating and cooling vents: Supply or return airflow can bring rapid changes in temperature, humidity, or air composition.
- Air cleaners: Keep the sensor away from the cleaner’s intake or exhaust when you want a representative measure. EPA’s guide treats air cleaners as pollution sinks that can affect siting.
These placement recommendations come from EPA’s siting guide and its consumer guidance on low-cost air pollution monitors and indoor air quality. Device designs differ, so the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence where they specify a placement requirement.
What an indoor air quality monitor can—and cannot—tell you
A monitor detects only the pollutants or environmental factors its sensors are designed to measure. Depending on the device, these may include particulate matter, carbon dioxide, radon, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, temperature, or humidity; no single device should be assumed to measure all of them.

EPA cautions that low-cost monitors do not provide a complete representation of indoor air quality, and that indoor performance information is limited for some devices. A detected pollutant does not, by itself, establish that there is an indoor air problem or determine the health risk. If a reading or symptoms concern you, professional help may be appropriate in some cases; discuss health symptoms with a healthcare provider. See the EPA indoor monitor guidance.

When selecting or setting up a monitor, match its capabilities to the pollutant or environmental factor you want to observe. Confirm that it is intended for indoor use, check the manufacturer’s placement and power requirements, and look for available information about indoor performance. EPA notes that price alone does not necessarily indicate performance and that accuracy can vary among manufacturers and even within a product line.
