How to play
Read the numbers
Each number on a revealed cell tells you how many mines touch that cell, including diagonal neighbors. Use the count to work out which nearby covered cells are safe and which contain mines.

Flag suspected mines
Flags help mark cells you believe contain mines, but they are notes for your own play. The instructions on Play Minesweeper Online say you win by revealing every non-mine cell; every mine does not have to be flagged.
Use chording when the flags match
Play Minesweeper Online describes chording as opening adjacent covered cells after a number has the correct number of flags around it. Use it only when you are confident the flags are correctly placed: a mistaken flag can expose a mine.

Controls vary by site and device
On Play Minesweeper Online, the stated desktop controls are left-click to reveal and right-click to flag. On mobile, that site specifies tap to reveal and long-press to flag. Minesweeper.Free also describes a mobile flag button. If a control does not work as expected, check the selected game’s on-page instructions rather than assuming all versions use the same gestures.

What about Microsoft Minesweeper?
Microsoft Minesweeper is listed in the Xbox store as a Free+ game with in-game purchases and additional modes. It is an installed store game, so it does not meet the no-download requirement. The store listing attributes it to Xbox Game Studios and describes its aim: “Use logic and strategy to clear the board without triggering a mine.”
