You can play the original The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask on a Nintendo Switch-family console through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The separate Nintendo 3DS remake, Majora’s Mask 3D, is no longer available to buy digitally from the 3DS eShop, but physical game cards and redownloads of prior digital purchases remain options.
Can you play Majora’s Mask on Nintendo Switch?
Yes. Nintendo lists the original Nintendo 64 version of Majora’s Mask, first released in 2000, in its Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics collection for Nintendo Switch. To play, you need a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, a Nintendo Account, and the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app. This is access through a subscription, not a standalone Switch game purchase. Can you still buy Majora’s Mask 3D?
Majora’s Mask 3D is a separate remake for Nintendo 3DS-family systems, with refreshed visuals and features. Nintendo lists a physical Game Card release. Because new purchases in the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended on March 27, 2023, a physical copy is the practical route for a new purchase; availability, condition, and price depend on sellers. Can you redownload a 3DS copy you already bought?
Nintendo says previously purchased 3DS games can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. This applies to content already purchased on the relevant Nintendo Account; it does not reopen the eShop for new purchases. What happened to Wii U and 3DS eShop purchases?
Nintendo ended purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. That means neither eShop is a current route for buying a new digital copy. Nintendo also ended online play and related online-communication functions for Wii U and 3DS software on April 8, 2024; this is separate from the continued ability to redownload previously purchased content. The decision is between the original game accessed through a recurring subscription and the 3DS remake accessed with compatible hardware and a physical or previously purchased digital copy. There is no official source establishing current used-game pricing or guaranteed stock, so compare seller listings directly rather than assuming a particular price or availability.
