A laptop’s Wi-Fi card is an internal WLAN (wireless) module when the model has a separate, serviceable card. There is no universal place to look: its position and whether it can be replaced depend on the exact laptop model. Find the manufacturer’s service manual for your full model number, then search for “WLAN,” “wireless card” or “wireless module” and follow its diagram and procedure.
Find the location in your exact model’s service manual
- Identify the complete laptop model. Include its model number or generation; a product family name alone may not identify the right internal layout.
- Open the manufacturer’s service or maintenance manual. Use the support information for that model.
- Search the manual for “WLAN card,” “wireless card” or “WLAN module.” Check the removal or replacement section and its labeled internal diagram.
- Read the access steps before opening the case. The procedure specifies what must be removed or disconnected to reach the module.
If you are already inside the laptop and have confirmed the model-specific procedure, a removable card may look like a small module secured by a screw or bracket, with antenna leads attached. Treat that only as a clue, not a universal identification test. Layouts differ, and a WLAN module may be covered, located on the other side of the system board or not separately removable.
Why a generic location guess can mislead
Manufacturer procedures show different access requirements, even among laptops from the same maker. For example, the Inspiron 15 3511 service procedure calls for service mode and base-cover removal before reaching its WLAN card; removal involves a bracket screw and antenna leads. The Vostro 5490 procedure requires removing the base cover and battery. A Latitude 5411 installation procedure shows the WLAN slot, card insertion, antenna reconnection and bracket securing for that model.

Its procedure prepares the computer, removes the bottom cover, disconnects the battery cable, then removes antenna covering, antenna leads and the module screw. MSI’s service guidance likewise provides location diagrams and removal steps for particular layouts, including antenna disconnection and screw removal.

These examples establish procedures for the named models, not a universal rule. They do not show that every laptop uses an M.2 card, has two antennas or provides a replaceable card.
Before you open the laptop
- Follow the exact manual’s safety and disassembly instructions. Required steps vary by model; some procedures require battery removal or battery-cable disconnection before WLAN work.
- Do not assume a card is replaceable because another laptop has one. If the manual does not identify a separate module, access requires extensive disassembly, or the manufacturer treats the part as non-user-serviceable, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
- Lenovo’s procedure cautions: “Do not open your computer or attempt any repairs before reading the Important Product Information Guide.” See its Important Product Information Guide.
If you plan to replace the WLAN card
Confirm the full laptop model and the manufacturer-approved WLAN part before ordering. HP warns that a replacement must be authorized for use in that computer by the regulator in the user’s country or region; its guide lists model-specific part descriptions. For example, it describes an Intel 9560 as 802.11b/g/n/a/ac (2 × 2) with Bluetooth 5, and an Intel AX211 as Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.2. Those descriptions are not evidence that either part fits every laptop.

Check tools and connectors in the manual
Screw requirements vary. HP’s cited procedure specifies a Phillips M2.0 × 2.5 screw; the Inspiron 15 3511 procedure specifies an M2x3 bracket screw. Use the manual to confirm the required screw and driver tip rather than assuming one size fits all. The procedures also show delicate antenna connectors: handle the connector as directed and do not pull on the wires.

Choose between DIY and repair service
Use these checks to decide whether to proceed:
- Compatibility: Is there a manufacturer-listed WLAN part for the exact model and generation?
- Serviceability: Does the manual describe a separately removable module, and what components must come off to reach it?
- Authorization: Is the replacement approved for the device and relevant region?
- Repair effort: Does access involve extensive disassembly or delicate antenna connectors?
- Tool fit: Do you have the driver and tools specified by the service procedure?
If any answer is unclear, stop before ordering or opening the computer and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
