If you used Snipping Tool, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft identifies this Screenshots folder as the automatic destination for captured snips. If the image is not there, check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and folder, then recover the capture from the app notification or clipboard.

The exact result depends on whether you are using the current Windows 11 interface or the older Windows 10 flow. A capture can exist in Snipping Tool and on the clipboard without yet being present as a file in the usual folder.

Find the default Snipping Tool folder

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar or press Windows key + E.
  2. In the navigation pane, select Pictures.
  3. Open Screenshots.

This Pictures > Screenshots route is Microsoft’s documented way to locate screenshots. It is safer than assuming one universal literal path, because your Pictures folder can be redirected, synchronized, or customized. Microsoft’s guidance is available in its Print Screen support article.

Look for the newest file by sorting the folder by Date modified. Snipping Tool normally uses an image format such as PNG, but the extension and filename can vary if you saved a copy yourself or changed the destination.

If the Screenshots folder is empty

Check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Select See More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Review the option controlling automatic saving and the default Screenshots folder.

Windows 11 lets you adjust both automatic-save behavior and the destination. If the folder was changed, use the location shown in Settings rather than continuing to search the default Pictures location. Microsoft documents this control in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

Reopen a capture from its notification

If you have just taken the snip, select the capture notification that appears near the taskbar. It opens the image in Snipping Tool, where you can inspect it and save it deliberately. A notification may disappear after a short time, so use the app itself if it is no longer visible.

Check the clipboard

Snipping Tool copies a snip to the clipboard as well as displaying it in the app. Open an image editor, Word, Paint, or another destination and press Ctrl+V. If the image appears, save it as a new file in a folder you can identify. Microsoft describes this copy-and-paste behavior in Copy the window or screen contents.

Use Save as Image for a known location

With the capture open in Snipping Tool, choose Save as Image. Select a folder, enter a filename, and confirm the save. This creates a deliberate copy even when automatic saving was disabled or pointed somewhere unexpected.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 differences

Windows 11

Current Windows 11 instructions use See More > Settings inside Snipping Tool. The app can automatically save captures and expose the Screenshots destination in Settings. The notification opens the snip for editing or saving.

Windows 10

Microsoft’s Windows 10 instructions retain older labels and a more manual flow, including Save Snip or Save As. Do not assume that a Windows 11 menu name appears unchanged on Windows 10. If you cannot find an automatic-save switch, open the snip and use the save command to choose a location manually.

Both versions can use keyboard capture routes such as Windows key + Shift + S and Print Screen. Those shortcuts affect whether you are initially handling a clipboard image, an app window, or an automatically saved file. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool article covers the version-specific behavior and controls.

What happens when you use common screenshot shortcuts?

Capture method What to check first Why the result differs
Snipping Tool capture Pictures > Screenshots, then Snipping Tool notification Automatic save may be enabled, disabled, or redirected; the capture is also copied into the app and clipboard.
Windows + Shift + S Snipping Tool notification and clipboard The shortcut opens the snipping overlay; save behavior follows Snipping Tool settings and your next action.
Print Screen Clipboard, then paste into an app Depending on your Windows settings and keyboard, the key may copy screen content rather than create a file in the Screenshots folder.

If you are unsure which method you used, check the folder, then paste from the clipboard, and finally open Snipping Tool to look for the recent capture.

Search Windows when the destination is unknown

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Use the search box for a distinctive filename, or search for recently modified image files.
  3. Sort results by Date modified and inspect files created around the time of the capture.
  4. Check common redirected locations such as a work or school-managed Pictures folder, if your organization controls folder locations.

Searching is a recovery step, not proof that every Snipping Tool file uses one fixed path. The authoritative location for your setup is the folder shown in Snipping Tool Settings.

Troubleshooting: symptom, cause and fix

“There is no Screenshots folder”

The folder may not have been created yet, or your Pictures location may be redirected. Take a test snip, check automatic-save settings, and use Save as Image to create the folder or choose another destination.

“The snip appears in Snipping Tool but not in File Explorer”

Seeing the image in the app does not establish that a file was saved. Check automatic saving, then use Save as Image. You can also paste the clipboard copy into Paint and save it.

“I closed the notification”

Open Snipping Tool from Start and look for the capture in the app. If it is unavailable, use the clipboard if you have not overwritten it; otherwise repeat the capture and save it immediately.

“The file is in a different folder”

Open See More > Settings and read the configured Screenshots folder. A changed setting, OneDrive or organizational folder redirection can make the documented default route different for your account.

“The shortcut captured the wrong display or window”

Repeat the capture with Windows + Shift + S, choose the required rectangular, window, or full-screen mode, and then save the resulting snip. If you used Print Screen, paste the clipboard contents into an app and verify what was copied before saving.

“I need a file another program can open”

Use Save as Image and select a standard image filename and destination. Saving explicitly avoids relying on an unsaved clipboard copy.

How to avoid losing the next screenshot

  • After an important capture, select its notification immediately and confirm the image in Snipping Tool.
  • Use Save as Image when the file must go to a known project folder.
  • Periodically verify the automatic-save destination in Snipping Tool Settings.
  • For a clipboard-only shortcut, paste into an application and save before copying anything else.
  • Use clear filenames and sort the destination by Date modified when handling many captures.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you actually need is a repeatable screenshot of a web page rather than a one-off Windows snip, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Use the documented options and examples at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does finding a snip in Snipping Tool prove it was saved to disk?

No. The capture can be visible in the app and copied to the clipboard while automatic saving is disabled or configured for another folder. Use Save as Image to create a confirmed file.

Can I restore a screenshot after clearing the clipboard and closing Snipping Tool?

Only if a saved copy exists somewhere. Check the configured Screenshots folder and search recently modified image files; otherwise you may need to capture the content again.

Why does my Windows 10 menu not say “See More”?

Windows 10 retains older Snipping Tool labels and save commands. Follow the Save Snip or Save As path in that version instead of the current Windows 11 wording.
