The best-documented official option is Promise Technology’s archival FastTrak66 package: Driver Version 1.20 Build 14 and Flash BIOS Version 1.20 Build 11. Promise’s upgrade document also explains the period-specific update sequence and warns that mistakes can make the operating system unusable or cause data loss. The older ft66b108.bin image mentioned in forum posts is not verified by those reports as an authentic, safe download.

Which FastTrak66 BIOS is available in the documented record?

Promise Technology’s archival upgrade document names a package containing FastTrak66 Driver Version 1.20 Build 14 and Flash BIOS Version 1.20 Build 11. It is the clearest official version reference in the available documentation: Promise Technology.

The version numbers refer to different components: the driver and controller BIOS. Do not treat them as interchangeable or assume that a driver revision alone identifies the firmware image. A period test setup also records FastTrak66 driver revision 1.14, but that is a historical test detail, not evidence that it is the right driver for every system or BIOS: Tom’s Hardware.

What about BIOS 1.08 or ft66b108.bin?

Forum users in 2001 and 2011 asked for an older image called ft66b108.bin, described as version 1.08, in connection with converting an Ultra66 to a FastTrak66. One later discussion reported dead download links. These posts document the filename and historical demand; they do not establish that a copy found elsewhere is genuine, unmodified, compatible with a particular board, or safe to flash. See the period discussions: VOGONS and Badcaps.

SATA PCI Express Controller Card, PCIe to 3Gb/s SATA ESATA IDE Controller Expansion Card Adapter, Support for RAID
  • Comply with PCI Express 1.0 a standard, support for Ultra ATA 133 hard drive, and downward support for Ultra ATA 100/66/33 standard.
  • The adapter card supports hard drives with a capacity of 137 GB or more (48-bit LBA mode).
  • Support 1 external ESATA interface and 1 internal SATA interface, the transfer rate can be up to 3Gb/s.
  • Support for RAID 0/RAID 1/RAID 0+1 mode, support JBOD, with various storage methods.
  • The is simple, insert the adapter into the corresponding PCI Expres slot, read the drive disk and insert the hard disk to use.

If you need that specific file, distinguish an authenticated Promise archive from an unverified mirror. If authenticity and board compatibility cannot be established, do not write the image to the card.

Does the FastTrak66 BIOS work on an Ultra66?

Ultra66-to-FastTrak66 conversion was discussed by users, but the discussions are not a current Promise-supported conversion procedure. They do not establish a safe, universally applicable method or prove that a particular card revision can be converted. Promise’s documented upgrade process is for the FastTrak66; it should not be read as authorization to flash an Ultra66 with FastTrak66 firmware.

PCI-E to eSATA SATA IDE Expansion Card Raid Controller Adapter Card Connector
  • Multi-function integration: The PCI-E card integrates an external eSATA II interface, an internal SATA II interface and an ATA 133 interface to realize the connection and data transmission of a variety of storage devices, providing users with great convenience.
  • High-speed transfer: The card supports Ultra ATA 133 hard drives with transfer rates up to 133MB/ s, while the SATA II interface also supports transfer rates up to 3Gb/s, ensuring efficient data transfer and greatly improving work efficiency.
  • Plug and play: The card supports plug and play function, without complex setup and installation process, just insert the card into the PCI-E slot of the motherboard, and connect the corresponding storage device to start using, which greatly saves the user's time and effort.
  • Stable and reliable: The high-performance JMB363 chip ensures the stability and reliability of data transmission, and supports the hot swap function, so that users can replace or add storage devices without affecting the system running.
  • Package Included: 1 x Controller Card, 1 x CD Driver.

The FastTrak66 is a Promise PCI IDE/ATA RAID controller, documented with its BIOS and FastBuild array-configuration utility in the product manual: Promise Technology product documentation. For a physical replacement or restoration card, search for “Promise FastTrak66 PCI IDE RAID controller.” Treat available hardware as used or collectible, and check the exact board revision and BIOS compatibility before buying or flashing.

How Promise’s period update procedure works

Promise’s instructions cover Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 98/98SE-era systems. They are not a modern Windows flashing guide. In the documented sequence, update the driver first, prepare boot media, boot from it, save the existing BIOS, then flash the new image with ptiflash. The examples use bios.old for the backup and bios.bin for the image to write.

  1. Confirm the target. Verify that the card is a FastTrak66 and check its board revision against the firmware package information. Do not assume Ultra66 conversion is covered.
  2. Update the driver first. Promise’s document makes driver update a prerequisite in its sequence. Use the driver appropriate to the operating-system version covered by that document.
  3. Prepare boot media and the flash files. Follow Promise’s archival instructions for creating the boot disk and placing the flash utility and firmware image on accessible media.
  4. Boot from the prepared media and back up the current BIOS. Use ptiflash as directed to save the existing BIOS; the document’s example backup filename is bios.old. Preserve that backup before proceeding.
  5. Write the new image only after confirming it is the intended file. The example image filename is bios.bin. Follow the package’s exact command syntax rather than guessing command options from the filename.
  6. Do not interrupt the flash. Promise repeatedly warns not to power off during the update. Let the operation complete and follow the document’s post-flash directions.

Promise explicitly warns: “Failure to follow the instructions listed here can result in an unusable Operating System or Lost Data.” A RAID controller firmware change is not a substitute for a backup: protect important data before changing the controller or firmware, and do not begin if you cannot recover the system or array.

How to choose between an official package and an old image

Choice What is established Best fit Main limitation
Promise package: BIOS 1.20 Build 11 and driver 1.20 Build 14 Named in Promise’s archival upgrade document. A FastTrak66 owner seeking the documented official package and procedure. Instructions target Windows 2000, NT 4.0, and 98/98SE-era systems; verify the card and package match.
ft66b108.bin / BIOS 1.08 Named in historical forum requests, including a conversion context. Only a restoration case where the exact older image is specifically required and its provenance and compatibility can be verified. Forum mentions do not authenticate a surviving download or make it a supported conversion method.

Before choosing, compare the controller model and board revision, BIOS build and matching driver, operating-system era, intended use (native FastTrak66 or conversion), and the image’s provenance. If one of those checks is unresolved, pause rather than treating an available binary as suitable.
