If you already own a smart TV, the simplest way to use it as a screen without its smart features is to keep it offline and connect a device you control over HDMI. If you’re buying something new, a large computer monitor, commercial display, or projector may fit better—but each comes with trade-offs in room suitability, sound, setup, and cost.

Can you use a smart TV without connecting it to the internet?

Yes. A TV can display video from an HDMI-connected source without using its built-in apps. Skip network setup or disconnect the TV from Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then select the HDMI input for a streaming device, computer, game console, or other source you control. The TV’s connected apps and other online features won’t be available while it is offline.

Keeping the set offline is a way to avoid relying on its smart-TV platform, not proof that HDMI itself prevents data collection. Proton’s summary of a 2024 ACM Internet Measurement Conference study says automatic content recognition (ACR) activity continued on tested TVs used as external displays. The summary also says that, in the study’s tested conditions, opting out stopped traffic to ACR servers. Those results do not establish how every model behaves; see Proton’s account of using a TV as a display.

What are the alternatives to a smart TV?

There is no single best replacement without knowing the room, viewing distance, sound requirements, and source devices. Compare the categories by how they fit your setup rather than assuming that a product marketed as a display has no network-related behavior.

Option Screen and room fit Sound and inputs Setup and privacy considerations
Existing smart TV kept offline Uses the screen you already own; viewing distance and resolution depend on that TV. Connect your source by HDMI; TV speakers may serve as the audio output. Usually the least new hardware to buy. Skip network setup or disconnect the set; its online apps won’t work offline.
Large computer monitor Consider if its size and resolution suit your viewing distance and room. A 43-inch, 4K display is an example cited by Proton, not a tested recommendation. Check HDMI compatibility and whether its sound meets your needs; some setups may need separate audio. Compare the display’s features and network requirements before buying. Current prices and model availability are not established here.
Commercial signage display Consider if you want a display product rather than consumer-TV features. Check input compatibility and sound carefully. The cited source says these displays may have weaker built-in sound, but that claim has not been independently verified here. Specifications and setup vary; current model availability and prices are not established here.
Projector Works only if the room, projection distance, ambient light, and screen arrangement suit it. Check the inputs and plan for audio; the cited source provides no comparative testing of sound or other specifications. Account for placement and room setup. Current model availability, prices, and comparative performance are not established here.

How should you choose a screen-only setup?

  • Start with viewing distance and screen size. A display that works at a desk may be uncomfortable across a living room. Check the resolution and viewing conditions against how you will actually sit.
  • List the HDMI sources you need. Confirm the display has compatible inputs for your computer, console, or other source, and that you can select the right input easily.
  • Decide how you’ll hear audio. A screen without suitable built-in sound may require separate speakers or another audio route. Include that in the setup and budget.
  • Check room constraints. For projection, account for throw distance, ambient light, and screen placement. For a conventional display, consider mounting or stand placement and viewing angles.
  • Count the full system cost and setup effort. Include any source device, audio equipment, mounting, cables, and accessories—not just the display.
  • Review network and privacy controls before purchase. Check whether setup requires an account or internet connection, and what controls are offered. Do not assume that a display category or HDMI input alone guarantees no data collection.

What does the privacy evidence actually show?

Privacy behavior varies by manufacturer, model, settings, and use. Two studies and one enforcement case offer useful context, but none establishes what every current television collects.

A documented VIZIO enforcement case

In a 2017 press release, the Federal Trade Commission said VIZIO software collected second-by-second viewing information on 11 million televisions. The FTC described collection across cable, broadband, set-top boxes, DVDs, over-the-air broadcasts, and streaming devices. The agencies’ case concerned VIZIO; it is not evidence that all TV makers collect the same data today. The FTC said VIZIO agreed to pay $2.2 million in connection with the charges, with details about allocation and suspension in the FTC settlement announcement.

Network filtering can help, but it is not a complete defense

A 2019 measurement study examined smart TVs in residential settings and also used controlled app testing on Roku and Amazon Fire TV. Its abstract reports frequent connections to advertising and tracking services, as well as personal information sent to platform-related and third-party endpoints. The authors found DNS blocklists generally more effective at reducing third-party exposure than exposure to platform-related endpoints. The study’s abstract does not establish the behavior of every current model.

Pi-hole or similar DNS filtering can block some requests, but it requires configuration and should be treated as mitigation rather than a guarantee. A filter may reduce some tracking traffic without blocking platform-related connections or other data collection.
