In the U.S., you can buy pool supplies from local pool-specialty stores, home-improvement stores, mass-market and club retailers, and online pool retailers or marketplaces. The right option depends on the specific item, local stock, whether you need pool-specific advice or service, and whether delivery or pickup works better. Check availability and compare the same product size and specifications before traveling or ordering.
Which type of store should you choose?
| Where to shop | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local independent pool store or specialty chain | Pool-specific questions, possible water testing or service, and products beyond basic seasonal supplies. | Services and inventory vary by location. Call ahead to confirm the store offers the service or stocks the item you need. |
| Home-improvement store | Common maintenance supplies, cleaning products, equipment categories, and potential local pickup. | Listings do not guarantee local stock, and selection may be seasonal or narrower than at a pool specialist. |
| Mass-market or club retailer | Convenient purchases when the particular product is carried locally or online. | Do not assume a specific chain has a particular chemical, size, or replacement part; check its current listing and local availability. |
| Online pool retailer or marketplace | Comparing products across pool-focused shops and broader online marketplaces. | Check seller identity, shipping eligibility and cost, delivery time, and whether equipment needs professional installation. |
| Wholesale distributor | Usually a source for retailers and pool professionals. | Do not assume it sells directly to household shoppers; confirm its customer policy before visiting. |
Leslie’s 2025 annual report describes these retail channels as competitors in a fragmented U.S. pool and spa care market. Its characterizations of competitors are the company’s own, not an independent audit. The report says local independents may be close to customers but smaller in scale, and that big-box and mass-market assortments are generally narrower or seasonal. It also describes online marketplaces as offering multiple brands without the pool-care services and expertise of specialty retailers. Leslie’s 2025 annual report.
Where can you buy pool chemicals near you?
Start with a local pool-specialty store if you want to ask pool-specific questions or are looking for a less common product. Some stores offer water testing or pool service, but those offerings are not universal; contact the location to confirm what it provides and what to bring.
For common chemicals, a home-improvement or mass-market retailer may be more convenient if it has the product in stock. Home Depot’s pool-supplies catalog lists pool chemicals alongside test kits, cleaners, equipment, and accessories. Its category page provides a way to check supplies near a store, but a category listing alone does not establish that a particular location has an item today. Before buying a treatment product, make sure you have the right item for your pool and know its specifications. A pool water test kit measures water parameters; compare which parameters and materials are included in the kit. The retailer comparison here does not evaluate a particular kit or recommend a chemical treatment or dose.
Is it better to buy pool supplies online or in a store?
In-store shopping can be useful when you need an item quickly, want to inspect a product, or would benefit from speaking with a pool specialist. Online shopping can make it easier to compare a wider range of listings, but shipping can affect the cost and timing. Some chemicals may face shipping restrictions, and large equipment can be difficult to deliver or may require professional installation.

Leslie’s describes its own business as offering supplies, service, and repair through stores and online shopping. It also says its model includes water testing and pool-care experts; those are company descriptions and should not be taken as a guarantee that every specialty store offers the same services. How to compare stores before you buy
- Identify the exact item. Note the product type, relevant specifications, brand if needed, and package size. For equipment, check compatibility with your pool setup.
- Check local stock or delivery. Use the retailer’s store-inventory tool or contact the shop. For online orders, confirm the seller, shipping eligibility, delivery estimate, and freight charges.
- Decide whether advice or service matters. Ask a specialty store directly whether it provides water testing, product guidance, repair, or installation, and whether there is a charge.
- Compare equivalent total costs. Compare like-for-like products and quantities, including shipping or freight, rather than relying on a generic claim that one type of store is always cheapest.
- Choose based on timing and convenience. Account for seasonal availability, how soon you need the supply, and whether pickup or delivery is more practical.
There is no established nationwide price winner: prices and stock vary with location, season, brand, product formulation, package size, and shipping. Verify the details for the exact item and retailer before making the trip or placing an order.

What do pool-service businesses buy, and where?
In Skimmer’s State of Pool Service 2025 survey, respondents reported purchasing parts and supplies in person at a local distributor (79%), by delivery from a local distributor (53%), from online pool retailers (30%), and from online non-pool retailers such as Amazon and big-box retailers (41%). Respondents could select multiple channels, so these figures are not exclusive market shares. The survey covers pool-service businesses, not a representative sample of household pool owners, and should not be used to predict where homeowners shop. Skimmer’s State of Pool Service 2025.
