You can buy furniture at local showrooms, through online retailers, at outlet warehouses, and—if you are open to used pieces—from secondhand shops or garage sales. The right place depends on the item, your location, budget, delivery needs, and how much you want to inspect before buying. Compare the exact item’s total delivered cost, availability, return terms, and warranty rather than choosing by sticker price alone.
Choose a shopping channel that fits the purchase
Local furniture stores and showrooms
Use a retailer’s official store locator to find nearby showrooms and confirm that the location carries the type of furniture you want. Seeing a piece in person can help you judge its scale, finish, and feel, and gives you a chance to ask about delivery, setup, and warranty support. A showroom may not stock every item shown online. Ashley’s store locator, for example, helps shoppers find stores and outlets as well as explore online ordering and home delivery.
Online retailers
Online stores make it convenient to browse broad catalogs and compare styles, but you may have to rely on photos, specifications, swatches, and reviews instead of inspecting the item. A 2026 USA TODAY guide describes online options that can include visualization tools such as swatches or room tours, and delivery ranging from doorstep service to white-glove delivery. These features are not guaranteed for every seller or product; verify the actual service, timing, assembly, room placement, and fees at checkout. Outlets may sell open-box, overstock, or discontinued merchandise. Ask about the condition of the exact piece, whether all hardware and parts are included, and what warranty, delivery, and return terms apply. Wayfair Outlet says its pricing reflects product quality and condition, and that purchases made in its stores cannot be returned; that policy is specific to Wayfair Outlet store purchases, not a rule for all outlets. Check its outlet FAQ and get the terms for your item before paying.

Secondhand shops and garage sales
Used-furniture sellers, thrift shops, and garage sales can be another route to one-off pieces or lower-cost finds. Inspect condition closely and plan how you will transport the item safely. Availability and terms depend on the individual seller.
Compare sellers on the terms that affect the real cost
Use the same checklist for every store or listing you are considering. Retailer policies change, so confirm current details directly with the seller rather than relying on an older comparison.

- Item fit: Check dimensions, materials, construction, finish, and whether you can see or try the piece in person.
- Total delivered cost: Add the item price to delivery, assembly, in-home placement, and any applicable access or stair fees. Get the seller’s current quote.
- Availability and timing: Confirm whether the item is in stock, how long a made-to-order piece takes, how delivery is scheduled, and whether local pickup is available.
- Returns and damage resolution: Check the return window and condition requirements, who pays return freight, whether the seller collects large items, and how to report damage or missing parts.
- Warranty and support: Ask who provides the warranty, what it covers, and how to make a claim. Keep the written terms.
- Outlet condition and savings: Identify the exact condition and any missing components, then weigh the discount against return restrictions and repair or replacement risk.
Consumer Reports’ furniture-store comparison illustrates that delivery, returns, and warranty terms vary among sellers. Its delivery and returns guidance also explains why large-item returns can involve special pickup logistics. Those articles are older, so use them to identify questions to ask—not as a statement of current retailer policy.

Measure both the space where the furniture will sit and the entire route it must travel to get there. Include doorways, halls, stairways, tight turns, and elevators. A piece that fits the room may still be impossible to move into it. A tape measure is enough to check dimensions; Beliani’s online furniture buying guide also recommends checking the delivery route.

A practical way to shop
- Set your requirements: Write down the room dimensions, approximate furniture dimensions, budget, and any must-have delivery or setup needs.
- Check the full route: Measure entrances and narrow passages as well as the final placement area.
- Find nearby options: Search official store locators for showrooms and outlets, then compare those options with online listings.
- Compare exact items: Check model details, stock, total delivered cost, delivery scope and timing, return costs, and written warranty terms.
- Document outlet purchases: Before paying, record the item’s condition, included parts, and return eligibility.
- Keep purchase records: Save the listing and order confirmation, and note the item’s condition at delivery in case something is damaged or missing.
What a delivery-risk figure can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports reported that among more than 38,000 furniture purchases rated in its survey, 6% of in-store purchases and 10% of online purchases arrived damaged or with missing parts. The figure is from a 2020 article, not a current rate or a prediction for an individual order; it is useful only as historical context for checking delivery and damage-resolution terms.
