For a typical .com registration, Cloudflare has the lowest five-year total in the price comparison checked October 8, 2026: $52.30. Porkbun is close at $55.40 and lets you choose your nameservers, while Cloudflare requires its nameservers. These are dated comparison figures, not guaranteed checkout quotes; check the price, renewal terms, privacy eligibility, and DNS requirements for your exact domain before buying.

Which registrar is cheapest for a .com?

The fairest comparison is what you will pay over the period you expect to keep the domain—not just the introductory registration price. The following five-year totals come from Porkbun’s comparison, which says competitor prices were checked October 8, 2026 and normalizes generic-domain prices for the $0.20 annual ICANN fee. Porkbun says its own prices are live; all figures can change.

Registrar Year 1 Years 2–5, each Five-year total Privacy and nameservers
Cloudflare $10.46 $10.46 $52.30 Free WHOIS redaction; state and country remain visible. Cloudflare nameservers required.
Porkbun $11.08 $11.08 $55.40 Free privacy on eligible domains; choose your nameservers.
Namecheap $11.18 $18.68 $85.90 Free WHOIS privacy; choose your nameservers.
GoDaddy $13.19 $23.19 $105.95 Free privacy on eligible domains; choose your nameservers. The comparison describes paid protection tiers.

These amounts are the comparison publisher’s .com snapshot, not a live quote or a market-wide average. The comparison is published by a registrar and sources competitor prices from tldes.com, so verify the final total in each registrar’s checkout. See Porkbun’s five-year .com comparison.

How to choose between the low-cost options

Choose Cloudflare if its DNS requirement suits you

Cloudflare is the lowest-cost option in this snapshot over five years. Its registrar page says registration, transfer, and renewal prices are at or below what the company pays registries and ICANN; that is Cloudflare’s description of its pricing policy. The comparison also says Cloudflare requires Cloudflare nameservers, which can make it a poor fit if you need to use another DNS provider. Review Cloudflare Registrar.

Choose Porkbun for a similarly low total with nameserver flexibility

Porkbun’s five-year figure is $3.10 above Cloudflare’s in the cited comparison. It allows customer-selected nameservers and includes privacy for eligible domains, making it a practical alternative when Cloudflare DNS is not what you want. Confirm that privacy is available for the extension you are registering.

Consider Namecheap or GoDaddy based on features, not a low first-year price

In this comparison, both cost more over five years than Cloudflare or Porkbun. Namecheap’s own pricing table, accessed October 8, 2026, listed .com promotional registration at $10.98, regular registration at $14.98, and renewal at $18.48. It listed a transfer sale price of $11.48 and a regular transfer price of $14.98. The page says WHOIS privacy is free for .com and notes that a $0.20 annual ICANN fee is added to some domain prices at checkout. Promotions and sale prices may change. Check Namecheap’s current domain prices.

The snapshot’s five-year Namecheap and GoDaddy totals account for the comparison’s fee normalization, so they do not exactly match Namecheap’s own displayed renewal figure. Compare the live checkout totals on the same basis before deciding.

What to check before registering

  1. Search the exact name and extension. Availability and pricing vary by top-level domain (TLD); the table above compares .com, not every extension.
  2. Check the regular renewal price. Record the first-year price and each renewal price, then calculate the total for the number of years you expect to keep the name. The five-year comparison uses year one plus four renewals.
  3. Make fees comparable. Check whether the displayed price includes the ICANN fee. For FY2026, ICANN’s transaction-based registrar fee is $0.20 per annual increment of a qualifying add, renewal, or transfer transaction that survives the related grace period. Registrars may show or add this fee differently. Read ICANN’s FY2026 registrar-fee announcement.
  4. Confirm privacy eligibility. “Free privacy” does not necessarily apply to every extension. Check what information will be redacted and whether the service is included for the specific domain.
  5. Check nameserver and DNS requirements. Make sure the registrar lets you point the domain where you intend to host DNS. Cloudflare’s nameserver requirement is a significant difference from the other options in the comparison.
  6. Read transfer and expiration terms. Check renewal, expired-domain recovery, and transfer rules before checkout; fees and options vary by registrar.

Plan for renewals and expiration

Domain registrations typically run for one to ten years. Registrars set their own renewal terms and fees, and promotional first-year prices may be lower than renewal charges. ICANN advises registrants to review the registrar’s terms before registering. Read ICANN’s renewal and expiration guidance.

ICANN says registrars must send renewal reminders roughly one month and one week before expiration. Keep your account contact details current, note the expiration date, and check that auto-renew is enabled and your payment method works if you rely on it. If a domain expires, it may eventually be released to someone else; recovery options and any additional fee depend on the registrar’s terms.

Why the cheapest registrar can change

The comparison is specific to .com and to prices checked on October 8, 2026. Other TLDs, promotions, eligibility rules, domain availability, and future wholesale price changes can change the result. A low first-year offer may also be outweighed by renewals. Use the comparison to narrow your choices, then compare current totals and the terms that matter to your setup at checkout.
