For used furniture that is not made by IKEA, start with nearby listings on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace if you can collect it. eBay, local charity furniture shops and reuse organisations are other options; Freegle and Freecycle help people give away or find furniture for free. IKEA’s Second-hand marketplace is for IKEA products, while its separate Buyback scheme accepts eligible IKEA furniture for store credit.
Which used-furniture marketplaces can you use in the UK?
There is no single best site for every town or item. Check what is available near you, how clearly listings describe condition and dimensions, whether collection or delivery is offered, and the full cost of getting the furniture home.
Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace
These local listing services can be practical for bulky items such as sofas and wardrobes when buyer and seller can arrange collection nearby. Gumtree describes local classifieds as useful for bulky household goods, while Facebook Marketplace is oriented toward neighbourhood discovery. eBay
eBay may suit buyers who want detailed listings and seller feedback. Check the individual listing for collection or delivery arrangements, and calculate transport costs before purchasing. British Heart Foundation also sells preloved furniture through its eBay shop. Its range and collection or delivery options can vary; check what is available for your area.

Charity furniture shops and reuse organisations
Local charity furniture shops and reuse organisations offer another way to browse and support reuse. The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) recommends the Reuse Network directory for finding furniture reuse organisations. Its guide also names eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and Wallapop as places to look. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee of stock in every town.
Freegle and Freecycle
If you want to pass on usable furniture without selling it, or are looking for something free, try Freegle or Freecycle. NLWA also lists Olio, Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree among routes for finding free items. Availability and timing depend on local listings.

How IKEA’s second-hand options differ
IKEA UK has two separate routes, and neither is a general marketplace for other furniture brands.

For furniture from another brand, use a general marketplace, a local charity or reuse shop, or a free-giving service instead.

How to choose where to list or shop
Compare the actual listing and transaction, rather than assuming one service is always cheapest or safest. Platform terms, fees and payment protections may depend on the transaction method and can change; check the current rules before agreeing. NLWA’s furniture reuse guidance is a useful local-authority starting point, although it is specific to North London.
- Collection nearby: Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace can be convenient when the item is bulky and local pickup is workable.
- Listing detail and seller history: eBay may be a better fit if you value structured listings and feedback, but confirm how the specific item will reach you.
- In-person browsing or reuse: Search for local charity furniture shops or reuse organisations through the Reuse Network. British Heart Foundation’s eBay shop is another furniture source.
- Free transfer: Freegle and Freecycle are options when finding or giving away furniture matters more than controlling availability or timing.
- IKEA furniture: Use IKEA’s marketplace to buy or sell eligible IKEA products; consider Buyback if you want to return eligible furniture for store credit.
Check these details before buying or collecting
- Measure the furniture and your route. Ask for full dimensions. Check doorways, stairs, lifts and vehicle space before arranging collection. Request photos that show the frame, upholstery, corners and any damage. Gumtree’s bulky-item collection guide covers practical moving considerations.
- Agree on what is included and how collection works. Confirm whether the furniture is assembled or dismantled, the collection address and timing, and the payment method. Be cautious about pressure to pay a deposit before seeing an item, and check the platform’s current payment-protection rules.
- Calculate the full cost. Add fuel, parking, van hire or courier charges, lifting help, protective blankets, repairs, and the time needed to dismantle and reassemble. A cheaper item farther away may cost more overall than a nearby one.
For sellers: estimate the proceeds and plan the listing
Before listing, work out what you will keep after any applicable platform or payment fees, packaging, postage and transport. For a sofa or wardrobe expected to be collected locally, a classified listing may be simpler. Check the service’s current category rules, fees and payment terms rather than relying on an old fee guide.

- Describe the furniture accurately and include dimensions, condition, damage and what is included.
- State whether it is assembled or dismantled, and make the collection arrangements clear.
- If you advertise on more than one service, keep the details consistent, monitor messages and remove the other adverts once it sells.
- If the item is usable but not worth selling, ask local charities and reuse organisations whether they accept it. Some charities may collect good-quality reusable items for free, according to NLWA, but this is not a UK-wide guarantee: acceptance depends on location, condition and capacity. Safety when buying second-hand
GOV.UK says used goods sold commercially must be safe, but warns that worn components, missing modern safety features or modifications may create risks that are not obvious. Check relevant product recalls and, where possible, inspect an item in person.
