There is no marketplace that can guarantee an NFT or transaction is safe. Before you buy or sell, verify you are using the real marketplace, check the NFT and its transaction history, understand the full transaction and platform terms, and never pay an unexpected fee to release a sale. Use this checklist to compare platforms and reduce phishing, counterfeit-listing, and wallet-approval risks.
How to compare NFT marketplaces
Rather than relying on a universal “safest marketplace” ranking, compare the policies and checks you can verify on each service. A marketplace badge, warning label, or support policy applies to that service; it does not guarantee authenticity or protection everywhere.
| What to check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Official site and support | Can you confirm the domain through the marketplace’s own guidance? Is there a clearly identified Help Center or reporting route? |
| Wallet and chain compatibility | Does the marketplace support your wallet and the blockchain where the NFT exists? Does the transaction prompt name the expected network and action? |
| Total costs | What platform charges, creator earnings or royalties, network gas, and payment-provider fees apply? Review the amount shown before signing. |
| Warnings and reporting | How does the service label suspicious items, accept reports, and explain restrictions or remedies? |
| Terms and recourse | What responsibility does the platform place on you for verifying an NFT, and which costs or transactions may not be refundable? |
For example, OpenSea describes itself as a peer-to-peer platform, says users are responsible for checking an NFT’s legitimacy and applicable terms, and warns that blockchain fees are the user’s responsibility and are final and non-refundable. Those are OpenSea’s disclosures, not a description of every marketplace. Its terms state, “NFTs and cryptocurrencies are high risk.” Read OpenSea’s Terms of Service before relying on its specific policies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore you choose or visit a marketplace
- Navigate to the official domain yourself. Use a bookmark or verify the address against the marketplace’s official instructions. Avoid search ads, unsolicited messages, and email links; check carefully for misspellings and lookalike domains. Magic Eden’s guide lists official domains by geography, but domain routing can change, so check its current guidance rather than relying on an old address.
- Find the real support and reporting channel. Save it before you need help. OpenSea recommends using its Help Center and warns against seeking support through unofficial social accounts or messages.
- Check marketplace-specific details. Confirm supported wallets and chains, all charges, how creator earnings are handled, and what the service says it will do about suspicious listings or disputes. Do not assume another platform has the same policies or remedies.
See OpenSea’s safety guidance and Magic Eden’s phishing guide for their respective official-site and account-safety instructions.

Before buying an NFT
Confirm the collection, creator, and item
Do not treat a familiar collection name, copied artwork, or polished listing as proof. Compare the collection and creator with sources independent of the listing, and check the contract address and token details against the creator’s verified information or a reliable blockchain explorer. Review the seller and the item’s history as well. OpenSea advises buyers to research the seller, collection, NFT, and history; its terms also place responsibility for checking legitimacy, authenticity, and legality on the user.
Review warnings and transaction history
Read the listing’s transaction history and any suspicious-activity labels shown by the marketplace. A warning can restrict trading on that particular service without freezing the NFT across the blockchain. OpenSea says items it flags may still be transferred using other platforms. Its policy says an item reported as stolen can be disabled on OpenSea for up to 90 days, subject to earlier withdrawal of the report or longer periods in some circumstances; this is an OpenSea policy, not a general NFT rule. Check OpenSea’s explanation of suspicious activity for its policy details.

Inspect every wallet prompt before signing
A site connection and a token approval are different. A connection gives a site access to certain wallet information; an approval can authorize a decentralized application to move specified tokens. Read the wallet’s transaction details and do not sign if you cannot tell what it authorizes. MetaMask explains that revoking an approval is itself an on-chain transaction and may require gas. Revocation is also different from disconnecting a site. Use the approval tools for the relevant network and review permissions you no longer need. MetaMask’s token-approval guide describes approvals and revocation.
Stop when a deal is designed to rush you
Pause if a stranger sends a wallet link, pressures you with a limited-time offer, promises an unexpected giveaway, or offers a price that seems unusually attractive. Fake sites may use urgency to prompt a wallet connection or signature before you inspect the request. Open the marketplace directly in a new tab instead of following the message’s link.

Before and after selling
Do not pay to “release” a sale
A normal listing should not require you to send a stranger cryptocurrency to unlock, digitize, validate, or verify the NFT or to fix a supposed buyer error. Do not pay an alleged ETH deposit, intermediary, or extra fee, scan a QR code, or sign a transaction to receive proceeds. OpenSea says a buyer can purchase an item after it is listed without the seller paying an extra fee to facilitate the sale. If a transaction appears to have failed, check it through the official marketplace and wallet, then contact official support.
Check suspicious messages without opening their payloads
Do not download an attachment from someone claiming to be marketplace support, and avoid unsolicited files and QR codes. Check the full sender address and domain, then go to the official help channel yourself. OpenSea says authentic messages come from its opensea.io domain and will not ask for a seed phrase or password. Its guidance also describes fake emails and social messages that claim a sale needs an intermediary or extra payment.

Protect wallet access and review permissions
- Never share your recovery phrase or private keys. A legitimate support representative does not need them.
- Install wallet apps from the wallet provider’s official source. Avoid unknown links, files, and QR codes.
- Use unique passwords and enable account two-factor authentication where available. A hardware security key such as a YubiKey can help protect account sign-ins, but it does not make a malicious transaction safe to sign.
- Consider a crypto hardware wallet for additional key protection; it still requires you to verify what each transaction authorizes.
- Periodically review and revoke approvals you no longer need, accounting for any network gas cost.
OpenSea’s safety guide covers recovery phrases, wallet downloads, password reuse, two-factor authentication, hardware wallets, and contract approvals. Its separate guides explain how to report phishing and common Web3 scams. These guides describe OpenSea’s recommendations and reporting routes; use the equivalent official guidance for any other marketplace.

A quick checklist before you sign
- Open the marketplace using a verified official domain or your saved bookmark.
- Confirm the creator, collection, contract address, token details, seller, and item history using independent sources where possible.
- Read marketplace warnings and the platform’s applicable terms; do not treat a missing warning as proof of authenticity.
- Check the wallet, blockchain, total charges, and exact action shown in the transaction prompt.
- Reject requests for recovery phrases, private keys, surprise deposits, “buyer error” payments, or signatures you do not understand.
- If anything looks suspicious, stop. Use the marketplace’s official reporting or support channel rather than a contact supplied by the other party.
