You can buy a Windows 11 digital license through the Microsoft Store app or buy a boxed or digital copy from an authorized retailer. If you are buying a computer anyway, compare the total cost of a PC that includes Windows; Microsoft also recognizes refurbished PCs as a purchase route, with the refurbisher responsible for supplying the key. Treat unusually cheap standalone-key listings cautiously: a key may be stolen or counterfeit, fail to activate, or be blocked later.
Where to buy Windows 11
Microsoft recommends buying Windows from Microsoft or buying a PC with Windows preinstalled from Microsoft or a store you know and trust. Its documented purchase routes differ in what you receive:

There is no like-for-like current price comparison established here. Compare the total cost, seller trust and license evidence, edition, delivery format, and recourse if activation fails rather than choosing on the advertised key price alone.
Product key or digital license: what are you buying?
Windows 11 activation can use either a 25-character product key or a digital license. With a digital license, you do not need to enter a key. A retailer may instead supply a key, while a boxed copy typically includes one on a label or card. Microsoft describes the Store app purchase as creating a digital license.

Check that the license edition matches the Windows edition installed on the PC. For a refurbished computer, ask the seller to identify the included edition and explain what license evidence comes with it; Microsoft says the refurbisher, not Microsoft, must provide the key.

A dramatically cheap key from an auction, classified ad, or unfamiliar online listing is not equivalent to buying a license from Microsoft or a trusted authorized retailer. Microsoft cautions that such keys may be stolen or counterfeit, already in use, unable to activate, or blocked after a theft report. A low upfront cost can therefore leave you without working activation or meaningful recourse.

Activation itself is not a genuineness check. Microsoft says activation pairs the product key or digital entitlement with the device’s hardware configuration; activation does not evaluate whether the copy is genuine. A key working at first is not evidence that the seller provided a valid license.

Before you pay
- Identify whether you need Windows 11 Home or another edition, and confirm the purchase matches the edition you will install.
- Prefer Microsoft or a retailer you know and trust; for a third-party seller, establish authorization, support, and return terms before purchase.
- Determine whether you are receiving a digital license, a product key, or a boxed copy, and where the key or license evidence will be delivered.
- If buying a PC, compare the full computer price with the cost of a separate license and verify that Windows is included.
- For a refurbished PC, get the refurbisher to identify the edition and provide the key or other stated license evidence.
- Be wary of listings that sell only an exceptionally cheap key without clear seller identity, license details, or recourse if it fails.
