On many Samsung TVs, the best place to start looking for the remote sensor is along the bottom edge, near the control button or control stick. Its exact position depends on the model, so check your TV’s manual or model-specific diagram before assuming a location.
Where to look for the IR receiver
Inspect the lower bezel and underside of the TV, particularly around the control button or stick. A small dark window or indicator may help identify the area, but designs vary. Samsung’s Q9FN mechanical drawing labels the bottom-center area “Control Stick / Remote control sensor,” while the Q80CD manual refers to a remote sensor at the bottom. These examples make the lower edge a useful first check, not a universal placement specification.
For a more precise answer, find the TV’s model number and consult its manual or mechanical drawing. A Samsung Community accepted answer for the 65-inch Q80R, for example, reports that the IR sensor for an older standard remote is in the center control panel on the underside. That is a model-specific community report, rather than a specification for every Samsung TV.

Remote communication method can affect troubleshooting. Samsung’s Q80CD manual instructs owners to pair a Samsung Smart Remote; the Q80R community answer distinguishes a Bluetooth Smart Remote from an older standard IR remote. Identify both the TV and remote model, and follow the instructions for that combination. Do not assume that every Smart Remote works only by IR or that Bluetooth means every remote function avoids IR.

Test the sensor and remote
- Inspect the lower edge. Look around the control stick or button for a sensor window, and clear anything that directly blocks the likely area.
- Try the remote aimed at the TV. The Q80CD manual suggests testing from 1.5–1.8 m away and checking whether the bottom sensor blinks when a button is pressed. These are instructions for that model’s manual, not a universal distance or diagnostic behavior.
- Pair a Smart Remote if required. For the Q80CD instructions, hold Back and Play/Pause together for three seconds. Confirm the procedure in your own TV or remote manual before using that sequence on another model.
- For a classic IR remote, recheck line of sight and the model-specific sensor location. If the TV still does not respond, verify that the remote is compatible with the TV before treating the sensor as faulty.
What if the TV uses One Connect?
Do not assume the IR receiver is in the One Connect box. A Samsung Community discussion about 2019 QLED One Connect sets contains conflicting user statements about the TV receiver and the box’s repeater role, and does not establish one location for all models. Check the documentation for the exact TV and One Connect box. Also distinguish receiving the remote’s signal from sending IR commands to control another device; they are different functions.
When an external IR cable may help
Samsung documents an external IR cable for the QB98T/QM98T business displays, whose manual places the remote sensor at the bottom and recommends connecting the separately sold cable to the IR IN port to enhance receiver performance. The manual lists an operating range of 7–10 m and a 30° angle to the left or right for those displays only. Do not apply those figures or assume the accessory works with another Samsung TV unless its documentation confirms a compatible IR IN port or external sensor.
